00:00 Another book.
00:00 Yes, another one.
00:01 Super exciting.
00:03 So you collaborated with your friend Graham on this one.
00:07 Again, talk to me about exploring New Zealand,
00:10 why you guys decided to do this.
00:12 New Zealand is this incredible group of islands.
00:15 It's a bit like Neverland, Peter Pan's Neverland.
00:18 It has everything from fjords to glaciers to jungles.
00:22 There's everything to do there.
00:24 Loads of adrenaline sports and crazy wildlife
00:26 from great white sharks to kiwi birds, flightless birds,
00:29 to creatures that are still around from the dinosaurs'
00:33 times.
00:33 It really is this incredible country.
00:35 So we wanted to go there.
00:37 Also, it is his home where he lives now.
00:40 But also, it has a lot of Scottish connections.
00:42 A lot of Scots went there and colonized it
00:46 a couple hundred years ago.
00:47 So sort of that six degrees of separation thing happening.
00:51 Yes, yes.
00:51 We're all Scottish.
00:53 I like it.
00:54 You guys went zip lining.
00:56 You did all kinds of wild things.
00:58 Are you an adventure junkie?
01:00 I think I am.
01:01 And to be totally frank, the real ulterior motive
01:04 for the whole thing is Graham is a complete pussycat.
01:07 He gets very scared very easily.
01:09 I like that you said pussycat.
01:10 A pussycat.
01:11 He gets scared.
01:13 And so the more that I put him in situations
01:15 that he is going to wet himself or soil his kilt,
01:19 then the better for me.
01:20 So I force him--
01:21 force him, soil his kilt. I force him to jump out of things.
01:25 And we went on bungee swings, and we go in helicopters,
01:28 and do all this stuff.
01:29 Yeah, a lot of fun.
01:31 OK, so you've already said you're
01:32 the braver one of the two.
01:34 Yes, I think that would be fair to say.
01:35 So you're pushing him to do it.
01:37 I do.
01:38 And I think it just gives me more bravado, I think.
01:40 If I am a little bit scared-- and to be honest, I was.
01:43 One of the amazing things we did, we went in a helicopter
01:45 up to a glacier 7,000 feet up in the height of summer.
01:48 Enormous glacier.
01:50 And it was incredible.
01:51 We landed the helicopter there.
01:53 But to be honest, I don't love helicopters.
01:56 But it was such an incredible experience.
01:58 So yeah, really fun.
01:59 Have we found your fear?
02:00 Is it heights?
02:01 Or is it just heights?
02:02 No, no, not heights.
02:03 No, I'm fine with heights.
02:04 But helicopters, yeah, I don't trust them.
02:06 I know you guys are very close.
02:08 So close that you have--
02:10 you shared the camper, but you've also
02:11 shared other spaces together when
02:13 you were writing other books.
02:14 So what is it like being roommates?
02:16 Who's messier?
02:18 Who does the dishes?
02:19 What's that dynamic like?
02:19 Well, I do all the work, basically.
02:21 Yeah, I do all the driving.
02:23 We traveled all around this time around New Zealand.
02:25 We also did our first season of the show
02:28 and the book in Scotland.
02:31 Yeah, I'm basically the one that does all the work.
02:33 Yes, got it.
02:34 So he doesn't pull his weight.
02:35 Never, no.
02:37 But someone's got to do it.
02:38 And no, it's been a great adventure, honestly.
02:41 New Zealand is an incredible country.
02:42 And then also one of the amazing points
02:44 is we got to meet the Maori.
02:47 We got to learn a lot about their culture.
02:49 They came from the Pacific Islands in the 1400s.
02:52 They were sort of, I guess, the indigenous people there
02:55 for hundreds of years until the Brits came and colonized.
02:58 They have great traditions from doing the haka.
03:02 They have these-- they have moku, which is essentially
03:07 their sort of--
03:08 I guess you could call it tattoo, the way
03:09 that they express themselves, paint themselves.
03:12 They have just an incredible, incredible culture.
03:14 And we were very, very lucky to be invited
03:16 to visit a local tribe, Niwi.
03:20 And that was really special.
03:21 It sounds like you really immerse yourself
03:23 kind of into the whole experience.
03:25 So for you, going to New Zealand, doing this journey,
03:28 what did you learn about yourself, if anything?
03:31 Oh, what did I learn about myself?
03:33 Yes.
03:33 I mean, I do--
03:34 I love all the adventure stuff.
03:36 And I'm big passionate into that.
03:38 And Graham, I suppose, is more into the history.
03:40 And just to combine that was really interesting.
