00:00 is Sunday about for the Patriots? I'm repeating the the the intro here. It's about Mac Jones'
00:05 future as an NFL starting quarterback really because if he's bad in this game just like he
00:10 was against the Saints and like he was against the Cowboys you have to bench him like but if
00:14 he's average he's probably going to continue along this season as the Patriots starter so
00:18 you need at least average play out of Mac Jones for him to keep starting moving forward but if
00:23 he gets benched again if they get blown out again you have to put someone else in there.
00:27 Yeah and that was one of the quotes again from from an AFC Pro Scout look he's a he's a panic
00:32 player versus pressure and you just can't have that but I've talked enough about Mac versus
00:35 pressure and how he actually was not that bad so I'm with you I see this game as either a turning
00:40 point where you can salvage some of the season I said the last game was must win they lost they
00:45 lost badly the season as a whole is pretty much going down the sink but or it'll be a point of
00:50 no return. Patsy DeFerrits is brought to you by FanDuel the exclusive wedger rig partner of the
00:55 CLNS Media Network. Okay recording here Thursday afternoon back in the road office Gillette Stadium
01:03 a dour place I think it's it's fair to say recording with partner Doug Kive because as I
01:07 joked last time there's no way out for him it's like the Patriots offense he is connected here
01:12 at the Herald he is stuck with me doing the podcast now almost bi-weekly but on a note about
01:17 Doug and the offense you and I published a story here today about Mac Jones the essence was
01:22 basically how did he go with of course a lot of organizational help or lack thereof in about 20
01:28 months from promising rookie quarterback face of the franchise to a guy who's completely lost bench
01:33 in two straight games six turnovers and of course we're going to cover that here as well as Sunday's
01:38 game against the Raiders which I think they can win I don't know what's wrong with me there's a
01:42 lot it's a big long list but I think they can win of course here in the Patsy DeFerrits podcast
01:46 brought to you by FanDuel the exclusive wagering partner of the CLNS Media Network so before we
01:50 spit it out break down the game three two one and make our game picks about that story as you're
01:57 gathering your reporting and I'm gathering mine what what struck you most just about the last 20
02:02 months and what we learned for this story I think just like someone put it very succinctly uh to me
02:07 where they're like yeah Mac Jones is physically limited uh struggles against pressure and makes
02:13 bad mistakes and I was just like that's a pretty brutal combination it's like well yeah it is
02:18 because I mean as everyone knows like Mac Jones the the big strength of his coming out of Alabama
02:25 was his brain what he could do pre-snap knowing the system everything but then like that'll still
02:30 kind of exist like he's a smart quarterback he can do things before the snap but then once the
02:34 ball comes to him he just panics and throws the ball to the other team and like you can't have
02:38 that if you're also a physically limited quarterback so to me that's what it all sort of
02:43 boils down to right now obviously there's much larger things here at play as well just the way
02:48 that would that the Patriots have handled their personnel you know how the offensive line has
02:51 struggled the wide receiver everything but as someone else put it to me it starts with the
02:55 quarterback it does I mean that's that's the NFL and I think it's interesting that when we speak
03:02 to people within the organization and around league circles in front offices staffers sometimes
03:06 getting player perspective about this there was a real divide like I think a lot of the people
03:11 you spoke to looked at this and said this is what Mac is and the counter to that would be this is
03:15 what Mac has always been again going back to Alabama how many times have I said on this podcast
03:20 pocket bound point guard okay you know he's not throwing outside the numbers and so someone
03:24 suggested to you that like the book kind of got out at him yeah at the end of the 21 season what
03:29 also happened at the end of that season his rookie year was a turnover in coaching and so now three
03:34 different offensive coordinators three different quarterbacks coach and I don't know how many
03:38 quarterbacks can survive in that environment let alone one that as one executive told me I don't
03:42 know what their plan was at the offensive line which we've talked about the receivers and the
03:46 separation yada yada the thing that struck me and this is almost independent of Mac but is tied into
03:51 that environment is that this front office as I very recently learned it's kind of gone away from
03:57 analytics as part of their evaluating tools which would help you with things like identifying
04:02 receivers who can separate or offensive tackles who are better in pass sets versus just what
04:08 you're seeing on the tape when you isolate exactly what they're doing and there are a lot of smart
04:11 people in this front office but that was jaw-dropping to me knowing how whether you look
04:15 at the eagles some stuff done in Kansas City or other places around the league like just to not
04:21 use some tools that are in there in the bag or have dabbled with them as I know they have was
04:25 crazy yeah I also think there's an element here that we didn't get fully get into but it's worth
04:30 exploring a little bit like Mac Jones team at Alabama was so loaded there's things that you
04:36 just can't really see from a quarterback prospect of like he's getting hit so much more now with the
04:42 Patriots and at some point if you're getting hit that often you're going to start responding
04:47 differently to pressure unless you're just a masochist back there essentially and like that's
04:52 something that you don't see when you've got five future NFL players in front of you and three future
04:57 NFL wide receivers to throw to and a you know a undrafted title like all these guys in place like
05:04 I don't know how this changes draft evaluation or anything but like when a when a guy's on a team
05:09 that's that good I'm not sure if you actually see the full picture of what the player is right
