00:00 >> Gary, you brought me back to
00:02 "The bachelor."
00:03 I haven't watched in a while
00:04 because I feel like you were
00:05 there for the right reason.
00:07 How does it feel to be the
00:08 golden bachelor?
00:09 >> It's sensational.
00:11 It's obviously the opportunity
00:13 of a lifetime.
00:14 It's just great fun, too.
00:16 >> First episode dropped.
00:18 It was sensational.
00:20 What was it like for you
00:21 watching it back?
00:22 >> Well, some of it, you know, I
00:24 don't even remember.
00:25 I was so excited that night.
00:27 I was thrilled about the women
00:28 getting out of the limo.
00:29 There are moments in there that
00:30 I go, oh, yeah, now I remember
00:32 that.
00:33 But I didn't remember all of it.
00:34 >> Was there anything cringy
00:35 watching it back that you were
00:36 like, oh, my gosh, oh, my gosh?
00:39 >> I would say no.
00:40 I was okay with everything that
00:42 happened.
00:43 You know, I remember trying to
00:45 always be genuine, to be myself,
00:48 and so the actions I took based
00:51 on that, I own.
00:53 I live with it.
00:54 >> Were you surprised by all the
00:56 women that you thought, wow,
00:57 they could be a good fit for
00:58 you?
00:59 There was one cute one after the
01:00 next, Gary.
01:01 >> I was surprised by that.
01:03 And as a group, they were
01:04 awesome.
01:05 They so represent our
01:06 generation.
01:08 You know, beautiful, talented,
01:10 poised, confident.
01:12 They were so nice to be around.
01:14 >> Are you on social media now
01:15 after all this?
01:16 What's great is you got your
01:17 social security.
01:18 Now do we need the social media?
01:19 Do we got to get that in check?
01:21 >> Sort of backwards, isn't it?
01:23 But, yes, I'm not any good at
01:24 it.
01:25 I can say, yes, I have an
01:26 Instagram account, but I'm not
01:27 good at it.
01:28 I don't have a Facebook or
01:29 Instagram account, but
01:30 navigating it is a little
01:31 different.
01:32 >> Your granddaughters, I heard,
01:34 said no kissing night one.
01:37 >> I failed, didn't I?
01:38 >> You failed.
01:39 >> Yeah, but I'm happy I failed.
01:41 >> Yes.
01:42 >> Yeah.
01:43 It wasn't like I was failing 22
01:45 times.
01:46 I think I only failed twice.
01:48 So, yeah, I'm happy with that.
01:50 >> Was it weird?
01:51 Did they say anything to you
01:52 after the show aired?
01:53 Like, oh, granddad, we told you
01:54 not to do that?
01:55 >> They were gracious about it.
01:57 You know, I got a little side
01:59 eye from my youngest
02:00 granddaughter.
02:01 But other than that, they were
02:03 okay.
02:04 >> They were so cute with it.
02:05 What did they think about
02:06 watching you get emotional?
02:07 Because that was sort of my
02:08 favorite part of it, which
02:09 brought it all home.
02:11 >> So they've seen that a number
02:13 of times.
02:14 You know, when I talk about
02:15 Tony's passing or, you know,
02:18 topics related to that, they've
02:20 seen me do that a number of
02:21 times.
02:22 So it's not new to them.
02:24 But actually, you know, I found
02:26 that that happens more and more
02:28 as I've gotten older.
02:30 You know, I don't know whether
02:31 it's specifically when Tony
02:33 passed away that brought it
02:34 about or just getting older.
02:36 But it happens more and more.
02:37 >> I love that.
02:38 That's called wisdom, it all
02:40 comes out.
02:41 >> All right.
02:42 >> Growth.
02:43 Did you and Tony watch the show
02:44 together?
02:45 Did you ever watch "The
02:46 bachelor" or "Bachelorette"
02:47 together?
02:48 >> You know, back in that era,
02:50 we probably did.
02:51 But I don't specifically
02:52 remember either of us getting
02:53 on it.
02:54 You know, the family members
02:55 that really got me going on it
02:57 were my daughters, you know,
02:58 later on.
02:59 So I don't really remember us
03:01 watching it much.
03:02 >> What would she think about
03:04 you doing this?
03:05 Would she see the humor in all
03:06 of this and kind of the beauty
03:07 of it, too?
03:08 >> She would bust my chops.
03:10 She would absolutely be busting
03:12 on me bad.
03:13 But, you know, we had
03:15 conversations before she passed
03:16 away about wishing the other
03:18 happiness after one of us was
03:20 gone.
03:21 And for several years after she
03:22 passed, I didn't really hold
03:24 those conversations dearly.
03:26 And as time went by, you know, I
03:28 got more and more comfortable
03:29 with it.
