Voice referendum enters final week

Millions of Australians have already voted in the 2023 referendum heading into the final week.

00:00 We're entering the final week of early voting. It's really exciting.

00:03 If you can't make it to a polling place on the 14th of October

00:07 this coming Saturday, well you've still got a whole week to cast your vote.

00:11 We've got about 550 early voting centres available and open to you.

00:15 We're probably expecting somewhere between five to six million votes cast

00:19 at early voting centres all up. It's hard to tell. We'll see where we

00:22 get to at the end of the week. On the Saturday itself we'll have about

00:25 8,000 venues open to the public so you can vote anywhere within your

00:29 state or territory on referendum day. If you're going to be interstate it's a

00:33 specific interstate voting centre. During the early voting period about 550

00:38 early voting centres all up and you can vote at any of them

00:41 across the nation. If you can't make it in person time is running out.

00:45 If you need a postal vote this Wednesday 6pm that's the deadline to apply for a

00:49 postal vote. Don't wait, do it now. If you are coming

00:52 on Saturday on referendum day, well fantastic.

00:55 You'll probably get that community atmosphere that Australia is famous for.

00:58 You might even get a democracy sausage or something from the cake store.

01:02 The voting instructions are really simple. You've just got to write either

01:05 yes or no on your ballot paper. That's it. We expect the vast majority

01:09 of Australians to follow those instructions.

01:11 Please, we're urging you, treat our staff with respect.

01:15 Remember that Australia's got a really proud history of peaceful

01:18 civil electoral events. Bring that attitude

01:22 to the polling place when you come. There's 550 early voting centres

01:25 available across the nation. We're urging local residents in particular to make

01:29 sure they know their voting options. Go to aec.gov.au. You can punch in your

01:34 postcode or your suburb and bring up the voting centre nearest to you.