05:14 especially coming into a new system and that could go for a lot of quarterback evaluations like the
05:19 Patriots struggles in identifying talent is not unique to them we don't write this story to pile
05:24 on Mac Jones to have taken a delight in what's happened in the Patriots where these are the worst
05:27 losses back to back of the Belichick era it's just to say how did we get here and they seem to suffer
05:32 the analytics stuff aside which is just they had a group of analytics people in the building they
05:38 were here for a year or two and then left Nick Cassario around his last couple of years dabble
05:42 with this and then he leaves and is open about what he does at the Sloan Sports right analytics
05:47 conference at MIT every single year and the crafts own a sports analytics group so that's
05:51 the crazy part to me so that that part you could pin on them but the rest of this teams miss on
05:55 quarterbacks teams miss and for agent signings Johnnie Smith Juju Smith Schuster it's just this
06:01 storm that has come in along with Max reaction to some of that adversity is one person use the word
06:06 bratty to me that has led them down you know this this path where there seems to be no way out yeah
06:13 no I mean it really does and I mean I will get into that now with what this Raiders game means
06:17 for Mac and the Patriots and the offense and everything like that but I mean he's just been
06:22 so bad and yeah there were you know things behind the scenes last year too between you know Mac and
06:27 Belichick and the crafts and all these different things that play into this as well and I will say
06:31 that you know Mac right now is generally respected around yes because of the hours that he puts in
06:37 you know the fact that he is willing to he likes spending time with guys outside the facility
06:42 outside the locker room that he is friends with a lot of these guys so I think that's what makes
06:46 it a little bit more difficult for players too is that they want to and obviously they're going to
06:50 keep saying positive things to us in the media but I think that they generally believe a lot of
06:54 the things that they're saying but he's just not very good right now yeah and the lead of the story
07:00 if you haven't written it again of course we're going to encourage you to read our own work but
07:03 the essence is there were many people in that building on Monday and reaching we're reaching
07:08 out hearing from people again I don't know if you heard I was at a wedding on Sunday I haven't said
07:12 that a million times but heard from people after that game going like oh the media it were you know
07:18 you guys are going to be honest this week I'm like well yeah we all watched that game but the issue
07:22 was those same people go you know I don't think Matt can start right and he is we heard that from
07:27 Bill O'Brien Tuesday Bill Balashek confirmed it Wednesday and the reality that is it's because
07:32 they don't have any better options no and that's on Bailey's Appie and it's on Will Greer but we're
07:37 moving forward as Patriots are with Matt Jones so same start segment we typically start out with
07:42 in these game preview episodes spit it out 30 seconds what is Sunday about for the Patriots
07:47 I'm repeating the the the intro here it's about Matt Jones future as an NFL starting quarterback
07:53 really because if he's bad in this game just like he was against the Saints and like he was against
07:58 the Cowboys you have to bench him like but if he's average he's probably going to continue along this
08:02 season as the Patriots starter so you need at least average play out of Mac Jones for him to
08:07 keep starting moving forward but if he gets benched again if they get blown out again you have to put
08:12 someone else in there yeah and that was one of the quotes again from from an AFC Pro Scout look he's
08:17 a he's a panic player versus pressure and you just can't have that but I've talked enough about Mac
08:20 versus pressure and how he actually was not that bad so I'm with you I see this game as either a
08:25 turning point where you can salvage some of the season I said the last game was must win they
08:30 lost they lost badly the season as a whole is pretty much going down the sink but or it'll be
08:36 a point of no return like one in five is one in five you go on the road lose badly you're gonna
08:39 play Buffalo you're gonna play Miami I think we know how that game those games are gonna go so
08:43 it'll be one of those two a brief turning point or a point of no return all right let's get into
08:49 the week that was aside from our story aside from Mac stuff starting over has been the big theme and
08:54 we keep asking players and we keep asking Bill the point of he was the one who birthed this idea on
08:59 Sunday after the game and we asked him on Wednesday what what does that incorporate the last two days
09:03 and his answer was basically everything it's like okay I don't know I I think fans would want to
09:08 know what starting over means we've never heard him speak like this right and he says anything
09:12 that encompasses us playing better the other word that we've heard is fundamentals yeah do you take
09:16 anything away from that does that tell you what we might see on Sunday I think that starting over
09:20 means nothing like based on what everything that Bill Belichick has said and like I mean if you go
09:25 back to Mac Jones Mac Jones three weeks ago was basically talking about starting over or maybe I
09:30 don't know if it was three or two or four whatever it was but he's saying like you need to identify
09:34 the play and who the number one you know the target is on the play and where you're throwing
09:37 the ball and whether it's a run run player a pass play like those are all things that are starting
09:42 over so I don't think that this was some like come to Jesus like we're throwing everything out
09:48 opening up the depth chart like starting completely over I guess we'll see on Sunday if things look
09:52 drastically different but to me it just feels like it was just a phrase that Belichick used
09:59 that maybe he even regrets using because of how many questions he's now got about it and he was
10:04 getting a little bit yeah I feel like he's getting a little bit saltier about it throughout the week
10:09 about what the response is that he's giving but it's like you're the one who said it so what does