03:30 So when the "Golden bachelor"
03:32 thing became an opportunity, I
03:34 was really on the threshold of
03:37 really kind of branching out and
03:39 doing much better than I had.
03:41 >> It's so beautiful, which is
03:42 why I think a lot of people are
03:43 going to really love this
03:45 incarnation of "The bachelor,"
03:47 "The golden bachelor."
03:48 Let's get to some bombshells,
03:49 Gary.
03:50 Okay.
03:51 The walking out of the limos are
03:52 always some of the best ones.
03:54 What did you think when Teresa
03:55 came out with her birthday suit?
03:57 >> Yeah, that one is -- that's
03:59 burned into my memory because
04:01 I'm trying to be a gentleman,
04:02 right?
04:03 And so she --
04:04 >> I was so nervous.
04:05 >> She does this thing, and I
04:06 literally am trying to not look
04:08 at her below the chin.
04:09 And it's like I can't help it.
04:11 It's like, okay, what's actually
04:12 there?
04:13 So, yeah, that one made me
04:14 really nervous.
04:15 >> And the way she went to untie
04:16 it, so at first I was like,
04:17 "Don't do it, don't do it."
04:18 And then she did it, and we
04:19 can't see as the audience,
04:20 and then thank goodness it was a
04:21 joke.
04:22 >> Yeah, yeah.
04:23 >> I was so nervous.
04:24 April with the chicken dance,
04:26 and then she's popping her
04:27 behind.
04:28 >> Yeah.
04:29 She always brought energy to
04:30 every scene she was in.
04:32 So the very first time set the
04:34 stage for her to do things later
04:36 on in the show.
04:37 >> It was really funny.
04:38 >> It was.
04:39 >> Susan, saying she had shown
04:41 you her heels and saying she's
04:43 comfort -- I don't even want to
04:44 say it.
04:45 She's comfortable with six
04:46 inches on her heels.
04:47 >> Exactly.
04:48 >> But it was a -- it was a
04:49 naughty -- a wink and a wave.
04:51 >> Mm-hmm.
04:52 >> Yeah, that reference really
04:54 caught me off guard.
04:55 And, you know, that night I
04:56 remember her saying it, I'm
04:58 going, "Okay, that was soft
04:59 enough.
05:00 Maybe the cameras and the mics
05:01 didn't pick it up."
05:02 Oh, yeah, they totally did.
05:04 >> You're so wholesome and
05:05 sweet.
05:06 Were there any other moments
05:07 that you're like, "Oh, gosh,
05:08 oh, there's the one where the
05:09 lady was dropping the F-bomb the
05:10 whole time."
05:11 >> Oh, yeah, that one --
05:12 >> That was good.
05:13 I was leaning in, like, "Is
05:14 that what she's saying?"
05:15 >> Yeah.
05:16 I mean, it was awkward for me
05:18 because I didn't know whether I
05:19 wanted to look around and say,
05:21 "Okay, cut," you know, "Stop,"
05:23 or, "Okay, we're going to go
05:25 with this."
05:26 And I think she did it about
05:27 twice before I joined in.
05:29 >> You were great.
05:30 It was -- the whole thing is set
05:32 up to be awkward, and you
05:33 handled it so perfectly up
05:35 there.
05:36 And I think the best reason -- I
05:38 think that my favorite reason,
05:39 as they always say, is the
05:40 person there for the right
05:41 reason, and you are there for
05:43 the right reason.
05:44 >> Oh, absolutely.
05:45 I mean, I think that's the
05:46 best reason.
05:47 >> Oh, absolutely.
05:48 I mean, I looked forward to the
05:50 whole journey right from the
05:52 moment I committed to it,
05:54 thinking, "You know, I'm tired
05:56 of being alone.
05:57 I don't want to be by myself
05:58 anymore.
05:59 I want to have that partner for
06:01 whatever activity and the
06:02 partner that just is the best
06:04 company when you lay down at
06:06 night and you have
06:07 conversation."
06:08 And so I was committed to that
06:10 journey.
06:11 I was 100% in.
06:12 >> Oh, I can't wait to see.
06:14 I'm checking you out to see if
06:15 you're going to be there.
06:16 >> I'm going to be there.
06:17 >> I'm going to be there.
06:18 >> I'm going to be there.
06:19 >> I'm going to be there.
06:20 >> I'm going to be there.
06:21 >> I'm going to be there.
06:22 >> I'm going to be there.
06:23 >> I'm going to be there.
06:24 >> I'm going to be there.
06:25 >> I'm going to be there.
06:26 >> I'm going to be there.
06:27 >> I'm going to be there.
06:28 >> I'm going to be there.
06:29 >> I'm going to be there.
06:30 >> I'm going to be there.
06:31 >> I'm going to be there.
06:32 >> I'm going to be there.
