Jo Grady, UCU General Secretary speaks to the Inverness Courier about why the UCU felt it was important to go on strike
Transcript
00:00 Well, good morning Jo.
00:01 Can I first start off by asking, why are you striking today?
00:06 So we're on strike today because the university has put 44 people at risk of redundancy.
00:12 So what that has meant is that we have 45 people not knowing if they will have a job,
00:17 not knowing if they will get made redundant before Christmas,
00:20 and the students that they serve, that they teach, that they support, not knowing what is happening.
00:25 This institution is a shameful way to treat people, it's a shameful way to treat students.
00:31 We need change, we need negotiation, we need people to know that their jobs are secure.
00:35 So we're here on strike today about 44 redundancies,
00:38 but we'll be here until we get clarity and certainty for all of those people.
00:42 Is there anything else that you'd want our viewers to know about in regards to this?
00:48 Yeah, no union takes strike action easily.
00:51 People lose money when they take strikes.
00:54 But we've tried negotiation, and we've really tried to get the university to resolve this issue with us.
01:00 So we'd really want that everyone who's part of the community, people who are students here,
01:05 that they get in touch with the university and get them to settle this dispute,
01:09 and to give certainty and clarity to the staff who currently don't know if they're still going to have a job at Christmas.
