00:00 Welcome to Sunday Morning Quarterback with Jay Stockwell and Bob Frady.
00:06 UV, how are you, man?
00:09 You know, Stockwell, I got a new camera for my phone, for my setup, and it's an HD camera,
00:18 and I think it was a mistake.
00:20 It's like, I think I need to go back to-
00:22 Wait, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:24 You're the most beautiful man in the world, so the high definition is even better.
00:28 It's even better.
00:29 That's true.
00:30 Well, that's very true, but still, I do need like a low- I do need like a no-D camera.
00:36 It's like, double Ds are good for some things, cameras aren't one of them.
00:41 This is a G-rated podcast.
00:43 We've decided that.
00:44 You can't even make-
00:45 I thought it was PG-13.
00:46 Come on, it's Nebraska football.
00:47 You can't even make alphanumeric.
00:50 You can't even make alphanumeric.
00:51 Well, that is PG-13.
00:52 PG-13.
00:53 Yeah, that's PG-13.
00:54 So, yeah.
00:55 And my stuff just got here today from California, so-
01:00 Oh, how's it going?
01:01 I'm exhausted.
01:02 I just dragged it all in the house.
01:06 But the most impressive part is that my wife helped me in three-inch heels and a skirt.
01:10 I'm like, she's a boomer.
01:12 So, yeah, she's awesome.
01:15 So there's actually places to sit and stuff now?
01:19 There's one more place to sit.
01:20 We cut a chair.
01:21 Yeah, one more.
01:22 The big question is, when is the bar going to be set up in the basement?
01:28 When is the podcast studio going to be set up?
01:31 The carpet rolls in sometime later this week.
01:34 After that, all bets are off.
01:36 But we did get some booze to stock it with, which is lovely.
01:39 All right.
01:40 So wait a minute.
01:41 So wait, hold on.
01:42 So there's going to be carpeting in the basement?
01:44 Is that what we're saying?
01:45 Yeah.
01:46 Yeah.
01:47 So when you spill stuff, you'll be able to circle and say, "Jay spilled stuff here."
01:50 So to our friends in the listening audience, I got a couple of little couches for our outside
01:55 room, indoor/outdoor room, which you can't see, it's behind that pole.
01:58 But Jay's wife said, "Yeah, yeah, Jay can come over and spill something on it, and then
02:03 we'll flip the couch over, flip the cushion over, spill on that side too."
02:07 Well, part one's already done.
02:08 So luckily, it was clear liquor.
02:11 There's no grape juice or any cuts involved.
02:14 It was straight white spirits and club soda.
02:18 So luckily, we don't notice it too much, but there you go.
02:23 Hey, before we start on the pregame for Illinois, I got a very exciting announcement.
02:29 We're taping on Thursday an interview with Tim Miles.
02:36 We're doing it just to accommodate his schedule.
02:38 He's got recruits and basketball players coming into San Jose State where he works.
02:43 Why are you giving away our future?
02:46 You got to have a little tea, you got to have a little tea.
02:49 It's a little teaser.
02:50 You should be here in three episodes from now.
02:53 No, every episode's good.
02:56 It's this weekend, it's this weekend, so I'm excited about that.
02:59 He was Mountain West Coach of the Year last year.
03:02 Enough about that, we got a prediction to get to.
03:06 We'll talk about him on Thursday.
03:09 Very good.
03:10 I don't know if you understand the relationship.
03:14 Tim and I have been good friends over his time at Nebraska.
03:16 I don't understand any of your relationships.
03:18 I barely understand your relationship with me.
03:23 It's taken me 20 years to figure that out.
03:26 Your relationships with other people, I'm like, "Oh, all right, you know Jay, I know
03:29 Jay too.
03:30 All right, here we go.
03:31 We're all in the pool."
03:32 So I don't know how you know them, I don't know where you know them from.
03:36 All I know is, "Hey, they just showed up."
03:38 It's like I told you, you're like a center of gravity.
03:41 Things are just attracted to you and all of a sudden there's these people.
03:43 Where the hell did that come from?
03:46 All right, well this is going to be fun this weekend.
03:48 I'm looking forward to that.
03:50 All right, so Illinois, boy, what an important game for the Huskers and for our own predictions,
03:57 Yubi.
03:58 Okay, stop right there.
03:59 Stop right there.
04:00 What?
04:01 It's not that important.
04:02 It's not that important.
04:03 Yes, it is.
04:04 It is.
04:05 Why is it?
04:06 Why?
04:07 Because it's a college football game.
04:08 We're old men for crying out loud.
04:10 What does it matter?
04:11 They win, they win, they lose, they lose.
04:12 We're still going to root for them.
04:13 We're not going to hang up the sweaters.
04:14 We're going to take a program.