10:13 that mean and obviously he's not gonna spill all the beans but there's just there's only so many
10:18 things you can do and David Andrews talked a little bit about this yesterday to start over
10:24 in week six because you still have to prepare for an opponent like you still need to practice
10:29 and prepare for this game so you can't just go back to a training camp schedule in week six you
10:34 have to prepare for an opponent so I don't think you really can start over unless that means
10:38 starting over with a new quarterback which they're not doing no and snap into NFL action this season
10:43 with America's number one sports book right now new customers get $200 that's two zero zero and
10:49 bonus bets guaranteed when you place a five dollar bet that's two hundred dollars in bonus
10:54 bets win or lose so if you've been thinking about joining fandome you hear me make these ad reads
10:59 and hopefully don't fast forward get your money and get into the action right now the app is easy
11:05 to use there's a wide range of betting options including spreads player props over unders and
11:10 lots more visit fandome.com/boston and kick off the NFL season fandole an official partner of
11:16 the NFL $200 in bonus bets with just your first five dollar bet the other interesting wrinkle
11:26 about this week too which had me in a pretzel as we were writing this story preparing it
11:31 and the Patriots go players are getting off Monday but they're going to come in and practice Tuesday
11:34 I'm going okay that could be the signal of a new quarterback changes to the system as far as we've
11:39 heard nothing of that sort has happened right other part about the job is you know we need to
11:44 have other reporters on alerts you know anything that happens for Madam Schaft or Ian Rapp or some
11:49 other folks on the beat you know anytime they pass gas or like we figured out it's it's on
11:55 our phones popping up and so Adam Schefter had some comments which one passes gas the most
11:58 I can't say that it's off the record it's a terrible example a joke by me moving forward
12:03 starting over here in this point Adam Schefter was a well-documented relationship with bell
12:08 Belichick suggested that the offense will look very different Sunday against the Raiders so I'm
12:12 waiting for that to happen we haven't heard anything I do have some ideas about how it could
12:17 look different and will be better against the Raiders but they're not ideas that are different
12:22 based on here's your clear plan B they're specifically tailored to this is how you
12:26 should attack the Raiders which is a game plan or changes I would say if they were three and two
12:32 or two and three right and they're a game plan team right yeah it's always going to look a little
12:36 bit different I also think that the offense is just going to look different in general because
12:40 of injuries quite honestly like Mario Douglas concussion Juju Smith-Schuster concussion almost
12:46 certainly both those guys are not playing on Sunday so you're probably going to see Taekwon
12:50 Thornton you might see Jalen Ragour you're going to see Kendrick Bourne probably playing out of
12:53 the slot you're going to see Devante Parker maybe Keishon Booty so that alone the offense is going
12:57 to look different but to this like to this point of starting over the other point that would make
13:02 is that almost all those guys have already played the snaps like they've already rotated wide
13:06 receivers and what else can you possibly do about the offensive line at this point because what
13:11 have they played like 10 offensive linemen nine something like that so it's probably going to be
13:16 a new group of offensive linemen I'm assuming Riley Reif is probably going to start somewhere
13:20 in this group yeah but that's not starting over that's just doing basically what they've done
13:24 the last four weeks out of necessity all right well let's get into it uh when the Patriots have
13:28 the ball they're going to be facing Las Vegas Raiders who are two and three they are 28th
13:33 by DVOA this is a bottom five team according to some advanced metrics that we should all trust
13:37 and love their last four games consist of a 17 to 13 win over Green Bay last Monday uh the week
13:43 before Jimmy Garoppolo's concuss Aiden O'Connell fourth-round rookie at a Purdue starts they lose
13:48 17 to 24 against the Chargers the week before that they lose another one score game Sunday night
13:54 against Pittsburgh 18 to 23 and the week before that week to go to Buffalo get housed 38 to 10
14:00 that ball is one point win over Denver and their season opener so last week with Mike Giardi I
14:04 described the Saints game as like a Spider-Man meme bowl you know you're looking at the Saints
14:08 they want to play the same way they're built similarly and I and speaking with some people
14:12 this week again for that Mac story around the league they're like you know the Raiders could
14:16 win right it's hard but try telling that to people around here not just me because again I see a
14:22 pathway you mean the Patriots could win the Patriots could win yes yes because they are 27
14:26 by DVOA the you know yeah that is BFF is higher on the Raiders but neither of these teams have
14:33 scored more than 20 points the Raiders haven't even gotten to 20 points you have a turnover
14:37 prone quarterback defensively they want to play man coverage Patrick Graham defensive coordinator
14:41 for the Ravers came from New England and carried that system around with him but they can't play
14:46 a ton of man do a lot of you know poor players in their secondary so when the Patriots have the ball
14:51 and they're 28th on DVOA and the Raiders are 24th on defense let's skip the Mac Jones numbers like
14:58 he was drastically worse against the Raiders last year and I don't know if that was a flash in the
15:05 pan they only got pressure on him about 20 percent of the time but again this is a defense it's bad
15:09 against tight ends and I would just tell him throw away is not a bad play in this game right because
15:15 that that's the whole starting point is the turnovers like opponents have scored 22 points
15:19 thanks to you and you've scored just three so that that's where I start here yeah I mean I think that
15:26 it is kind of a Spider-Man meme game except I think the Patriots have a more talented defense