03:42 And then to write this book, to write something,
03:45 maybe get under the skin a bit more of New Zealand.
03:48 It is an incredible place.
03:49 There's so much to explore.
03:51 But yeah, it's also--
03:53 I just realized that to go on a road trip,
03:55 you need good company as well.
03:57 Absolutely.
03:58 I might be booking a trip.
03:59 You're kind of selling New Zealand to me now.
04:01 Come to New Zealand.
04:02 Take the book as your guide.
04:04 And yeah, you're not going to be disappointed.
04:05 It was an incredible place.
04:06 That's kind of amazing.
04:07 Yeah.
04:07 You talk a lot about going hiking and kind of getting out
04:10 in the outdoors and how it's really
04:12 good for your mental health.
04:13 So what do you do for self-care?
04:16 Yeah.
04:17 Well, in fact, that is probably one of the things I do.
04:19 I created a fitness, online fitness program
04:22 called My Peak Challenge.
04:24 We support charities every year.
04:26 We've raised over $7 million for charities.
04:28 And one of the things I like to do
04:31 is share my love of hiking, getting in the outdoors,
04:33 getting into nature.
04:34 It's really good for you, good for your stress,
04:38 sort of leaving your mobile phone at home
04:40 and all of those sort of work commitments.
04:42 And just, I know, taking, breathing in some fresh air
04:44 can really help.
04:45 You know, even five, 10 minute walk a day out in nature,
04:49 if you can, is so good for your mental health.
04:51 I totally agree.
04:52 I try to do it.
04:53 I'm not so good at it.
04:54 And I'm addicted to my phone.
04:55 So any tips would be really good.
04:57 Aren't we all?
04:58 Yeah, I mean, it's really difficult, isn't it?
05:00 But I think, you know, if you just switch off,
05:02 certainly from such a busy lifestyle,
05:04 it's really great to get out in nature.
05:05 And I mean, if you can, you've got somewhere nearby
05:08 to go do a quick walk.
05:10 It's the best for your health.
05:11 Okay, let's talk about this gin.
05:13 Let's talk about the gin.
05:15 People have really talked this up to me
05:18 and I have not had any.
05:19 Okay, high expectations, yeah.
05:21 Yes, so tell me about why you wanted to do it.
05:24 It's every, I know a lot of your roots are tied to it.
05:28 So.
05:29 Sure, yeah, this is the Sassnack Wild Scottish Gin.
05:31 I'm from Scotland, obviously, and all of the botanicals,
05:35 so essentially all the ingredients are from where I'm from
05:38 in the Southwest of Scotland.
05:39 A lot of gins that are created, especially in Scotland,
05:41 they use botanicals like citrus or coriander seed,
05:45 things that are not naturally from Scotland.
05:47 Everything here is, so we've got juniper,
05:50 we've got heather, we've got toasted oats,
05:53 there are crab apples, there's rhubarb, blaborys.
05:57 It really is a very balanced gin.
05:59 I took a long time trying to create this.
06:00 I wanted to make a very balanced,
06:02 very innovation style gin.
06:03 I don't want anything too strong in juniper
06:06 or like one flavor profile.
06:07 It's really clean, really crisp, delicious,
06:10 and available wherever you buy your liquor.
06:12 We have the bar cart here.
06:14 We do. We're all set up.
06:15 Yes. I would love
06:16 for you to make me a cocktail.
06:17 I would love to make you a cocktail.
06:20 So I'm gonna make you a cocktail
06:26 that kind of in keeping with the whole New Zealand thing,
06:29 it's called the Bees Knees.
06:30 Okay.
06:31 Probably 'cause it's such a great little cocktail,
06:33 but the reason it's called a Bees Knees
06:34 is 'cause we use honey.
06:36 And New Zealand is very famously known for Manuka honey,
06:39 which has a lot of health benefits.
06:40 Oh, I eat Manuka honey in my coffee.
06:43 Right. Well, it comes from New Zealand.
06:45 Okay.
06:46 The bees, they, you know,
06:47 get the pollen from the Manuka plant
06:49 and they have all these great health properties.
06:51 So anyway, yes.
06:52 So drinking this cocktail will not only be a lot of fun,
06:55 but also it's healthy as well, right?
06:57 Love it. Healthy.
06:58 Okay. The Bees Knees,
06:59 really simple cocktail to make,
07:00 only a couple of ingredients.
07:02 So what you're gonna need,
07:03 first of all, you're gonna need a shaker.
07:05 We're gonna put in our ingredients.