04:15 For the program it's important.
04:16 Oh, for the program.
04:17 Not for the program.
04:18 It's important.
04:19 It's important, but as we know, it's a rebuilding year.
04:25 If you watched the last podcast, you know that rebuilds sometimes take longer than you
04:29 expect.
04:30 I know this.
04:31 Yes.
04:32 And so it would be lovely if they won.
04:35 Excuse me, when they win.
04:37 Yeah, yeah.
04:39 Well, it's far from certain, let me just put it that way, because first of all, it's on
04:46 the road.
04:47 Illinois has been very, very tough.
04:50 We've lost some games there the past several trips in there.
04:53 Brett Bollema is a baller coach.
04:56 Now they lost a lot of people last year.
04:58 They were like the big upstart last year and they've lost a lot of players.
05:02 But the stats, you look at the Husker Max stats, UB, and it's a pretty even ball game.
05:07 I think they've got the advantage on offense.
05:10 We've got the advantage on defense.
05:12 Is it in Stockwell?
05:15 I think that you and I might have the advantage on offense right now.
05:19 Holy cow.
05:23 But I kind of like Matt Ruhl's comments after the game.
05:26 He's starting to really challenge these guys.
05:28 It wasn't like calling the players out.
05:30 He made it a point to say that.
05:31 He wasn't.
05:32 But he's like, guys, you got to show up.
05:34 We've got some guys that can wreck games and we just haven't done it yet.
05:38 So here's an opportunity.
05:40 I'm not calling anybody out.
05:42 But for those of you in the uniform, okay.
05:47 Can narrow this down a little bit.
05:50 So I think it's going to be, I think this one's going to be a low scoring affair.
05:55 We're favored by three and a half points.
05:57 Elveron is 44.
06:00 I predicted that they'd win this game.
06:05 I think Illinois had a tough time at Purdue.
06:07 But they're going to be motivated at home to play really, really well.
06:10 But I think it's going to be like 21-17 for the Huskers.
06:17 I think it's going to be, I think our defense really needs to step up here and kind of win
06:22 this game.
06:23 And you know, Heidrich's got to run the ball around the end.
06:26 And that was the most disappointing thing about the Michigan game was his inability
06:31 to turn the corner, which put us in the spread offense.
06:35 We focus on the future.
06:36 What's done is done.
06:38 So it's like, listen, it's Friday night in Illinois, in Champaign, Illinois.
06:44 People are going to be zonked out of their minds.
06:45 I'll be surprised if the place is half full.
06:48 So it's like, come on.
06:50 It's not going to be that big of a way advantage.
06:54 And I think there'll be a lot of Nebraska people there because, you know, they travel
06:59 well.
07:00 So we'll see.
07:01 We'll see.
07:02 I think it's going to be a very loud red crowd.
07:04 And I encourage anyone who has gotten a shot out of Memorial Stadium tickets, go to Champaign.
07:10 It's not that far.
07:12 It's like an eight hour drive.
07:13 And go show them what the Husker fans are made of.
07:17 And thank them on the way out.
07:18 So what's, what is your statistical rundown, UV?
07:22 What are you thinking about this game?
07:24 I think my, my, my temptation is to say that the final score will be three to two with
07:30 a bun single in the bottom of the ninth to win the game.
07:36 I think, I think each team will score two touchdowns, one of which will be by accident.
07:43 And the field goal kicker will come through.
07:45 I think it's 20 to 14.
07:47 Big red.
07:48 All right.
07:50 So we're both calling a big red win 20 to 14 for you, be 2117 for me, which mine doesn't
07:58 involve a field goal because our field goal kicker, unfortunately, has been a little bit
08:01 disappointing.
08:02 But we're both, we're both calling victory here and it's going to be led by our defense.
08:08 I think Ira is going to have a good game.
08:10 I don't think we're going to turn the ball over.
08:11 I think special teams will be good.
08:14 And I think it's going to be low penalties like it, like it's been trending.
08:17 So here we go.
08:20 Go big red.
08:21 What do you think?
08:22 I think that that is an excellent call.
08:25 Have you ever bid to the University of Illinois?
08:28 No I have not.
08:29 I have not either.
08:30 And you know what?
08:31 There's a reason for that.
08:32 Like who the hell wants to go there?
08:33 Oh, you know, you know, it was a big, big University of Illinois.
08:40 I know a couple of guys, John Giuliani for one former, my former boss of Catalina.
08:45 He's a Rudy's brother.
08:46 I think he's chairman of Epsilon now.
08:53 So he's a, he's a big cheese in the, in our space.
08:57 Chris Michael, former Navy guy, big photographer now for the national.
09:01 Are any of them, are any of them doing podcasts about the University of Illinois football
09:09 team?
09:10 I don't know.