15:32 overall maybe than the Raiders but the Patriots don't have Max Crosby coming off the edge so
15:36 that's obviously a big point towards the Raiders but I would say that you know if the Raiders
15:42 defense looks a lot like what the Patriots were showing this summer in training camp probably a
15:49 bad thing for Mac Jones in this Patriots offense because Mac Jones the Patriots offense was under
15:53 siege from the Patriots defense all in training camp and someone actually asked me a mailbag
15:58 question about this of like why didn't the Patriots know that their offense was going to
16:01 struggle based on what they saw in training camp and there's two points there one is that no one
16:07 can actually sack the quarterback in training camp so you're still kind of seeing you don't
16:10 totally see what everything's going to look like if it's not a full contact practice the other
16:14 thing is that the Patriots were hoping that the offensive line was going to get healthy and that
16:18 a lot of that pressure would be fixed the offensive offensive line has kind of gotten healthy and it
16:22 still hasn't helped so I don't know I could actually see a pretty similar game to what
16:27 Mac Jones had last year where he is going to be taking a lot of sacks he is going to have to throw
16:32 the ball away and yeah he's just not he can't have the same as someone put it to me dumb mistakes
16:39 against the Raiders they did against the Saints and Cowboys otherwise this could be another 31
16:44 to nothing or whatever it is games as Patriots are losing so I don't think that this is a tough game
16:50 for Mac Jones to fully rebound I think it's the Raiders based on what they showed last year
16:55 what the what the Raiders run on defense and just how familiar Josh McDaniels is with Mac Jones
17:00 he's the man who built him up right and now last year as I just said drastically
17:04 worse that season in a really difficult year for Mac Jones the whole offense
17:08 against the Raiders he was 13 to 31 for 112 yards but in retrospect the most important number was
17:15 zero for turnovers because that game ended as we all remember you know Jacoby Myers lateral from
17:21 Ron Mondry Stevenson Jacoby Myers lateral to Chandler Jones back the other way before then
17:25 that was a 24-24 game and Mac footwork was a mess he was 7 of 23 over the last three quarters over
17:32 the middle of the field completed 30 of his passes and had a bunch of overthrows so some of that I
17:39 see is like the McDaniels knows him but those are fundamental errors you can correct and he talked
17:43 about it this week well my feet are pointed in the right place which were off from the start of the
17:47 Saints game and my eyes are looking at the right target like things go pretty well but as you
17:52 mentioned that's also something he said two or three weeks ago aside from that I already said
17:57 this but I think if you give him a focus of just look we're going to have half field reads if it's
18:02 not their throwaway a throwaway is not a bad play in this game because again the Raiders have not
18:06 scored more than 20 points all season so you don't need to get to 24 or 27 or 30 to win this game
18:13 the other thing I think they can do is hone his focus like I mentioned half field reads he's still
18:19 a top 12 quarterback by EPA believe this or not over the middle of the field that's ahead of
18:24 Patrick Mahomes I don't understand how that works I trust EPA with not my life but like you know a
18:31 very distant relative and the other idea is just to get him in more play action which I think you'll
18:36 need to set up with the run which there's not a statistical correlation but like the Raiders need
18:40 to respect it because Mac off of play action 69 this season 7.6 yards per attempt and a passer
18:45 rating of about 100 yeah I mean someone pointed this out to me last week against the Saints
18:49 Patriots start off with what like a seven or eight yard run and then two passes and they go three now
18:55 it's like that would have been a good opportunity for them to maybe establish that run like go with
19:00 what worked on first down like try to pick up those extra two or three yards on the ground
19:05 try to move down the field eat up some clock but they go back to the passing game and it doesn't
19:09 work so I do think that there is something there uh with trying to run the ball as much as you can
19:13 against the Raiders like you said simplify the offense a little bit um maybe not the greatest
19:18 week to do that because I'm not sure if you really want to simplify an offense against Patrick Graham
19:22 and the Raiders who who know you so well but I mean like a lot of those things that were working
19:26 for Mac Jones when he was a rookie and for Bailey's happy last year and his two starts like the play
19:32 action and simplifying things and scheming things up like the Patriots have shown in the past that
19:38 those things can work so I think that that's almost maybe what you have to go back to basics on
19:43 start over and just simplify things down to down to the fundamentals on offense and and just keep
19:48 this thing as simple as possible and just pray that Mac Jones doesn't decide to throw the ball
19:53 away to the other team or pray that Jacoby Myers does throw the ball to the opposing team and maybe
19:59 like Kyle Duggar can catch an error lateral from Jacobi Myers. Can you imagine and I don't care if
20:04 he completes this I just want it somewhere in Josh McDaniel's play sheet that it's a double pass and
20:08 Jacobi Myers is the one throwing the second because there's just a certain F you in there
20:12 where he came from the F.S. school. Yeah he does for his career as we've seen you mentioned the
20:18 receivers Juju Smith-Hooster, Pop Douglas missed their second state practice today Thursday the
20:23 team is leaving tomorrow so it looks highly unlikely either of them is going to be available
20:27 frankly in the Juju front I don't care right now but this offense just given his lack of production
20:32 6.1 yards for 6.1 is a target or catch her catch. His routes are rounded yeah they're poor even when
20:43 he's the designed rub player on these kind of pick route and combinations he's not getting there
20:48 so having him off the field frankly just might be an upgrade because I reported and we talked
20:52 about here in this podcast they didn't see him as a top five pass catcher right after week one.

