00:00 Sports here on the AM show with me Mufti Abdullahi. On Wednesday dawn the Black Stars will come
00:07 up against the United States of America in the international friendly in the US, Nashville.
00:13 Well the senior national team of Ghana lost 2-0 to Mexico on Saturday and Chris Hughton
00:20 has called on the boys to respond against the USA.
00:25 Is that it's exactly the same message for the players is that what we don't want is
00:32 that we don't want to leave this international camp with two poor results. So the result
00:44 of that is always that you are looking for a reaction from the team in the second game.
00:53 If you are able to get the right reaction, which I'm quite sure that we will from the
00:58 team, then it gives you a better possibility of putting in a performance that can get something
01:04 out of the game in the second game. So certainly what you have to do is you have to learn from
01:11 the things that you didn't do so well in this game, the things that lost us the game and
01:18 endeavour to put them right in the next game.
01:22 And as you saw in your shot there, isn't it quite interesting that the Black Stars will
01:25 arrive in flight and they have two buses waiting for them. This is because the Ghana Football
01:30 Association apparently chartered a flight and they had every single member within the
01:36 Ghana football ecosystem as well as some media men follow them to the USA. So they went there
01:43 via a chartered flight and they had to order many buses so that they could get everyone
01:48 on board to their destination. Now let's talk about the Executive Council of the Ghana
01:54 Football Association and for the Premier League representatives, Kwesi Appiah, a former Black
01:59 Stars captain and coach, now the head coach of the Sudan national team. He was voted onto
02:06 the Executive Council on October 5 when the GFA assembled in Tamale for his extraordinary
02:13 congress. According to Dr Randy Abe, Kwesi Appiah comes with a world of experience he
02:20 believes will help the Executive Council.
02:23 Well, Kwesi Appiah is a legend, is a legend as a player. A captain of the Black Stars,
02:33 has done a lot for this country and even as a coach, I mean, he worked with me. The first
02:41 ever international trophy that I won as a chairman of a national team was with Kwesi
02:48 Appiah, the All Africa Games in Maputo in 2011. And so he brings a lot on board, I mean
02:58 from a player's perspective and from a technical handlers perception. And don't forget that
03:06 he also currently is a part of the Kodokwa administration and so I think that he also
03:11 brings a different perspective on the table.
03:17 One thing that caught my eye was that in this election, there was only one woman who took
03:22 part in the elections and it was Mrs Gifty Owari Mensah. In terms of gender, you know,
03:27 inclusivity, what do you make of it?
03:29 I mean, it's a shame and it only means that we need to work harder. And guess what? We've
03:39 even been able to achieve this because through legislation, we've decided that it's only
03:45 women who can vie for this position. But even when it comes to women's football, you see
03:48 that about 99% of the owners of the clubs are male and a lot of people who even work
03:56 in that part of the industry are male. And so if we had even opened it up, I'm sure that
04:03 maybe a woman could not even have come through. And so you'd even realize that as part of
04:09 even deepening this and the reforms that we have embarked on with respect to our statutes,
04:17 we have been looking at making some changes, bringing in the position of a second vice
04:23 and letting that position be just for a woman. And so we're trying, what we need to do is
04:28 that we need to perhaps be a bit more deliberate, same way that deliberate act has brought a
04:37 woman at all costs onto the Esko, maybe we need to do a lot more and to try and get a
04:42 lot more women to contest the other constituents. So you're talking about Premier, Division
04:51 One, RFA, the constituent bodies. I mean, we need to try and encourage a lot more women
04:58 to get involved and also to put themselves up for elections.
05:03 The Ghana Premier League and the Great Olympics came up against Accra Lions on Tuesday, on
05:09 Monday rather, at the Accra Sports Stadium and they won that game by three goals to zero.
05:17 Agama Ojima for the Lions, he's giving away possession, Agama goes down from the tackle
05:22 of Shaukan. Akese lays one for Enchi and Afo fails to deal with it first time. Now he makes
05:34 a mistake and Michael Yabua scores. Olympics up by one nil. Pure goalkeeping error and
05:41 the Olympics takes full advantage. Michael Yabua puts the Dade club ahead in the capital
05:47 derby. It's Olympics one, Accra Lions nil at ten minutes at the Accra Sports Stadium.
