00:00 Britney Spears reveals why she shaved her head during a turbulent time in her life.
00:05 In an excerpt from her upcoming memoir, Obtained by People, the pop icon reportedly reflects
00:11 on what she was thinking during her infamous head shaving incident back in February of 2007.
00:17 Britney reportedly writes, "I'd been eyeballed so much growing up. I'd been looked up and down,
00:21 had people telling me what they thought of my body since I was a teenager.
00:25 Shaving my head and acting out were my ways of pushing back."
00:29 Nearly a year after her public breakdown in February of 2008, Britney was placed in a
00:35 court-ordered conservatorship, which granted her father, Jamie Spears,
00:39 control of her financial and personal decisions. According to People, the "Piece of Me" singer
00:44 claims in the memoir, "Under the conservatorship, I was made to understand that those days were now
00:49 over. I had to grow my hair out and get back into shape. I had to go to bed early and take whatever
00:54 medication they told me to take." Britney also alleges that she faced a "professional" rut
01:00 under the conservatorship, despite recording four albums and headlining a Vegas residency.
01:05 She reportedly says, "I would do little bits of creative stuff here and there, but my heart
01:10 wasn't in it anymore. As far as my passion for singing and dancing, it was almost a joke at that
01:16 point. Thirteen years went by with me feeling like a shadow of myself. I think back now on my father
01:22 and his associates having control over my body and my money for that long, and it makes me feel sick.
01:27 Think of how many male artists gambled all their money away. How many had substance abuse or mental
01:32 health issues. No one tried to take away their control over their bodies and money. I didn't
01:37 deserve what my family did to me." Back in September of 2021, Jamie was removed as Britney's
01:43 conservator. In court documents at the time, lawyers for Jamie said, "As Mr. Spears has said
01:48 again and again, all he wants is what is best for his daughter. If Ms. Spears wants to terminate the
01:54 conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr. Spears believes that she should
01:59 get that chance." The conservatorship was ultimately terminated in November of that year. E! News has
02:05 reached out to a rep for Jamie Spears regarding Britney's claims in her book, but did not
02:09 immediately hear back. Britney's new memoir, "The Woman in Me," is set for release on October 24.
