00:14 According to Odisha's Balgarh Chief District Medical and Public Health Officer Sadhu Charandas,

00:20 out of the total five persons who have died due to the deadly infection, two cases were

00:25 reported from Sohila block, while the rest were from Atabira, Bhiden and Barpali blocks

00:30 of Bargarh district each.

00:32 He also informed that four other people were found to be positive for scrub typhus, however

00:36 they have been treated.

00:37 Meanwhile, in Shimla, the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital has been witnessing a

00:42 substantial influx of patients displaying symptoms of the deadly infection.

00:47 According to the officials, a total of 295 cases of the infection have been confirmed

01:04 It is spread to people through the bite of infected chiggers.

01:08 Chiggers are tiny mites that feed on the skin of animals and humans.

01:11 They are found in warm, humid areas with dense vegetation such as forests, bushlands and

01:16 grasslands.

01:18 The causative agent of scrub typhus, the bacterium, is primarily a parasite of certain mites,

01:23 of which two closely related species, Leptotrombidium akamushi and L. deliens, are the carriers of

01:30 the disease.

01:31 During the larval stage, these mites acquire the infection from wild rodents or other small

01:36 animals.

01:37 The infection is passed to humans when a mite larva bites a person.

01:41 A person falls ill with scrub typhus about 10-12 days after being bitten by an infected

01:46 mite, a reddish or pinkish lesion appears at the site of the mite bite, and the person

01:50 begins to experience headache, fever, chills and general pains, along with swollen lymph

01:55 glands.

01:56 About one week after the start of the fever, a pinkish rash develops over the skin of the

02:00 trunk and may extend to the arms and legs.

02:03 While the course of the fever may end in two weeks, it is not unusual for it to last three

02:08 or even four weeks.

02:09 There is no vaccine available to prevent scrub typhus.

02:12 The only way to reduce the chances of getting scrub typhus is to avoid contact with infected

02:18 chiggers.

02:19 One can prevent getting infected by focusing on rodent control, cleanliness and maintaining

02:24 hygiene, being cautious while handling pets, applying mite repellents to exposed skin,

02:30 and regular cleaning of surroundings, including removal of shrubs and low vegetation.