22:24 i'd call that a winning bet pop douglas is another issue but taekwon thorn is going to step in yeah
22:31 he caught 22 of 45 targets last year it was a disappointing year yeah what what can you expect
22:37 from him on sunday even if maybe there's some addition by subtraction than juju i i i hate to
22:42 do this because like ideally taekwon thorn would be this like high upside promising player but
22:48 we saw so much of him last year and he barely did anything i mean he he was he had he played
22:54 like 51 of snaps or something more than kettering point went up with less than 300 yards so like
22:59 that's just not good and i think that he can stretch the field i think that he can add a
23:03 speed element but i don't know if the raiders necessarily need to respect it because he's had
23:08 drop issues he gets hurt all the time like he he's he's a very thin frail type of wide receiver so i
23:14 think that you can bully him at the line pretty well i don't think he's gonna be playing like
23:18 on the line of scrimmage is an extra wide receiver so that helps him a little bit get
23:22 off the line of scrimmage but i'm just not expecting that much i think the most interesting
23:26 thing about this week if juju and demario douglas as we expect are out of this game
23:32 is that someone else has to step up in the slot i don't think that's gonna be taekwon thorn because
23:35 he's not that type of player devante parker is your x y receiver they don't really have that
23:40 third slot guy like demario douglas is the backup to juju smith schuster so i think you see kendrick
23:45 born step in the slot and maybe you know maybe that connection between mac and kendrick born
23:51 finally pays off here they work him into some slants like he's not he's not demario douglas
23:56 and his ability to get open and man coverage or make plays after the catch but i think that he can
24:01 be you know he can be a chain mover in the slot if he needs to be so i think that that will help a
24:06 little bit uh but yeah we'll probably see a lot more of taekwon thorn um keyshawn booty might get
24:12 some snaps in this game i'm interested to see if jalen ray or gets uh put in the mix as well because
24:16 someone else has to play wide receiver and uh the patriots were pleased with him practicing early in
24:21 the season here's to see if now these injuries actually get him into the mix and like i don't
24:26 know do they shock us and have jalen rigor play more than taekwon thorn like that that's something
24:31 that i'm not like i haven't heard that or anything like that but that wouldn't necessarily shock me
24:35 you know he's actually been practicing two things one is last year when taekwon thorn came back from
24:41 that collarbone injury played week five against alliance same thing started on ir came back he
24:46 didn't have a single padded practice that week and came in and they threw him into the fire that
24:50 was either they don't care or they believe in him that much and he went and played the second thing
24:54 is have i been saying jalen rager's name incorrectly this whole time no i might be
24:57 jalen ray gore belongs in the game of thrones like just on your way down the king's road is
25:04 the ray gore jalen yeah oh it's an o at the end so that throws it a little bit yeah yeah i've been
25:09 teaching olivia how to read and like the english language is broken yeah she's like she's like
25:15 trying to sound out words and i'm like no that's a long a no that's a short like and i'm just like
25:19 how would she know she's six like how would she know that it's an a or an r it's that's beside
25:25 the point yeah it's frustrating um to your point about who's going to play the slot i think the
25:30 answer is going to be a tight end i think it's going to be like a sickie and part of this is
25:35 again i'd laid out hey i think there are things the patriots can do um more play action keep mac
25:40 over the middle of the field i think they're going to bulk the hell up for this game and the way and
25:44 play a ton of two back ton of two tight end sets sometimes even combine them into play 22 personnel
25:50 because you look at their game last year just about half their snaps featured either multiple
25:53 backs or multiple tight ends and eight of their first 11 plays were just that we're going to come
25:58 in and pull you over and a lot of that was the running game okay and when you look at the raiders
26:02 defense like you know mike gosicki is not a run blocker but he is someone who can a relative to
26:08 his teammates winning against man coverage which the raiders want to do and he plays tight end a
26:12 position that the raiders rank in the bottom 12 in the league by dva at defending so whether you're
26:18 bulking up to run and he split out a little bit where he comes down and cracks on you know the
26:22 defensive end or he's sift blocking on the inside zone and going opposite the flow of the block
26:26 because he's going to get the backside guy who can't chase around he's just going to get in his
26:30 way he has a real function in this game specific to multiple backs i would love to see remandre
26:35 and zeke on the field at the same time because the raiders are allowing 5.2 yards per carry
26:40 to teams that use multiple backs on the same set this year and the patriots can run in the middle
26:46 they're actually about league average when going between the tackles it's when they go outside
26:50 and they have these weird pulling pin and pull plays where trent brown's on the move they're
26:54 getting nowhere because badarian lows on the other side and they can't block that's what i think they
26:58 need to do is a lot of these drives are going to result in puns but we're going to keep pounding
27:02 away at the middle because this is the bad raiders run defense we're going to do with multiple tight
27:06 ends and belch had called them one of the best in the league this year i don't know what numbers
27:09 support that it's not yards they're bottom by 12 by dva epa success rate total yards like just vibes
27:17 yeah yeah just just and i just think they're going to play that kind of drag this game into the bud
27:23 and mac again a throwaway is not a bad play right and that's the whole gameplay yeah no i think that
27:28 yeah maybe get creative a little bit um kendrick bourne getting some carries yeah jillen regular
27:33 regular maybe maybe get him some carries out some break or yes use his speed uh because i mean
27:39 he ran like a four four seven but uh one of the things i heard about him is that he's just like
27:43 incredibly fast in practice it might not be able to catch the ball but like
27:46 might be able to carry the ball a little bit more motion yeah you know the patriots have struggled
27:51 defensively and let's jump to their defense here after i finish this point with plays in motion
27:56 their bottom 10 league and drunk plays that have motion at the snap and it forces communication