06:33 >> I'm going to be there.
06:34 >> I'm going to be there.
06:35 >> I'm going to be there.
06:36 >> I'm going to be there.
06:37 >> I'm going to be there.
06:38 >> I'm going to be there.
06:39 >> I'm going to be there.
06:40 >> I'm going to be there.
06:41 >> I'm going to be there.
06:42 >> I'm going to be there.
06:43 >> I'm going to be there.
06:44 >> I'm going to be there.
06:45 >> I'm going to be there.
06:46 >> I'm going to be there.
06:47 >> I'm going to be there.
06:48 >> I'm going to be there.
06:49 >> I'm going to be there.
06:50 >> I'm going to be there.
06:51 >> I'm going to be there.
06:52 >> I'm going to be there.
06:53 >> I'm going to be there.
06:54 >> I'm going to be there.
06:55 >> I'm going to be there.
06:56 >> I'm going to be there.
06:57 >> I'm going to be there.
06:58 >> I'm going to be there.
06:59 >> I'm going to be there.
07:00 >> I'm going to be there.
07:01 >> I'm going to be there.
07:02 >> I'm going to be there.
07:03 >> I'm going to be there.
07:04 >> I'm going to be there.
07:05 >> I'm going to be there.
07:06 >> I'm going to be there.
07:07 >> I'm going to be there.
07:08 >> I'm going to be there.
07:09 >> I'm going to be there.
07:10 >> I'm going to be there.
07:11 >> I'm going to be there.
07:12 >> I'm going to be there.
07:13 >> I'm going to be there.
07:14 >> I'm going to be there.
07:15 >> I'm going to be there.
07:16 >> I'm going to be there.
07:17 >> I'm going to be there.
07:18 >> I'm going to be there.
07:19 >> I'm going to be there.
07:20 >> I'm going to be there.
07:21 >> I'm going to be there.
07:22 >> I'm going to be there.
07:23 >> I'm going to be there.
07:24 >> I'm going to be there.
07:25 >> I'm going to be there.
07:26 >> I'm going to be there.
07:27 >> I'm going to be there.
07:28 >> I'm going to be there.
07:29 >> I'm going to be there.
07:30 >> I'm going to be there.
07:31 >> I'm going to be there.
07:32 >> I'm going to be there.
07:33 >> I'm going to be there.
07:34 >> I'm going to be there.
07:35 >> I'm going to be there.
07:36 >> I'm going to be there.
07:37 >> I'm going to be there.
07:38 >> I'm going to be there.
07:39 >> I'm going to be there.
07:40 >> I'm going to be there.
07:41 >> I'm going to be there.
07:42 >> I'm going to be there.
07:44 >> I'm going to be there.
07:45 >> I'm going to be there.
07:46 >> I'm going to be there.
07:47 >> I'm going to be there.
07:48 >> I'm going to be there.
07:49 >> I'm going to be there.
07:50 >> I'm going to be there.
07:51 >> I'm going to be there.
07:52 >> I'm going to be there.
07:53 >> I'm going to be there.
07:54 >> I'm going to be there.
07:55 >> I'm going to be there.
07:56 >> I'm going to be there.
07:57 >> I'm going to be there.
07:58 >> I'm going to be there.
07:59 >> I'm going to be there.
08:00 >> I'm going to be there.
08:01 >> I'm going to be there.
08:02 >> I'm going to be there.
08:03 >> I'm going to be there.
08:04 >> I'm going to be there.
08:05 >> I'm going to be there.
08:06 >> I'm going to be there.
08:07 >> I'm going to be there.
08:08 >> I'm going to be there.
08:09 >> I'm going to be there.
08:10 >> I'm going to be there.
08:11 >> I'm going to be there.
08:12 >> I'm going to be there.
08:13 >> I'm going to be there.
08:14 >> I'm going to be there.
08:15 >> I'm going to be there.
08:16 >> I'm going to be there.
08:17 >> I'm going to be there.
08:18 >> I'm going to be there.
08:19 >> I'm going to be there.
08:20 >> I'm going to be there.
08:21 >> I'm going to be there.
08:22 >> I'm going to be there.
08:23 >> I'm going to be there.
08:24 >> I'm going to be there.
08:25 >> I'm going to be there.
08:26 >> I'm going to be there.
08:27 >> I'm going to be there.
08:29 >> I'm going to be there.
08:30 >> I'm going to be there.
08:31 >> I'm going to be there.
08:32 >> I'm going to be there.
08:33 >> I'm going to be there.
08:34 >> I'm going to be there.
08:35 >> I'm going to be there.
08:36 >> I'm going to be there.
08:37 >> I'm going to be there.
08:38 >> I'm going to be there.
08:39 >> I'm going to be there.
08:40 >> I'm going to be there.
