00:00 A massive hurricane churning in the Atlantic Ocean is set to impact the east coast of the
00:12 US and Canada this weekend.
00:14 Hurricane Lee continues to creep towards New England, where hurricane and tropical storm
00:19 watches have been issued for much of its coastal residents in anticipation of the colossal
00:23 storm's possible impact on Friday and through the weekend.
00:27 The storm's centre is expected to pass close to the region's south-east before barrelling
00:31 near or over Maine and Atlantic Canada over the weekend as a large and dangerous cyclone.
00:38 Lee currently has sustained winds of 110mph, according to the US National Hurricane Centre.
00:45 Residents in coastal Canada have also been warned to brace for the storm.
00:49 Lee is predicted to cause violent storms in the region soon as it looms over states already
00:54 grappling with tornadoes and catastrophic flooding.
00:57 The severity of the situation can be further ascertained from flash flood warnings in Connecticut
01:02 and continuous downpours in parts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
01:07 The destruction has led to the evacuation of hundreds, widespread property damage and
01:11 even the collapse of some structures.
01:14 Though the storm, now a Category 2 hurricane, is expected to weaken as it approaches, it
01:18 will still have a massive radius of damaging winds that will be significantly felt along
01:24 coastal New England and Canada's Atlantic provinces.
01:31 On top of this, both Rhode Island and Connecticut recently faced tornadoes that wreaked havoc.
01:36 These severe weather conditions have disrupted daily life, leading to roof damage, uprooted
01:41 trees and fallen power lines.
01:43 Residents have been receiving warnings on their mobiles while emergency sirens echoed
01:47 through various regions.
01:49 Apart from massive infrastructure damage, the weather crisis has had a severe impact
01:52 on people's lives.
01:54 Many homeowners are dealing with flooded basements and damaged property.
01:58 Community members have been lending each other a helping hand, but the threat isn't over
02:02 yet.
02:03 In some areas, cars were found submerged in newly formed sinkholes and firefighters had
02:07 to use inflatable boats for rescuing people stranded in their vehicles.
02:11 Due to least size, experts say it is too early to tell where it may make landfall.
02:16 But they said it will likely be somewhere between Maine and Nova Scotia on Sunday or
02:20 Monday.
02:21 Ahead of landfall, forecasters say it will bring coastal flooding, several inches of
02:25 rain and storm surges to the region by the weekend.
02:28 The impact of climate change on the frequency of tropical storms is still unclear, but increased
02:33 sea surface temperatures warm the air above and make more energy available to drive hurricanes.
02:39 As a result, they are likely to be more intense, with more extreme rainfall.
02:43 "Dude, that's wild!"
02:56 "Yeah, that's wild."