07:07 You want two ounces of delicious wild Scottish gin.
07:11 We don't have a jigger here, a way to measure it.
07:13 So I'm just gonna do this by eye.
07:15 I know you like your drinks kind of spirit forward.
07:17 So we're gonna do two ounces of our wild Scottish gin.
07:22 You're gonna do, you want some nice honey,
07:25 obviously Manuka honey.
07:26 It's got all those health benefits.
07:27 We're gonna do like, let's say half an ounce
07:30 or just a good couple of like a teaspoon and a bit.
07:34 Yeah, that looks great.
07:36 Gorgeous.
07:37 I promise it's gonna be good.
07:38 I believe you.
07:38 And then lemons, fresh lemons always best.
07:41 You're gonna use three quarters of an ounce
07:43 of fresh lemon juice.
07:44 So I'm gonna say it's like roughly,
07:46 probably a whole lemon, maybe a bit less.
07:52 I'm doing this to catch the pips.
07:54 You don't wanna be drinking those.
07:56 I think I'll throw those.
07:56 This kind of seems like a good drink if you're sick
07:59 and you still wanna go out.
08:00 Right, right.
08:01 Well, do you know a hot toddy?
08:04 Hot toddy is a Scottish drink that we also make
08:07 and it's with honey, lemon.
08:08 You can put cloves in there, hot water and whiskey.
08:12 Excuse my mess.
08:13 Now we wanna put some ice in here.
08:15 Oh look, we have a little container.
08:18 You guys think of everything.
08:20 Excuse my hands.
08:21 I'm gonna put lots of ice in here.
08:22 In fact, we're gonna throw it all in there.
08:25 I'm gonna put some ice in there.
08:28 Look at you.
08:29 Listen, if all else fails, you got a bartending gig.
08:32 You haven't tasted it yet.
08:34 And then we have to shake it.
08:35 Half the thing about bartending is just looking good,
08:40 doing it and being friendly.
08:42 The drinks don't have to be good.
08:43 Yeah, give us a good shake, Sam.
08:45 There you go.
08:46 Good shake.
08:47 It's nice and cold.
08:47 My hands are freezing.
08:49 Here we go.
08:50 Cheers.
08:51 Sip or spill, kilts or trousers?
08:59 Oh, I mean, absolutely.
09:01 Do I drink while I do this?
09:02 Sure.
09:03 Yeah, kilts all the time.
09:04 Kilts.
09:04 We wore kilts, obviously, in New Zealand.
09:08 Can be a little bit drafty,
09:09 especially on a bungee or on a helicopter.
09:12 But yeah, no, kilts are great.
09:14 They're very comfortable as well.
09:15 Okay, they are comfortable.
09:17 That leads me into, do you go commando under the kilt?
09:22 Wow.
09:23 Is that a personal question?
09:24 Yeah, it's probably quite personal,
09:25 but I mean, sure.
09:27 Do I just keep drinking?
09:28 Oh, he's sipping.
09:29 Okay.
09:30 Whatever your comfort level is, yes.
09:34 You did say it was drafty,
09:35 so I think we could read between the lines with that.
09:38 If you weren't an actor, you would be?
09:40 I would, not a bartender.
09:43 I would be, what would I be?
09:45 I'm kind of into food.
09:47 Maybe a chef or maybe a sports person,
09:50 but I'm not very good at anything.
09:52 Are you good at any sports?
09:53 I feel like I'm okay at things.
09:56 I do like to work out and do various activities, yeah.
09:59 But I'm not really a team player.
10:02 I like endurance sports,
10:04 like being on my own, hiking, cycling, all that stuff.
10:06 Okay, close enough, right?
10:08 First celebrity crush?
10:10 Oh, first celebrity crush.
10:14 Wow, I think I've probably, probably Gillian Anderson.
10:18 Yeah, I worked with her as well on a movie years ago,
10:23 but she, I mean, she's just incredible.
10:26 She's gorgeous.
10:26 Amazing, gorgeous woman.
10:28 And Mulder and Scully, you know,
10:29 I was obsessed, the X-Files, all that stuff.
10:31 Yeah, did you tell her that you were,
10:33 she was your celebrity crush?
10:34 Oh God, no, no, no, no, I couldn't tell her that.
10:37 She's just remarkable.
10:38 She's got great charisma and she's very funny.
10:40 And in that great show, "Sex Education" as well, brilliant.
10:43 Okay, I love it.
10:44 She's a good one.
10:45 Cheers.
10:46 She might be mine too.
10:47 Okay, Scottish word that's most often mistaken.
10:51 Mistaken.
