00:06 >> We train Kenyan Sign Language to student
00:11 to do certificates which runs a three-month duration.
00:15 This three-month duration, the student is equipped
00:21 with the basics of communicating
00:25 with the deaf persons outside there.
00:28 >> I'm taking a certificate in Kenyan Sign Language.
00:31 I'm an interpreter.
00:33 I do interpret through sign language,
00:37 Kenyan Sign Language to deaf, helping them to--
00:40 in social activities, even in decision-making.
00:45 >> We have 63 students.
00:48 We are doing expressive sign language exam
00:51 where students are supposed to express themselves in the signs
00:56 that they have so far acquired.
00:59 And we assess whether they are able to express themselves
01:03 and to communicate with persons who are deaf.
01:06 >> We understand that the deaf are the minority people
01:11 in our community and our society.
01:13 And Kenya Institute of Special Education has tried
01:19 in impacting people with the knowledge
01:23 of Kenyan Sign Language which is a mode of communication
01:27 which is used by people with deafness.
01:30 So we train Kenyan Sign Language
01:33 and we assess our student before they go out there
01:38 so that they are well equipped with the skills to communicate
01:43 with learners and persons who have hearing impairment.
01:47 >> The printed instructions is the exam.
01:50 And this exam, we expose to them a few minutes to the exam
01:54 where they're supposed to go through the exam
01:57 and acquaint themselves with the vocabulary
01:59 that is required during signing.
02:01 A student is supposed to take a maximum of 15 minutes to sign.
02:05 All these students are hearing but we have some who are hard
02:09 of hearing and maybe the hearing impairment
02:11 that they've acquired is-- they have is acquired.
02:15 That is post-lingual.
02:17 It has been acquired after the acquisition of language
02:20 and maybe they know they face challenges in their places
02:23 of work, they are not able to communicate normally
02:26 like others so they come here to acquire the basic signing skills.
02:30 >> Out there in our community, you can meet a deaf person
02:35 and he has difficulty in communicating but you see
02:41 like a problem that-- the way to solve
02:45 that problem is through one person or two knowing how
02:50 to communicate through sign language.
02:52 So my willing was how I can learn the sign language
02:57 and be able to help them, be able to communicate with them
03:00 and be able to solve their issues.
