At the rougher border crossing between Egypt and Gaza, the UN chief urged international
00:04
parties to work together to ensure aid reaches the Gaza Strip.
00:10
Two weeks after Hamas took around 200 Israelis hostage, our correspondent has visited a group
00:15
in Tel Aviv that's trying to bring them home.
00:20
At least two people die in Scotland as Storm Babette lashes parts of northern Europe with
00:25
torrential rain and high winds.
00:32
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Galant visit troops
00:37
near the border with Gaza ahead of an expected ground operation into the densely packed Palestinian
00:43
enclave.
00:44
But house-to-house urban fighting could drastically raise Gaza's death toll as at least 3,785
00:51
Palestinians have already been killed in Israeli airstrikes and millions are urgently waiting
00:56
for much needed aid such as water, food, medicine and fuel.
01:00
"There is no contradiction in standing in solidarity with Israel and acting on the humanitarian
01:10
needs of Palestinians."
01:11
"As I said in Israel, as hard as it is, we cannot give up on peace, we cannot give up
01:18
on a two-state solution.
01:21
Israel and Palestinians equally deserve to live in safety, dignity and peace."
01:27
An American cargo plane carrying armored vehicles landed in Tel Aviv on Thursday as US President
01:33
Joe Biden said he would ask Congress for unprecedented aid for Israel.
01:37
Meanwhile, US intelligence has reported that the explosion at the Al-Hali Arab Hospital
01:42
killed between 100 to 300 people, whilst the Palestinians' officials have said that at
01:47
least 471 people were killed.
01:53
The UN Secretary General arrived at the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing on Friday,
01:59
where more than 200 trucks and some 3,000 tons of aid headed for Gaza were stationed.
02:05
Antonio Guterres called on all international parties to work together to ensure that humanitarian
02:11
aid reaches Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip.
02:15
"That needs everything to survive.
02:18
So these trucks are not just trucks, they are a lifeline.
02:25
They are the difference between life and death for so many people in Gaza.
02:32
And to see them stuck here makes me be very clear.
02:38
What we need is to make them move, to make them move to the other side of this wall,
02:44
to make them move as quickly as possible and as many as possible."
02:50
Egyptian state-linked broadcaster Al-Kahara News said that the Rafah crossing, which is
02:54
the only route into Gaza, would reopen on Friday, but Cairo later said it needed more
02:59
time to repair roads.
03:01
The UN says the first aid delivery into the Gaza Strip via the Rafah border crossing should
03:06
take place in the next day or so.
03:08
Estimates suggest around one million people have been internally displaced in Gaza, including
03:13
over 350,000 people staying in camps set up by the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine
03:19
refugees.
03:23
At the headquarters of the Israeli Forum for the Hostages and Missing Families, lawyers,
03:28
doctors, psychologists and media experts are working around the clock to try to bring the
03:33
hostages back home.
03:34
Two weeks after the attacks, and with anxiety and anger rising amongst both families and
03:39
volunteers, our correspondent Valerie Goria has visited the forum.
03:45
"We are here to ask all governments, all bodies, to bring our people back.
03:52
It's an unjustifiable, inhumane crime against humanity to hold innocent people hostage like
03:58
this.
03:59
About any information about where they are, how they are doing.
04:02
Again, dozens of people with critical medical conditions that need life-saving medication
04:07
that they are not receiving.
04:08
And we know nothing about what's happening."
04:11
There's also anger and frustration at the responses of their own government and the
04:15
international community.
04:17
"Our people are not getting any sort of assistance.
04:22
We've begged everyone, including the Red Cross, including every international organization
04:27
and government to provide medical care for our loved ones and that's not happening.
04:31
We're not receiving any form of aid."
04:35
Dual Israeli-German citizen Yarden Roman Gatt is among the missing.
04:39
She was last seen desperately handing her three-year-old daughter to her husband Eilon
04:43
as they fled Hamas gunmen in the Be'arri kibbutz near Gaza.
04:47
"I always hope that all those interviews, there are also groups of people in Hamas that
04:55
are watching and all I hope is that maybe they'll release a video showing that she's
05:02
safe and sound, saying how important it is for her daughter.
05:08
How do you tell a three-year-old that her grandmother was murdered by the bed people
05:15
that got to her home?
05:17
She saw them.
05:18
She understands.
05:22
I was just scared that she'll ask, 'Is that the same thing that they're going to do to
05:28
mom?'
05:29
I don't even want to think about how they treat them, what they do with them.
05:35
That's going to be the new terror.
05:39
That's going to be everywhere in the world.
05:43
Today it's Israel and it's in the Gaza border and it's Jewish people.
05:51
But tomorrow, who knows?"
05:55
Eilon and her husband managed to escape their abductor's car and as they ran Yarden passed
06:00
her child to him.