09:11 No, I don't know.
09:12 I don't know.
09:13 I don't know whether they're smarter than us or they're not as big of fans as we are
09:16 or both or both.
09:18 A, B or C. All of these can be true.
09:23 So I'm looking forward to it.
09:25 Friday night game.
09:26 I got, Matt Rule got a little fired up after that game, that last game.
09:30 He laid it out there.
09:31 That's pretty aggressive for a coach to do that in his first year.
09:34 So let's hope it has a positive impact.
09:37 And I think all the way back to our first podcast where he walked into the stadium in
09:41 Minnesota with that look on his face.
09:44 And I thought, we thought maybe it was focused and maybe it was, Oh my gosh, this team, what
09:48 are we going to do?
09:49 So maybe he was just panicked and hit it differently.
09:53 We'll find out a lot this weekend.
09:54 We'll find out which bowl game they're going to, whether it's the car quest, you know,
09:58 Pep Boys bowl or, or the, or the roofing.com little sisters of the poor bowl or whenever
10:06 they're calling them now, you know, the, the, the, the, I don't know, the, uh, the, the
10:12 dog bowl, the toilet bowl.
10:13 I don't know which bowl we're going to, but we're going to a bowl.
10:16 Let's just talk.
10:17 Let's just talk for a second.
10:19 If, if both of our, if our, uh, prediction comes true, this could bode well for the next
10:27 three weeks.
10:28 Okay.
10:29 So this would put us at 500, three and three, right?
10:32 If we, if you just said to any Nebraska fan at the beginning of the season that the team
10:37 will be 500 after six games, they'd have been like, Oh, that's not too bad.
10:42 So, you know, and, and then, and when we got coming up here in Northwestern Purdue and
10:46 Michigan state, we could be bowl eligible in a month.
10:50 Okay.
10:51 You know what?
10:52 Let's not, let's not look too far ahead.
10:54 You're the one who says, don't get too far over your ski tips.
10:57 Look at you.
10:58 You're at Mount ski like six weeks from now.
11:00 Look at me, I'm six weeks ahead of it.
11:02 No, no, no.
11:03 Focus on the moment.
11:04 Enjoy the moment.
11:05 Enjoy the moment.
11:06 The Nebraska backs are against the wall.
11:09 It's like a late, you know what it is?
11:11 It's like a late planting season.
11:13 That's all it is.
11:14 We had a little unexpected rain and thunder.
11:15 The fields are a little marshy.
11:17 Now it's time to plant, run the ball, get to a bowl, win the game against Illinois.
11:23 I keep calling, I keep wanting to call the university of Chicago, which is insulting
11:27 to the university of Chicago, but it's not the university of Illinois.
11:32 These guys are tough.
11:34 These guys are tough on their own field.
11:36 I've seen it so many times.
11:39 What's their nickname?
11:40 The fighting Illini?
11:41 Yeah, I'm not sure what that is.
11:42 What is that?
11:43 University of Illinois, the Illini.
11:46 It's like the Nebraska.
11:48 We'd be like the brawling Nebraska if we followed the same pattern.
11:52 What is the Illini?
11:53 I guess it's the plural of Illinois.
11:56 I don't know.
11:57 It's the number of Illinois.
11:58 Who knows?
11:59 Who knows what it is?
12:00 It's like, and listen, we're Nebraska fans.
12:01 We're supposed to be nice.
12:02 We're not supposed to cast as Persians.
12:03 We've got enough of Persians to live with on our own, but fighting Illini, you couldn't
12:08 come up with something better than that?
12:10 Even the Saluki is a better name than fighting Illini.
12:15 Originally Illini was a term used to refer to a group of native American tribes that
12:19 lived in the Mississippi River Valley.
12:21 A group of roughly 12 or 13 tribes occupied land in what is now Iowa, Missouri, and Arkansas.
12:28 Words Illinois and Illini were the result of French explorers in the area attempting
12:33 to spell the native word for the group of tribes, Illinwek.
12:36 Even worse.
12:38 Even worse.
12:40 Now they're culturally inappropriate.
12:43 They're culturally inappropriate.
12:47 The University of Illinois, inappropriates.
12:49 So let's cancel them on Friday night, settle this once and for all, Cornhuskers, and then
12:54 we'll rename them to something more fitting.
12:56 The University of Illinois, not Chicago's.
12:59 Something like that.
13:00 All right.
13:01 Well, that's it.
13:02 So 21, 17 victory from Commander Stockwell and UB is going with 2014, both claiming a
13:11 victory 500.
13:12 Oh, and by the way, subscribe.
13:14 YouTube, iTunes, Spotify, all that.
13:16 So good luck, Huskers.
13:18 Go Big Red!
13:23 Go Big Red.
