00:02 - A student was out riding his mountain bike
00:05 and he sees what he thinks is a scarecrow.
00:09 - You're insulted in your soul
00:12 at what you see when you first come on something like that.
00:15 - This is a sign of rage, something very personal,
00:20 something very terrifying about that.
00:23 - Did he seem remorseful?
00:24 - Not at all.
00:25 Not at all.
00:29 - It was a gruesome discovery at this fence.
00:32 A gay man, barely alive tonight.
00:35 - I think we all recognized pieces of ourselves
00:38 in this story.
00:40 - At 1253 a.m. this morning, Matthew Shepard died.
00:44 - I was devastated by Matthew's death.
00:47 My soul ached.
00:49 - It reminded me how much hate there is out there.
00:52 - He asked you to stop.
00:54 - Oh, yeah.
00:54 - He kicked out.
00:58 - So, obviously, you don't like gay people.
01:01 - Matt's murder changed everything.
01:06 - Matt's death was a rallying point.
01:09 People were angry, viscerally angry
01:12 about what was happening.
01:13 - We must defeat hate.
01:15 - What happened to Matthew Shepard
01:16 is undeniably wicked and disgusting.
01:20 - This violence is commonplace.
01:22 That teaches our queer youth to be terrified.
01:26 But we need in this moment when it's hard
01:29 to get motivated to fight all over again,
01:32 to remember who this young man was,
01:34 who was so brutally murdered because he was gay.