28:00 it's a little bit difficult so i can see kendrick bourne getting emotion taking the end rounds or
28:04 jillen regular uh being there so when the raiders have the ball patriots are 12th on defense by dva
28:11 the raiders are 31st that's second worst in the league folks and it's because they are second
28:15 worst passing and they are 29th by the run jimmy g has seven picks this year he has a 68.8 completion
28:22 percentage 917 yards and six touchdowns and the patriots are looking at thank you thank god because
28:30 they have two turnovers and that is the worst in the entire league is this the week they get their
28:36 third takeaway i want to say yes oh please say yes you are so down on the offense and rightfully so
28:42 they're not doing it it has to be it just simply asked me i do think that getting jc jackson back
28:50 helps because he is a ball hawk he is always near the ball he he takes good chances so i do think
28:55 they will it's just it's been kind of mind-blowing to see how few turnovers they've gotten this
29:01 season because they're usually i think near the top of the league in turnovers yeah um or takeaways
29:06 i should say on defense so no i think that getting jc jackson back helps and getting jonathan jones
29:12 back in the mix i think helps as well maybe not even so much on interceptions but he's pretty
29:16 good at punching that ball out sometimes on some forced fumbles so i think they kind of like if
29:22 the offense is as bad as it is which it is i think that maybe you have to take a few more chances on
29:28 defense to try to get some takeaways to to get your offense in an advantageous position field
29:35 position wise so yeah i think i think jimmy's good for for one or two turnovers in this game
29:41 and the way to do it has been evident i think for years uh dating back to when he was starting out
29:46 in san francisco it's pressure yeah he and tarik carr to bring back the spider-man meme are looking
29:51 at each other and going hey you're making 15 more million dollars for my old team because derrick
29:55 cars in new orleans making 40 a year jimmy's making 25 for the raiders and he is the third
30:00 worst quarterback under pressure this season according to football focus a 36 completion
30:05 percentage zero touchdowns and four picks so brian or brian belichick steve belichick last
30:11 year in his head to have matchup with josh mcdaniel's through mcdaniel's through the sink
30:15 adam okay we'll go six offensive linemen we'll go multiple tight ends and we'll spread the field
30:19 and go empty like they absorbed that initial script and then steve belichick spun the dial
30:24 at josh more than you saw in any game last year except for maybe the first buffalo game zone
30:28 pressures three-man rushes sim pressures you know all-out blitzes i think you do the same thing to
30:34 jimmy yeah i mean the the tricky part is to not have obviously matthew judo in this game and i
30:40 thought i know you did as well i thought this was going to be like the highest potential patriot
30:45 pass rush that we had seen maybe like i don't know since the dante high tower those types of
30:50 days a lot of bad takes to start the season and just like it hasn't come to fruition so far this
30:54 season and one big factor is that kian white hasn't been as consistent as you would like to
30:59 see him as a pass rusher josh josh uche is still bringing pressure but he can't be the only one
31:04 doing it detrich wise hasn't been that productive so i think this is a big game actually for kian
31:09 white to bring some pressure uh for from defensive end because if it's not him it's probably not
31:15 going to be and for you jennings it's probably not going to be john lining to buy like these
31:17 other guys who play on the edge or more run defense players so that's the thing that scares
31:22 me a little bit i do think that there are ways to get pressure from defensive backs though
31:26 um if they do want to go with some all-out blitzes or some you know safety blitzes or
31:31 corner blitzes because miles brian is actually a pretty good blitzer johnson jones has been a
31:35 pretty good blitzer in the past kyle duggar can rush the passer like they do have adrian phillips
31:39 is a guy who could rush the pass in the past i think that if you are mixing things up like that
31:43 uh then you can get pressure after jimmy garoppolo but if you're doing it for more
31:48 traditional manner the patriots just have not been very good at bringing pressure this season
31:52 yeah and they bought they brought a lot of pressure and they didn't get a single sack
31:55 bringing pressure at derrick carr last week again knowing he would melt eventually and he just didn't
31:59 because they didn't get home uh and part of that was a four-man rush but i look at this game and
32:03 let's say okay they damn it up like josh is ahead they've got max protect whatever the case is jimmy
32:08 standing in the pocket i can tell you he's going to one of three guys devontae adams hall of fame
32:12 receivers belichick said this week old friend jacoby myers talked a lot about him this week
32:16 in other places let's skip over that and josh jacobs because no other raiders player has more
32:21 than six catches on this roster so that's easy to say just cover these three guys but it's a little
32:28 harder when those three are devontae adams jacoby myers and josh jacobs how would you handle the
32:32 raiders from a coverage plan understanding again this is the second worst passing offense in the
32:36 league but the talent says they're going to come around eventually i mean i think what they will
32:40 do is focus most of their attention on devontae adams just because that's what bill belichick
32:45 typically does tries to take away the best player and that could actually mean a pretty big game for
32:49 jacoby myers which wouldn't be great from an optics perspective but i think that that is
32:53 probably the way to win this game is to take devontae adams a lot more seriously um than
32:58 jacoby myers so i think that's what i would probably do maybe stick you know test jc jackson
33:04 see how he can do against devontae adams mix in some double teams as well because obviously
33:08 you're not going to double team him on every single snap um yeah i mean that's probably the
33:13 way that would do it and then i think you can trust like hunter hunter renfrow has been so
33:18 unproductive over the last couple seasons that i don't think that you really necessarily fear
33:22 miles bryant being able to cover hunter renfrow out of the slot in this game uh so i guess i
33:27 would probably leave you know jonathan jones or you know as as covering jacoby myers and
33:32 i don't know i'm kind of curious to see how that matchup would look because it's probably not one
33:36 that we even saw that often um i guess we saw pretty often in training camp with those guys
33:41 matched up in the slot not sure off the top of my head who won that more often but yeah i think
