00:03 Welcome to Mojo Plays and today we are ignoring Peter Parker and looking at 10 of the best

00:08 and a few of the worst playable side characters in Spider-Man games.

00:12 For this list we'll be looking at characters who appear in any and all Spider-Man games

00:17 that players have the opportunity to control.

00:19 As long as the character isn't the masked web slinger we'll be talking about them.

00:24 I wanted to include Bombastic Bagman but my boss said he was still technically Spider-Man

00:28 and I said you're technically Spider-Man.

00:31 Balls in his court now.

00:53 It's a difficult task to come through as a fun and interesting playable character when

00:58 your gameplay style couldn't be more opposite from the gameplay style people bought the

01:03 Swinging, punching, jumping, kicking, you know, fun stuff.

01:08 Mary Jane popped up a few times throughout 2018's Spider-Man and with all due respect

01:13 to the beloved redhead, she was pretty boring.

01:17 Acting as a stealth character in her starring moments, the stealth was neither fine-tuned

01:21 or well designed.

01:23 Slowing down for a moment would have been digestible for players if Insomniac had made

01:27 these sections even 25% less boring.

01:31 Mary Jane we love you but move out of the way, we've got web to sling.

01:46 Sub-Mariner

01:47 Spider-Man the video game was an incredibly underrated 4 player arcade game which allowed

01:53 players single or multiplayer to take control of the web slinger or alternatively 3 of his

01:58 dear friends.

01:59 One of these controllable characters was Sub-Mariner.

02:03 Sub-Mariner had much the same moveset as Spider-Man with the game functioning like Double Dragon

02:07 as a side-scrolling beat-em-up.

02:09 His individual abilities included his hydro-electric blast which was both his special ability and

02:14 ranged attack during the ranged gameplay.

02:17 Short ranged but stronger, Sub-Mariner was a great option to pick up if you weren't fast

02:22 enough to click Spider-Man.

02:23 And who doesn't want to watch that body swing punches.

02:34 Miles Morales

02:35 We're jumping back to the 2018 Insomniac game Spider-Man for the last time I swear, to discuss

02:45 the other stealthy playable side character, Miles Morales.

02:49 Of course, Miles eventually became Spider-Man himself in the much beloved follow up entry

02:54 Spider-Man Miles Morales but in 2018's game, he was simply just Miles, which actually made

03:00 him a lot more fun to drive than Mary Jane.

03:03 Regardless of the gameplay, everybody playing who had even a basic knowledge of Spider-Man

03:08 knew that the story we were following was leading somewhere good.

03:12 We never got Peter's origin story so living out Miles in the events of this brilliant

03:16 game was actually lots of fun, even if we were slogging through the actual gameplay

03:21 sections.

03:33 Wolverine

03:34 The often forgotten SNES title Spider-Man and the X-Men in Arcade's Revenge had the

03:39 player moving through cleverly designed levels for characters like Spider-Man obviously,

03:44 Storm, Gambit, Cyclops and Wolverine.

03:48 Completing two levels for each character except Spider-Man who had an extra, meant that the

03:52 player was forced to familiarise themselves with all characters featured.

03:57 Wolverine stood out as the only character who didn't attack at range, meaning the player

04:01 got the opportunity to get in close.

04:03 This added and subtracted a layer of stress as the player couldn't stand back in safety

04:08 but also didn't have to worry about their aim.

04:11 Wolverine was a breath of fresh air and a fun take on a beloved character.

04:19 Green Goblin

04:20 Spider-Man 2002 on the PS2 was a beloved classic.

04:28 Retroactively it isn't nearly as good as the second entry but before we knew what was to

04:32 come it was an absolute blast.

04:35 The game had a whole handful of cheats that allowed you to play as various characters

04:38 including Mary Jane, Shocker and the beloved fan favourite, Scientist.

04:44 All of these characters however spoke with Peter's voice and behaved exactly as Spider-Man

04:49 did.

04:50 If the player managed to beat the game in hero difficulty, they would unlock a totally

04:54 original character in the form of Harry Osborn as the Green Goblin.

04:59 Complete with his own story, albeit using the same levels, his own dialogue and his

05:03 own abilities, this character added post-game content that was substantial and lots of fun.

05:15 Captain America

05:16 The amazing Spider-Man and Captain America in Doctor Doom's Revenge, as gruelling to

05:20 say as it is to play.

05:21 I'm giving it a hard time but in its defence, it did come out in 1989.

05:26 Stepping into the role of the web-slinger back in the 80s would have been an absolute

05:29 blast for young gamers, but this one also allowed players to take control of the much

05:34 loved Captain America, complete with strong punches and even stronger shield throws.

05:39 It was nothing more than a basic fighting game with players taking on characters one

05:43 at a time, but it was enjoyable for players willing to wrap their head around the enemy's

05:47 movesets.

05:48 Venom

05:49 Another SNES title that featured Spider-Man was Spider-Man and Venom Maximum Carnage,

06:02 and Maximum Carnage was correct.

06:05 The gameplay was loads of fun, it featured hundreds of enemies and villains, and allowed

06:09 the players to not only play as Spider-Man, but should they be feeling a little bit evil,

06:14 Venom as well.

06:16 The movesets were much the same, with slight differences to grapples and special attacks

06:20 being in Venom's favour, as they were either more effective or just way cooler.

06:25 It's hard to not want to select the web-crawler when the opportunity presents itself, but

06:30 we implore you to have one crack at the lethal protector and see if you don't love it.

06:41 Hawkeye

06:43 We're back with the arcade entry to the Spider-Man world, Spider-Man the video game.

06:48 Although Sub-Mariner is a great side character option, there is one more in this game that

06:54 is slightly more fun, and that is Hawkeye.

06:57 Hawkeye shares some core similarities with Spider-Man that make the game function to

07:01 his advantage.

07:02 Armed with a bow, he can also implement ranged attacks that have no distance limit, allowing

07:07 him to remain in safety when taking on big bosses like Giant Venom.

07:12 His controls are identical to Spider-Man, and should the player lose out on grabbing

07:16 Spider-Man, he is the next best option.

07:22 Black Cat

07:31 Spider-Man Friend or Foe is a PS2 action adventure platformer and beat-em-up that allowed friends

07:37 to enjoy a couch co-op Spider-Man adventure.

07:40 Featuring a full roster of playable characters like Harry Osborn, Venom, Doctor Octopus and

07:46 Rhino, the second player had a plethora of choices.

07:50 It was actually my little sister who helped me discover the joy that could come out of

07:54 playing as Black Cat, as her and the rest of the internet seem to agree, if you can't

07:59 be Spidey, be Black Cat.

08:01 Her grapple abilities are identical to Spider-Man, with her charged abilities being even better,

08:07 which also invalidates a lot of the enemy attacks, making her the perfect ally for a

08:12 smooth unbeatable run of this game.

08:15 Will you two just get together already?

08:18 Venom

08:19 I know it seems unfair to include Venom more than once, but cut us some slack, Venom in

08:29 Ultimate Spider-Man is very, very sick.

08:33 As Spider-Man gracefully navigated the skies with acrobatic moves, Venom displayed a more

08:39 brute and less elegant style, causing destruction to the sidewalk with his massive weight.

08:44 The gameplay offered a unique twist granting players complete control over the symbiote,

08:50 allowing them to unleash its power on enemies and formidable bosses.

08:54 He was also able to do another, surprisingly graphic thing, which was to consume citizens

08:59 of New York to gain health.

09:02 Yep, eat em up like little New York chippies.
