00:00 A Deputy State Coroner held a directions hearing for the inquest into the disappearance of
00:06 toddler William Tyrrell, where she announced more hearings will be held in March next year,
00:13 depending on the highly anticipated decision from the Director of Public Prosecutions in
00:17 New South Wales over whether or not to lay criminal charges in the case.
00:23 The inquest has been going on for more than four years now, and it's been three years
00:27 since the last hearing.
00:28 Its aim is to determine what happened to William when he vanished from his foster grandmother's
00:33 house on the New South Wales Mid North Coast in September 2014.
00:37 The Council assisting the coroner told the court today the DPP had recently received
00:42 an issue for advice from New South Wales Police, which has nothing to do with the inquest,
00:47 but they are awaiting that result.
00:49 Sources with knowledge of this case confirmed in July that the strike force investigating
00:54 his disappearance handed their brief of evidence against William's foster mother to the DPP
01:00 for advice on whether they have enough evidence to charge her.
01:03 The detectives on the case have previously revealed their latest theory is that William
01:08 died by accident at that property in Kendal before his foster mother covered it up by
01:13 disposing of his body.
01:15 It's not known what, though if any, evidence they have to support this theory, and she
01:20 has always strenuously denied any knowledge of what happened to him.
01:24 A lawyer representing both of his foster parents spoke on their behalf today outside court.
01:30 William's foster mother maintains she had nothing to do with his disappearance and asked
01:36 the police to find, continue looking for him and the answers as to what happened to William.
01:43 If the DPP decides there is enough evidence to lay charges in this case, the inquest will
01:48 be put on an indefinite hold until after any criminal trial is finalised.
01:54 If they decide not to lay any charges over his disappearance at this stage, the inquest
01:58 will resume for another two weeks in March.
