00:00 We all know about the crock of gold at the bottom of the rainbow,
00:03 and I, for one, don't believe it.
00:06 A much more credible means of searching for gold in these parts, it seems to me,
00:10 is to catch a leprechaun and let him tell you where it's buried.
00:13 Then you tie him to a reed, for isn't it always in bogland?
00:17 By the beard.
00:19 Or else you tie some cotton to the reed.
00:21 The trouble is that he usually escapes while you've gone to fetch your spade.
00:25 Or else by the time you get back, the bog cotton is out,
00:29 and there's cotton on every reed.
00:32 John Clifford has been seriously searching for gold in the Sperns.
00:37 One of the nice things about gold is it comes out in a pure form.
00:41 It's very easy to separate.
00:43 I like gold. It's one of the nice four-letter words.
00:47 There is gold in the Sperns.
00:49 This has been reported down through the centuries.
00:53 We have confirmed this.
00:55 We are still at the exploration stage.
00:58 However, we hope that we will be in production in the future.
01:04 The first stage of an exploration program
01:07 is generally a rapid reconnaissance activity over a large piece of ground.
01:15 However, as your programs intensify and continue,
01:20 you will tend to focus on individual areas within your exploration program.
01:26 And this is the stage that we are currently at.
01:31 We have found gold in the stream gravels.
01:35 We have found gold in bedrock.
01:39 Now we are seeking to determine the quantity of mineral which is present there.
01:46 This particular instance here,
01:49 we have, as you can see, located a vein here in a stream channel.
01:56 And then we have sought to determine the lateral, horizontal continuity of that structure
02:06 by digging a trench across it.
02:09 And then finally, we would seek to determine how deep into the earth
02:14 that goes by using a drilling machine such as this.
02:19 This here is one of the veins which we found in the course of our exploration activity.
02:31 You can see the mineral glistening in there in the sunlight.
02:36 We are now establishing the extent of these veins using a variety of methods.
02:44 As you can see, the vein is not particularly obvious,
02:49 which is one reason why they have not been found up to now.
02:53 However, with proper methods and good people, I think you can do it.
02:59 [Sound of a drilling machine]
