00:00 We will hear more on that resignation from our regional
00:03 correspondent in Nairobi, Olivier Bizeau.
00:07 >> He has been in the role for just over two years.
00:11 He has -- he started his job after the fall of Omar al-Bashir
00:18 in 2019, but he has been hugely unpopular throughout his time as
00:23 a UN special envoy in Sudan. He's been especially unpopular
00:28 because he was the head of the army, general al-Burhan.
00:34 So he has said that he was to blame for the beginning of the
00:39 war, which broke out in April. He's also called for his
00:44 resignation back in June. Now, the leader of the special
00:49 envoy -- sorry -- of Sudan has also been hugely unpopular among
00:54 civilians. They have blamed him for not predicting that this war
00:58 was going to take place, even though all signs pointed in that
01:02 direction from the beginning of this year. So in his final speech
01:07 to the UN Security Council, parties said that the situation in
01:13 Sudan is deteriorating rapidly. He said that the situation is
01:18 morphing into a full-scale civil war. He also warned about the
01:23 situation in the western Darfur region after the killing of 40
01:29 people over a market in the capital of south Darfur, Nyala, on
01:34 Wednesday. So the rapid support forces have long been accused of
01:40 using these civilian neighbourhoods, like markets and
01:44 schools and hospitals, in order to use them as human shields, while
01:49 the army has been accused of repeatedly bombing these civilian
01:53 neighbourhoods in which the rapid support forces have been embedding
01:57 themselves. So Darfur is home to a quarter of Sudan's population. It
02:04 has also seen some of the worst fighting in the conflict, and
02:08 there's also been a rise of ethnic violence there as well. But it's
02:12 not the only place that's seen violence. There has also been
02:15 violence in the capital, Khartoum. Just on Sunday, 40 people were
02:20 killed in an airstrike over a market in southern Khartoum. Estimates
02:25 show that 7,500 people have been killed since the conflict broke out
02:30 in April, but the real number is likely to be a lot higher.
