This car is nothing new.

The Super 20 was built a few years ago

to commemorate 20 years of the Miata.

It's appeared at numerous car shows,

but unlike most beauty queens, this thing actually works.

This is Mazda, after all, who has big ties to motorsports,

specifically because of the Miata.

This week on "Ignition," we're driving the Super 20

because it appears to be the perfect extension of the things

that make the Miata so much fun.

The Super 20's face looks like something out of an anime,

lower and wider thanks to those fender flares.

And its fog lights sort of look like fangs.

New suspension components are matched to 16-inch wheels

wrapped in R-Compound rubber.

Just look at that sidewall.

Underneath the hood is an engine built by Cosworth

to withstand boosts sent from a flying Miata supercharger kit.

And on top is a very bright roll bar.

Acceleration may not be the whole point of the Super 20,

but it's pretty good at it because we

have very sticky tires.

That means we can do a big clutch dump

to get it out of the hole.

Short gearing means you have to shift quite a bit,

but you'll hit 60 in 5.2 seconds.

And you'll go through pretty much all the gears to get there.

And the quarter mile arrives in 13.7 seconds

at 100.9 miles an hour.

For our 60 to 0 braking test, it took the Miata

For the figure 8 part of the Super 20 test,

we're going to take the top off, or we already

have taken the top off, because Miata, it's what you do.

The tires on this thing are wonderful.

There is so much grip.

And they just help add to the confidence in the chassis.

Your turn in speed is fabulous.

And you can just dance the car right on the limits

of the tire's adhesion.

I think I'm still entering this corner a little bit too slow.

Now, you can still have that kind of balance

with the grip of these tires.

But you can still do a lot of things

They transition to a slide very easily and very controllably.

And the added torque means you don't

will help this car's lap time.

The braking performance, again, because of these tires

And the speed you can carry is just excellent.

Now, as the Super 20 is a car built for a car show,

there are a number of cosmetic upgrades.

That's why this roll cage or roll bar behind us is orange.

That's why the interior looks a little bit different.

But honestly, we don't care about that.

We care about how it drives.

And in a word, I'd have to describe it as wonderful.

I always try to compare cars to music, being a big music nerd.

And I've come to it with this.

There are some cars that go down the road in a very

dissonant fashion, like the Evolution, like the GT-R.

They're just in your face.

They're kind of like punk rock in that regard.

And then there's cars that go down the road

with a certain harmony and melody, like the Cayman

and like the Miata in general.

And this Super 20 just further exemplifies

the traits of that harmony.

It's a wonderful, wonderful driving car.

This car is not built for production.

It's not slated to be sold.

It's made to be an example of what you can do with a Miata.

And that's an interesting thing, because whenever

I drive this car, I always come back to the same thought.

And that is, if I had a Miata, it'd probably

end up very similar to this, maybe

without that exhaust noise.

But the rest of the car, the fundamentals of this car

are very nice.

And the upgrades that they've given to this car only

strengthen the fundamentals of it.

We have a supercharger on a built engine, not one that has

any difference in displacement, but just a couple things

change to, I guess, enhance durability.

But the beautiful thing about superchargers

is they aren't built to be sold.

is they aren't in your face, like some of the crazy turbos

are.

You don't hear whine.

You don't get a sense that there's

any extra power being added.

It just feels like you have a bigger engine

without many of the downsides of having a bigger engine.

And we're not working with a lot of horsepower, 225,

250 horsepower is about what this is making.

And that may seem laughable on paper.

But then you realize it's in a car that

weighs 2,600 pounds around there.

And that makes for a very enjoyable driving experience.

The power doesn't overwhelm the chassis.

But it is enough to give you very good acceleration.

The gearing is also ridiculously short.

I'm spending most of the time driving on this road in fifth,

whereas in most high power, high torque cars,

you're in third or fourth gear.

But fortunately, the shifter, the clutch,

works so beautifully.

The tack only seems to drop a handful of revs on each shift.

And you can shift so fast, it almost

sounds like you're driving a sequential gearbox.

Now, much of this car's performance

we can attribute to these tires, which

are very big and very sticky.

I love the amount of sidewall you have on these tires.

But they are for competition use only.

Sure, they have tread blocks and whatnot.

But if you go to Tire Racks' website

and look at the second sentence, it

says, "These tires are not appropriate for highway use."

That said, the level of grip that they give to this car

is simply insane.

You can wring this car around its neck through every corner.

You can charge into corners way faster

than you have any right to.

But when you back off from the limit performance,

when you drive at a comfortable pace,

this car is still extremely enjoyable.

Because it has, again, those fundamentals

of a good driving car--

low weight, good chassis balance,

communicative steering, pedals.

It's a beautiful, beautiful driving car.

The Super 20 simply is a delightful car.

The parts Mazda has added amplify the joy

you get from sitting behind the wheel.

And they do so without diminishing

the rest of the car.

You can easily justify what little drivability sacrifices

exist by considering the hilarious performance

and driving experience.

It's these qualities that make us

hopeful that Mazda might build something