06:01
But she wasn't fast enough to escape the chasing gunmen.
06:08
Ukrainian army officials say their troops are holding out against fierce Russian efforts
06:13
to gain control of Avdivka as Moscow seeks to surround the strategically important city
06:18
in eastern Ukraine.
06:20
A video posted by Ukraine's army on Thursday purports to show its commander-in-chief visiting
06:25
the area.
06:26
Kiev says around 900 Russian soldiers were killed or wounded there on Thursday.
06:31
"They have casualties every day.
06:34
At least every day they have casualties because they were told to take up positions.
06:40
They were told not to retreat.
06:43
And their casualties are visible and not visible.
06:45
I didn't count them myself, but every day they have casualties."
06:51
As Ukraine's counter-offensive shows slow progress in Zaporizhia and Bakhmut, Russia
06:56
is trying to regain the initiative.
06:59
Russian state news agency TASS reports that President Vladimir Putin has visited military
07:03
headquarters in Rostov-on-Don, near the border with Ukraine.
07:07
TASS said he met with top military officials who told him Russian forces are "fulfilling"
07:12
their military objectives.
07:18
With world leaders watching the Israel-Hamas conflict, there's concern the West will lose
07:23
focus on its promise of unwavering support for Ukraine.
07:27
The U.S. has contributed more than 43 billion euros in military aid to Kiev to defend against
07:33
Russian attacks.
07:35
Some analysts say Russia will take advantage of what's transpiring in Gaza.
07:40
"Russia has a lot to gain from it.
07:42
The U.S. will be a little bit more distracted.
07:45
There is a little bit of fatigue both in Europe and with the U.S. in terms of giving aid to
07:52
Ukraine.
07:53
We saw that there was already some withholding of aid from Warsaw.
07:57
And if you look at the U.S., the Republicans, particularly the right-wing Republicans, they
08:00
don't want to continue aiding Ukraine."
08:04
The future of America's support for Ukraine will likely hinge on the outcome of its 2024
08:10
presidential election.
08:12
"The world can't really afford to allow the Russians to win.
08:16
If we stop with Ukraine, who knows what will happen next.
08:20
Russia has been very clear that they want to expand their sphere of influence.
08:24
They have had a history of invading other countries, particularly when Putin's approval
08:31
rating isn't particularly good.
08:33
I think given how close Russia is to Europe's doorsteps, there should be genuine fear of
08:40
Russia continuing to infringe on the European countries, whether it be indirectly or directly."
08:51
NATO diplomats meeting in Budapest raised security concerns over what they say is a
08:56
deepening relationship between Russia and Hungary.
09:03
At least two people have died after Storm Babette brought torrential rain and 100-kilometer-an-hour
09:08
winds to Scotland.
09:10
One woman was swept away by a swollen river in the highlands, and a man was killed after
09:15
a tree hit his van near Forfar in Angus.
09:18
Hundreds of people have also been evacuated from their homes.
09:22
Denmark has also been hit.
09:24
Authorities have warned the country may endure the worst storm surge in more than 100 years.
09:28
"We are trying to protect this area from flooding.
09:32
We are putting out these dams behind me, which we will soon be adding water to."
09:42
Ireland has also suffered its worst flooding for years.
09:46
Several towns and villages were inundated, with some areas remaining underwater and without
09:51
power on Thursday.
09:52
Soldiers were called in to help evacuate people from the town of Middleton in County Cork,
09:57
where more than 100 homes were flooded.
10:00
At least 26,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in eastern Ghana, after
10:08
abundant rainfalls caused two hydroelectric dams to overflow, resulting in extensive flooding.
10:15
Some 8,000 people have been rescued in the Volta region bordering Togo.
10:20
Roads and schools have been closed, and while no casualties have been reported, concerns
10:25
have been raised over the next harvest, as the floods have destroyed this season's crops.
10:38
The UK's ruling Conservative Party suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the opposition
10:43
Labour Party in two by-elections on Friday.
10:47
Labour won the seat of Tamworth in central England and the largely rural Mid Bedfordshire
10:52
seat, which had been in Conservative hands since 1931.
10:56
The results are a serious cause for concern for Prime Minister Ryszy Sunak.
11:01
His Tory party are trailing in the national polls, and its losses solidify Labour's status
11:06
as the front-runner ahead of a national election expected next year.
11:14
Police in Warsaw have arrested a 22-year-old man over a bizarre series of thefts in a shopping
11:19
centre in the Polish capital, which left security guards scratching their heads.
11:24
After slipping into a clothes shop once the building was closed, police said the man put
11:29
on new clothes, then froze in the shop window, pretending to be an exhibition mannequin.
11:35
Before being arrested, he still had time to steal jewellery from a stand set up in one
11:39
of the galleries.
11:41
The man has been remanded in custody and faces a 10-year prison sentence.