33:46 that's probably the way that would handle it um i don't know like could the raiders just give the
33:50 patriots hunter renfrow for this game they need a slot receiver like just like let him like wear
33:55 number 13 on the patriots for one game and and then like give them back to the raiders or maybe
34:00 just trade them to the patriots in general because the patriots could probably use someone like
34:03 hunter renfrow right now and the raiders aren't using him so you know again we could talk more
34:07 about josh jacobs and bellichick called him a top five running back in the entire league going into
34:12 this but their offensive line isn't very good you've heard me say this before rushing success
34:15 is a function of blocking and defensive box count so the running back is a guy we all watch it's not
34:20 actually all on him whether he gains a ton of yards or not so i don't really care about josh
34:23 jacobs in this game what you're great to say when he has over 20 catches but i would think most of
34:28 those catches are a function of jimmy being under pressure yeah and looking for check downs or
34:31 their screens so really i focus my attention on adams and myers and i say to jonathan jones you
34:37 are going to shadow jacoby myers this entire game you're giving up a couple of inches but he's not
34:41 someone who's a threat after the catch now you understand how to play against bigger receivers
34:45 stick with him and then shadow or double flat out davante adams because jc jackson is not 100
34:51 he was spotted icing his knee in the locker room after tuesday's practice a walkthrough so you need
34:56 to help and that other side and davante adams is banged up too he had a shoulder injury he had
35:00 a okay game on monday night i just think that's the most straightforward plan and this is a defense
35:05 where i talked about communication they're missing tackles they're not communicating as well keep a
35:10 simple plan and just say you have to beat us some other way yeah no no i agree with that and yeah i
35:15 think that that's yeah jonathan jones jacoby myers interesting matchup because it's like speed
35:20 against a slower wide receiver size against a smaller cornerback but i don't i don't hate
35:24 jonathan jones in that matchup no punching ball but i would bet there are some nights you don't
35:30 feel like cooking dinner or maybe even lunch or maybe even getting up to make breakfast well good

36:36 meals.com slash callahan 50 to get 50 off your first meals no more cooking folks it's right there
36:41 just click x factor i'm gonna go with juan bentley i just said i don't care about josh jacobs i'm
36:46 gonna walk that back uh just a little bit and juan bentley had a sack last year against the
36:51 raiders he's involved in a lot of those sim pressures which are basically four-man rushes
36:56 one of the someone on the defensive line drops out and you replace him with a fourth rusher
36:59 typically linebacker safety john belly needs to get through up the middle like he did in that
37:04 opening drive against saints and get a sack and he'll be isolated a lot on josh jacobs probably
37:09 in coverage and he needs to limit those yards after the catch run after catch and i don't know
37:14 if he can do it because the patriots are 25th past defense against running backs and that starts with
37:19 him it's never been a strength of his game but they've done a better job mitigating and as a guy
37:23 who's a captain you're leading tackler someone who's going to be used a lot past our situations
37:27 he's got to have a big game on sunday yeah it's really never been a strength of the patriots
37:30 defense and say like those like bigger slower linebackers in general but never really hurt
37:34 them that much in the past uh x factor for me would be jc jackson uh just see what that knee
37:40 looks like see how effective he can be see if you can play a near full share of snaps in this game
37:46 uh because if it's not him and if he's only playing 30 to 50 percent of snaps then you probably see
37:53 sean wade against devontae adams with help and like i said you don't oh you can't always provide
37:58 help on a player um so then that would maybe force you to shift some things around so i do think that
38:04 jc jackson his health his ability to to take away the ball is all key in this game all right well
38:09 let's get to the keys three keys two matchups one wild card three two one breakdown always on the
38:14 podcast we haven't talked about max crosby yet he's coming for the folks who are screaming going
38:18 like how do you handle him when your offensive line stinks um is he in either one of your keys
38:24 uh no no okay yes all right we'll keep waiting yeah yeah we will get to it yeah um yeah so one
38:31 of my keys is we talked about earlier is just forcing takeaways like forcing turnovers to
38:37 against jimmy garoppolo as i mentioned i think jc jackson's gonna be a big part of that like you
38:42 said you have to get a lot of pressure against jimmy garoppolo but there's definitely ways
38:45 that you can force mistakes out of jimmy garoppolo patriots steve belichick bill belichick they all
38:52 know jimmy garoppolo about as well as anyone uh he was in the building for three and a half years so
38:56 if anyone can force mistakes out of him then it would be the patriots um and but no i mean you
39:02 need to you need to figure out what is not working right now as far as taking the ball away and you
39:07 need to fix that very fast and i think that the inclusion of jc jackson in this this defense
39:13 certainly helps all right i have written down winning on first down and you know it's just it's
39:19 not going to be enough you got to go bigger you need to win the first half yeah and because you
39:23 look back at the game last year and the raiders get ahead early kyle dugger gets that pick six
39:27 in the third quarter just jump starts them to life like you're back in the game um that you
39:31 really shouldn't have been statistically you know we can go back on max numbers 13 to 31 112 yards
39:37 so you need to put this game on your terms because you cannot ground them into dust
39:41 drag this game into the buck if the raiders are off and running with an opening drive touchdown
39:45 or they're up 10 to nothing like the patriots you know three of their first opponents have been um
39:50 after their first two drives you need to win the first half or at worst going to halftime um with
39:55 with the time yeah i my my third key is just that mac jones needs to play within his limits like and
40:02 i i don't even think last week was him not playing within his limits because and that throw to tyra
40:07 matthew was just him doing something dumb quite often quite all quite honestly but against the
40:14 cowboys when he's trying to throw you know across the hat like across the field it's just he can't
40:21 do that he's not physically capable of doing that so he needs to play within his limits um and
40:27 obviously avoid turnovers like he had against the saints but he needs to avoid those risky throws