08:41 >> I'm going to be there.
08:42 >> I'm going to be there.
08:43 >> I'm going to be there.
08:44 >> I'm going to be there.
08:45 >> I'm going to be there.
08:46 >> I'm going to be there.
08:47 >> I'm going to be there.
08:48 >> I'm going to be there.
08:49 >> I'm going to be there.
08:50 >> I'm going to be there.
08:52 >> As the teases allude to, there's some fantastic dates throughout this thing.
08:57 I think people would be very impressed with the energy level, the adventure level of some of them, the excitement.
09:05 One in particular is very high profile.
09:08 >> Oh.
09:09 >> Yeah.
09:10 >> When you're talking about driving a vintage bronco to a heliport and getting in a luxury helicopter and flying it through the skyscrapers of L.A.
09:20 And then out into the Pacific to land on a yacht, that's a pretty good date.
09:25 >> Yeah.
09:26 Are you laughing?
09:27 Are you like I can't wait to tell my daughters about this?
09:29 Like dad will be home soon.
09:30 Fire up the chopper.
09:32 >> See, I mean, dad is definitely out of my price range anyway, but it's nice that I was able to get it.
09:38 >> Normally on the bachelor bachelorette they come home to meet mom and dad.
09:41 For you, do you have to bring home whoever you're choosing to meet your daughters?
09:45 Is that how it works?
09:46 >> Yeah, yeah.
09:47 That's a nice twist.
09:49 I really think that the wisdom and the perspective of someone in their 40s and mid to late 40s was very helpful to me.
09:59 Because I had some questions at that point.
10:03 And my daughters picked up on the same questions in discussions with the women.
10:09 >> I like that.
10:10 You're aligned.
10:11 >> It was uncanny.
10:13 >> I have one beef with you, Gary.
10:15 >> Only one?
10:16 >> Only one.
10:17 No rose for aunt chippy?
10:20 >> I think aunt chippy had expectations for going home early.
10:25 She was snoozing out back halfway through the night.
10:29 So I don't think she could have stood very much more activity.
10:32 >> You were so cute to aunt chippy.
10:34 I think she needs to come on as that voice to just kind of, you know, throughout the whole season.
10:39 >> That would be awesome.
10:40 >> Right?
10:41 >> Yeah, like the voice of conscience.
10:42 >> The voice of conscience.
10:43 Like, Gary, what's going on?
10:45 >> What are you doing here?
10:46 >> What are you doing, Gar?
10:48 Bring it in, Gar.
10:49 >> Perfect.
10:50 >> Perfect.
10:51 We'll get that right there.
10:52 >> I want to ask you, you were on the show before when all the casting went down.
10:56 What's the craziest thing, so they choose you, what's the craziest thing they made you do to get ready for this?
11:01 I heard they had you go through tests and I.Q. things.
11:04 >> Yeah, so I'm on vacation in February.
11:07 And I, you know, get this call that I have to go immediately to a clinic for an STD test.
11:15 >> Did you know what that was?
11:17 >> I did.
11:18 It took me a moment.
11:19 I was like, really, right now?
11:22 I'm sort of on vacation.
11:23 >> Were you with your daughters?
11:25 >> No, I was with a former girlfriend.
11:28 Actually, we've remained good friends.
11:30 >> Oh, good.
11:31 >> Yeah.
11:32 And of course she looked at me like, what the hell?
11:34 She knew I was in this process.
11:36 >> Yes.
11:37 >> And then immediately after that, it was like, okay, we need to start your background check.
11:41 And they go, okay, there's 160 questions.
11:44 I'm on vacation.
11:45 You know, it's like it can wait until tomorrow.
11:48 >> As a matter of fact, yes, it did.
11:50 Thanks for asking.
11:51 I get that out there.
11:52 >> And then I'm thinking about the ex-girlfriend.
11:54 She could double back, Gary.
11:55 They love an ex-girlfriend that comes into things.
11:57 I'm just warning you, I've watched a lot of these seasons.
12:00 >> She has clearly stated she wants to have nothing to do with it.
12:03 >> I like her already.
12:05 Jane Fonda has famously said that intimacy is better in your 70s.
12:10 Can you elaborate on that?
12:11 >> Well, sure.
12:12 She's Jane Fonda.
12:13 >> Yeah.
12:14 >> I guess the serious answer, though, is I believe that's true.
12:20 In your 30s, it's more lusty.
12:23 In your 70s, I think it's a lot more like love.
12:25 >> I love that.
12:27 >> You're -- like in the fantasy suites, the individuals involved in that, we couldn't wait to get behind closed doors without cameras and without
12:35 microphones and really have the difficult questions answered that we're not able to do in the public eye.
12:43 And it was -- I will tell you, it was a watershed moment.
12:46 >> Oh, wow.
