More than 2,400 people were killed in earthquakes in Afghanistan, the Taliban administration
00:06
said on Sunday, while 2,000 more have been injured in the deadliest tremors to rock the
00:12
mountainous country in years.
00:14
The Saturday quakes hit the west of the country, with one reaching a 6.3 magnitude, according
00:20
to the U.S. Geological Survey.
00:24
"Thirteen members of my family were injured and need urgent support," this area resident
00:30
said.
00:31
"Many more have been martyred, and in some places the entire family is dead.
00:35
We are so worried, and we need help."
00:37
Canan Saik, spokesman for the Ministry of Disasters, said 10 rescue teams have been
00:43
formed in addition to evacuation and rescue operations in the area.
00:48
He also pointed out a blood distribution process is going on, too, and water and shelter have
00:53
been provided for the affected people.
00:55
Some of them are sleeping outside, as the earthquakes destroyed more than 1,000 homes.
01:01
The natural disaster made an already challenging situation for the country even more so, according
01:07
to Arshad Malik, the country director for Save the Children in Afghanistan.
01:11
"We are all falling into IPC-3, which is food insecure area already because of the economic
01:20
situation and the drought.
01:22
So this is a crisis on top of another crisis which they were facing already.
01:27
The families need urgent support for now."
01:30
Another issue, the health care system, which is reliant almost entirely on foreign aid,
01:35
has faced crippling cuts in the two years since the Taliban took over, and much international
01:41
assistance which had formed the backbone of the economy was halted.