40:31 the audience cowboys as well they're trying to force the ball into tight windows or throwing
40:35 across the field it's just not his strength so he has to avoid it all right max crosby time
40:40 two matchups um max crosby versus vaderian low like and this is a matchup a mismatch up uh for
40:46 the patriots obviously where low is allowing pressure and about 15 of his past blocking
40:50 snaps horrendous picket you can't have that you want to have about a fifth of that for any offensive
40:54 tackle in the nfl and this is not as simple like we talked about actually here two weeks ago like
41:00 with michael parsons run at him go no huddle double team him chip him you need to do everything
41:06 he had a sack he had four tfls against the packers on monday night this is a relentless player and so
41:13 part of it is going to be scheming quick game part of it is going to be screens all the things i just
41:17 mentioned because you cannot afford to leave low out there one on one i don't know more than a
41:22 handful of times in this game and when you do you need to have something in the route concept
41:27 and the timing of the play to make sure that mac can get rid of the ball because crosby's going to
41:31 get there he's going to get in the backfield you just have to minimize the damage in a way that
41:35 honestly like mac did early against cowboys until the strip sack and everything fell apart
41:39 but crosby is going to keep coming in a way that you're not going to see really for many players
41:43 in the league where there are a lot of people like him but he he just it's not even like a white guy
41:47 cliche thing like he's not bringing his lunch pail he is just in a rare way type of relentless
41:53 yeah and i'm actually curious i mean obviously we would expect vaderian low to start this game but
41:59 i'm not sure if we've really gotten a good look at the offensive line that's true nation in practice
42:02 okay right tackle like right no no absolutely not trying to like like no i don't have a point here
42:07 uh but i i just want to bring up that like maybe we do see a different offensive line combination
42:12 and if michael wenu and if cole strange can start guard this week then maybe you see riley reef
42:17 start at right tackle just because what they've been doing out there hasn't worked so far but like
42:21 no matter who it is it's a mismatch for the raiders that they can exploit um i we talked
42:26 about a bunch but jc jackson devante adams that's a match that i'm watching and like we all like
42:31 we mentioned like there's going to be a lot of double teams i think you have to to give jc jackson
42:35 a lot of help but i mean if he can win that matchup even with just one turnover like if he lets up 70
42:41 yards but has an interception i still feel like that's kind of a win that's a win for jc jackson
42:45 even if you're letting up 80 90 whatever it is 100 yeah if you can get the interception if you
42:49 can flip the field at some point then that would be huge all right wild card what do you got
42:53 wild card for me so i'm not sure if i'm actually going to this game like not to not to make light
42:59 of this but like but my daughter this is the best part of the podcast yeah he's he's in the hospital
43:04 but she should be coming home soon so if she comes home on friday i'm probably not making it out to
43:08 las vegas if she's supposed to come home for the weekend i might not be making it to las vegas like
43:13 if she said to come home on monday or tuesday i'll probably go to las vegas but yeah that's my
43:17 wild card right now it's that like you are the one i think i'm going at this point but i really
43:22 have no idea i'm like 50 50 um yeah so that's that's that's what i'm facing right now um i can't
43:29 say it i i basically banned myself from talking about this because i explained many times that
43:33 i was missing the game on sunday for that reason i'm also missing this game on the road because of
43:38 another uh event uh but this time i am officiating that event is one of my closest friends i i don't
43:43 know how much longer i can be friends with them when they book these weddings i'll just say it
43:47 in football season i have another friend that just got engaged and they're tentatively looking
43:50 at november 2nd next year if that is not the bi-week i might be questionable for that wedding
43:55 uh but if i was going i would tell you how wonderful this freaking stadium is i still haven't
44:00 been this is it is insane the atmosphere um all the amenities the accessibility yes it looks like
44:07 the death star okay but if this was actually the death star in star wars i would have converted
44:12 from the valley into the empire in a second because i would live here it's an amazing stadium
44:18 so the ticket prices to fly out of logan are absolutely insane wherever you might live to
44:22 get to vegas for a game and especially a patriots game it might be worth it i have family friends
44:27 who did this last year and one of them was a raider fan um and they had a spectacular time
44:32 walking distance to the strip the stadium is unbelievable the food is cheap they even have
44:36 um what's the subway shop over here we always used to go or the capriotti capriotti capriotti's is
44:42 in this state which i thought was the local chain lo and behold we are getting the wildest wild
44:46 cards here getting the sub talk um but anyway if you have a chance go to elision stadium it is a
44:52 wonderful place and obviously las vegas doesn't suck either absolutely okay game pick what do you
44:56 got um i have the raiders winning this one i'm gonna go with like it's gonna be a low scoring
45:02 affair i would honestly say 13 10 maybe like like real low well the spread is three yeah raiders
45:11 minus three i like the under even though it's like 41 uh i mean it's hit two though yeah basically
45:19 the last three games i think i'd like to see the patriots score one touchdown before i predict them
45:23 scoring more than one touchdown um they didn't get into the red zone last week against the saints
45:29 right um no and then their only scoring opportunity was 48 yard miss by chad ryland so
45:36 i'm predicting one touchdown for the patriots i am as well yeah um but i have raiders 23 13
45:43 and this is you know i think the patriots can't grind this out i think you'll see a much cleaner
45:46 game okay when you go to fundamentals and the whole theme of the week is like abcs and stop
45:51 at the third letter um you know i i think they'll have a better chance of getting out of there with
45:56 any trouble so uh but yeah i tell they need to show i i wrote this two weeks ago like i don't
46:02 know how you could just blindly believe in the patriots as they are right now but i do think
46:06 it will be better i just can't predict the win anymore because i did last week and man the egg
46:09 is still dripping off my face so he is doug kyd i'm major callahan thank you again for listening
