00:00 Hi, I'm Isabella Burnham, a reporter for National World.
00:03 Rafe Blackburn, National World Politics editor here in Midd Bedfordshire
00:07 and we have just witnessed a historic night for the Labour Party.
00:10 Mr Blackburn, Alastair Luke, Labour Party, 13,872.
00:17 [Cheering]
00:19 Labour have won the Midd Bedfordshire seat for the first time in its history.
00:23 It's been held by the Tories since 1931.
00:27 In the previous election, the Dean Dories won the majority of a whopping 24,000.
00:33 But Alastair Strathairn is the new Labour MP.
00:36 And I'm here at Tamworth by-election, where Labour's candidate Sarah Edwards has just won the seat.
00:42 [Cheering]
00:45 This is a historic victory, you know, to have a 23.9% swing.
00:49 It's quite astonishing.
00:51 We certainly didn't know what we were going to expect tonight,
00:54 so I think it's really testament to the work that's gone on.
00:57 And I think it sends a really strong message to the country,
01:00 and also that people want change and they're fed up of 13 years of the Conservatives.
01:04 So this is an historic win for Labour tonight,
01:07 and will set a precedent for the general election, which is due to be held next year.