10:52 I guess, well, can, you know, you can, right?
10:58 So it means you know, but people say,
11:00 so you can, you can, you can in New York.
11:04 I don't get, oh, you came, is that what you're saying?
11:06 You can, no.
11:07 See, it's misunderstood.
11:09 It means, do you know?
11:11 Like, do you know?
11:13 Like, this is a strong drink, you can.
11:15 Got it, okay, okay.
11:16 No, you don't get it.
11:17 Yeah, that's not, that sounds challenging for us Americans.
11:20 I can see why people get mistaken with that.
11:22 Okay, coming straight from the book.
11:24 Yes.
11:25 Is it true you get a full body wax?
11:27 What?
11:29 Page 207.
11:31 Well, he probably wrote that bit.
11:33 Full body wax.
11:35 Not normally.
11:37 However, we did go to a place called Hell's Gate,
11:40 which is this geothermal area.
11:44 So a lot of the Maori, they use the geothermal
11:47 for many hundreds of years to cook with,
11:51 to use it as natural defenses,
11:53 but it has a lot of health properties as well.
11:55 There's a lot of ammonia in there.
11:57 So if you have a wound and you bathe in the waters
11:59 that are heated by the geothermal activity,
12:01 your wound will actually heal quicker.
12:04 It's incredible.
12:05 So yes, we went to Hell's Gate
12:07 and there is a whole muddy area with like warm mud
12:10 that's heated by this geothermal activity
12:12 and we bathed in it.
12:14 So it's like a spa.
12:15 So yeah, pretty cool.
12:16 I love that.
12:17 I love how Sam just went from full body wax
12:20 to health benefits of-
12:22 To the spa, yeah, natural spa.
12:23 Okay, what is your number one rule for dating?
12:26 I have to ask for the ladies.
12:27 The number one rule for dating.
12:31 Well, I mean, they have to love Scottish gin or whiskey.
12:35 So I guess if they enjoy a tipple would be helpful.
12:38 It kind of feels like a little date right now, actually.
12:41 It is a little date,
12:42 except there's like a lot of people watching us.
12:44 Speed dating while people watch.
12:46 This is what it would be like to be on "The Bachelor."
12:49 Is it? Right, right, right.
12:50 Yeah, because there would be cameras
12:51 and we would be like-
12:52 We're like, "Hey, we're just having a great time."
12:53 But actually you're all watching.
12:54 Exactly. Okay.
12:56 Last time you drank too much.
12:58 'Cause there's lots of drinking stories in this book.
12:59 Yeah, there are.
13:00 Yeah, so in New Zealand, obviously,
13:02 it's also famous for wine.
13:04 It has amazing vineyards.
13:06 Sauvignon Blanc is obviously like their most famous export.
13:11 But actually one of my favorites
13:12 is a Riesling from New Zealand.
13:14 Really enjoy that.
13:15 But they also have great whiskey down under as well.
13:18 I do like a Riesling from-
13:20 I agree with you. Do you?
13:21 Yes.
13:21 Yeah, there's one in particular I really enjoy.
13:24 I probably won't plug it right now,
13:26 but it's really delicious.
13:28 Rieslings, obviously, I think normally come from
13:31 traditionally Austria and Germany.
13:32 Okay.
13:33 And are very oily and like that sort of petroleum taste,
13:36 but they're a lot lighter and crisper
13:37 for the ones that come from New Zealand.
13:39 So we had a bit of a competition,
13:40 myself and Graham, in New Zealand.
13:42 Not to drink as much wine as we could.
13:44 Okay.
13:44 But we actually had a competition
13:45 and unfortunately he may have won.
13:48 He may have won.
13:49 All right. And final question.
13:50 Yeah.
13:51 A recent Men in Kilts teaser went viral as a thirst trap.
13:56 Oh.
13:57 Yes. Did you know this?
13:58 No.
13:59 Okay. Do you self identify as a thirst trap?
14:02 What was in it?
14:03 I don't even know what was in it.
14:05 It was very, listen, the people loved it.
14:09 Oh, right.
14:10 You don't know this.
14:10 No.
14:11 Are you being humble?
14:12 No, I am not being humble.
14:13 I will have to watch it myself.
14:15 No, I mean, I'm not a thirst trap,
14:17 but I'm certainly thirsty, so.
14:19 There you go.
14:20 That was a good answer.
14:20 Thank you.
14:21 Cheers.
14:22 (upbeat music)
14:25 (upbeat music)
14:27 (upbeat music)
14:30 (upbeat music)
14:33 (upbeat music)
