00:13 The Santiago 2023 Pan American Games continue in Chile.
00:17 We go live with journalist Eduardo Reconesi.
00:20 Good morning, Eduardo. What are the latest updates of today?
00:28 Good morning. How are you? We are here live at the National Stadium of Santiago.
00:33 The morning after the grand opening, the morning after the big event that was the inauguration of the Pan American Santiago 2023 Games.
00:41 Today, things really get going. Until yesterday, we only had a handful of events happening simultaneously.
00:48 But today, 19 different disciplines, 19 different events are going to be happening here in Santiago and in other cities across Chile.
00:58 It all started around 8 a.m. this morning in the city of ConcepciĂłn, south of Santiago, with the rowing heats in pairs.
01:06 That event will continue throughout the morning.
01:08 Also, another event that started this morning is mountain bike.
01:12 Mountain bike started at Santiago 2023, and attention with this, we have the first medals of the company.
01:18 It was precisely in Men's Olympic Cross Country, which occurred in the Andes Mountains, close from here, a couple of miles west from here.
01:28 And the winner was Gunnar Holmgren from Canada.
01:32 He won the gold medal in the mountain bike cross country, followed by the local, the Chilean, MartĂn Vidaure.
01:40 He won the bronze, and Brazilian athlete, José Márquez de Almeida, took the bronze.
01:46 The Chilean took the silver medal. He got second place.
01:50 Right behind me, we have skateboarding. It's wrapping up.
01:54 Skateboarding, it's one of the new disciplines.
01:56 It was introduced in Tokyo 2020, and it's the first time in Pan American Games, Santiago 2023.
02:03 It's the first time that skateboarding is going to be happening at the Americas, in the continental level.
02:10 This is an effort from the authorities to bring new audiences to the Games, to attract new talent, young talent.
02:17 Just as a fact, from the nine competitors that are competing right now in the women's side, only three were born before the 2006 competitors,
02:29 are from this new millennium. So that tells you a little bit how young the athletes are.
02:34 Keep an eye on a very young athlete. Her name is Raissa Leal from Brazil.
02:40 She's the favorite to win this. She's only 15 years old.
02:44 She competed in Tokyo 2020 when she was 13 years old and took the silver medal.
02:49 Let me check the score real quick. Oh, and look, a surprise.
02:53 Leal, I was telling you, she's a favorite. She was in first place throughout the whole morning.
02:58 But now the Uruguayan athlete, Julieta González, just took the first spot, and she might as well take the gold medal.
03:07 As I was saying, they were wrapping up. We are going to keep an eye on that and bring you all the details of the women's skateboarding competition
03:15 and all the other events that are going to be happening today.
03:18 As I said, there's 19 different events happening today. Eight of those are going to bring medals today.
03:24 So by the end of today, eight new athletes are going to be Pan American gold winners.
03:30 That is it for now. Reporting live from Santiago, Chile, I am Eduardo Arregonesi. Back to you guys.
03:36 Thank you, Eduardo, for your updates. We're going to keep an eye on what's going on at the women's skateboarding team
03:40 and see if the Brazilian athlete can overcome and be again in the first place.
03:48 Well, that was Eduardo from Chile speaking on the latest updates on the Pan American Games that are being held over there.
03:55 over there.