05:58 Again they've lost possession in a very dangerous area. Here is Agama, can't go past Jima but
06:03 he still has possession. Akese wants it, he goes to Enchi instead. Enchi, great play from
06:08 Enchi, back to Akese. Good ball to find the goal scorer, Yabua. Now he finds Osei, Osei
06:15 shoots from the tight angle, it's a second goal. Again it's Michael Yabua, the rebound
06:21 from Yabua after Michael Osei's effort, not dealt with again properly by Afo. Olympics
06:26 get a second in a space of two minutes. It's Olympics two, Accra Lions nil. Apiga gives
06:33 possession to Yabua. Natmeg Sapiga, here is Yabua trying to set up Enchi but it's a tackle
06:40 from Shao Kahn that referee give your knee coffee whistles and flashes his yellow card
06:46 to take a free kick for great Olympics. That's the Natmeg from Yabua. Now he tries to go
06:51 past his marker, sends one to Enchi and Shao Kahn seems to have gone for the man, another
06:56 ball. It's all about that press from Olympics. We spoke about the fact that it's Emmanuel
07:01 Enchi against the wall. The rebound is gone in and great Olympics have their third goal.
07:08 Emmanuel Enchi makes it three for Olympics. It looks dreadful, dreadful for Accra Lions
07:13 but then the initial free kick, goal, comes against the wall and then it's Enchi again
07:20 who just you know finishes with his left foot. A strong one and Daniel Afo just couldn't
07:26 do anything about that. For a team that has scored just a goal before match day five.
07:34 And three goals for great Olympics against Accra Lions at the Accra Sports Stadium on
07:39 Monday afternoon and Ghanaian swimmer Christian Dia, he has been given the world aquatics
07:46 scholarship. There's more in the following report. Joy is written all over Christian's
07:53 face. He has been granted a lifetime opportunity to enhance his development in Thailand for
08:01 the next 12 months. The swimmer was so overcome with joy that laughter bubbled uncontrollably
08:09 rendering him momentarily speechless. The first thing I have to greet my coach first,
08:18 coach Bibi. He has done the most work for me.
08:36 The 18 year old is one of the baddest swimmers in Ghana having represented the country at
08:42 various swimming tournaments. His hard work did not go unnoticed. To showcase him to the
08:49 world to Ghana as a whole and for our swimmers to know that what they are doing is not in
08:59 vain. The harder they try the better they become. These are some of the privileges that
09:05 we get when they are able to put themselves forth for the country and for themselves as
09:14 well. Christian's passion for swimming was evident from the age of nine. His coach narrates
09:21 the story of how he was discovered. And I remember as small as he was nine years he
09:32 didn't have money to pay for the usage of the facilities. What I saw him doing was he
09:40 comes to the poolside and comes to pick some of the refuse, the rubbish around the pool.
09:54 After which when he finishes one instructor, I mean someone, will tell him okay come and
10:01 let me show you how to swim. Let me teach you how to swim. And that is how Christian
10:10 learned how to swim. So upon learning how to swim he comes to the pool, helps with the
10:18 daily cleaning of the place and then he gets an opportunity to swim. So I think one of
10:26 the days I saw him in the pool swimming and I was like oh this guy has some good strokes.
10:33 I mean he has potential. Why don't we add him. The club was then just one year. So I
10:40 spoke to the president of the club then, Professor Aite, who said okay let's bring him in. Christian
10:50 will be the second beneficiary of the scholarship after national record holder Abeku Jackson.
10:57 The swimmer was warned not to take the opportunity for granted. Abeku was led by an example.
11:04 We had a second opportunity. So he too should go there not as Christian but as an ambassador
11:11 of Ghana swimming to also pave way for other swimmers. To also pave way for us to get more
11:16 and more of the scholarship so that other swimmers who are upcoming who are also looking
11:22 up to him will also get the opportunity to get into the environment that he gets to.
11:27 As Christian steps onto this new chapter he carries not just the weight of his dreams
11:34 but also the hopes of those who aspire to tread the waters of triumph. Haruna Mubarak
11:41 for JOY Sports. This is our AM Sports here with me Muftahu Nabila Abla, the leadership
11:48 of Ghana Football Association. They have paid their last respect to former chairman of the
11:53 Ghana Football Association Alaji MND Jaula who died in the USA earlier this year. And
12:00 the GFA president and the marketing manager of the Ghana Football Association as well
12:05 as the greater Accra regional football association chairman Samuel Abouabri. They were all at
12:11 the grave site of the former chairman of the Ghana Football Association to pay their last
12:17 respects to him. We will have details of that in our subsequent bulletins. This is our wrap
