00:00 Patriots Daily is brought to you by FanDuel, the exclusive wedgering partner of the CLNS
00:04 Media Network.
00:05 It's Taylor Cowles here for CLNS Media.
00:09 In football, a lot of the time you hear, "Put players in the best position to succeed."
00:14 Now like a lot of things in football, that can completely be interpreted as jargon because
00:19 what exactly does putting players in the right positions actually mean when you're looking
00:23 at the X's and O's and schematics of everything.
00:26 So I'm going to try to use Bill O'Brien's strategies against the Eagles to try to gain
00:30 some clarity and show how you can use personnel groupings, alignments, formations, and motions
00:37 and shifts to put players in the best position to succeed.
00:42 Taylor, what does that mean?
00:43 I'll show you.
00:44 This offense really struggled to get anything significant going on offense in the first
00:48 quarter of the game against the Eagles.
00:50 A lot of that was due to their own mistakes, but you also have to credit the Eagles for
00:54 being on top of a lot of things that Patriots wanted to try.
00:57 And you didn't really see a spark from the offense until the second quarter when they
01:00 started incorporating more bunch formations, which get three receivers close together and
01:06 can oftentimes force the defense to check into certain rules to avoid them getting picked
01:11 off, miscommunications, and certain things like that.
01:13 But Bill O'Brien did a great job exploiting what the Eagles are doing early and then building
01:18 off that once they tried to counter.
01:20 So we're going to show that here, third and five in the second quarter.
01:25 Patriots come out, 11 personnel, three receivers, one tight end.
01:28 You see Hunter at the top of the bunch formation, Kendrick Bourne next to him, and Juju Smith-Schuster
01:33 as the inside most receiver.
01:35 Now based on this initial alignment, Juju Smith-Schuster is actually going to be covered
01:42 by the safety right here, the inside most defender.
01:45 But you're going to see him shift to the outside, going from the number three alignment to the
01:50 number one alignment, counting outside in.
01:53 This gets him matched up against Darius Slay, who's got outside leverage.
01:58 Now we're going to see that the Patriots run basically a smash concept with Hunter Henry
02:03 running a deep corner and then Juju Smith-Schuster running an out behind it.
02:08 But because of Juju Smith-Schuster's release, it's going to create a pick play where Hunter
02:12 Henry just basically gets in the way and creates a bunch of traffic for Darius Slay to have
02:17 to fight through.
02:19 So we're going to see Juju releases right behind Hunter Henry, and then you see the
02:24 mess.
02:25 Darius Slay makes contact with Hunter Henry just because the big guy's getting in the
02:29 way and it gets Juju wide open underneath, right at the sticks.
02:33 Unfortunately, he doesn't make the catch, but this was something that Bill O'Brien would
02:37 go back to later.
02:39 So this is, again, a later third down in the second quarter.
02:44 Once again, Juju Smith-Schuster's inside most alignment gets him matched up on the safety,
02:48 who's the inside most defender, and what the Eagles are trying to do to defend this bunch
02:54 concept.
02:55 Again, Juju shifts to the outside to become the number one and is covered by Darius Slay.
03:01 But this time, they're actually going to run more of a high-low concept inside where Hunter
03:08 Henry once again is setting a pick, just going vertical to try to get in the way, and Darius
03:13 Slay is going to have to fight through that traffic.
03:15 But instead of fighting where his leverage already is outside, he's going to have to
03:19 go all the way inside to try to chase Juju Smith-Schuster, which, as you might expect,
03:23 is not going to go well.
03:26 So we'll see right here, similar release.
03:28 It looks like the same thing, but you see Juju drifting inside.
03:32 Darius Slay has to catch up, but oh look, Hunter Henry once again is right in his way.
03:38 Juju is wide open underneath.
03:39 Catch and run, first down.
03:43 A lot of issues for Darius Slay there.
03:45 So the Eagles said, "All right, we're not going to let you do that anymore."
03:48 So here you're going to see that Avanti Maddox, the slot defender, has actually backed up
03:52 so that the point receiver, that's the player who's on the line of scrimmage in the bunch,
03:57 can't create that conflict and make a big mess.
04:00 Instead they're going to use what's known as a spot check.
04:03 That means that Darius Slay, rather than having to chase the outside most receiver, this time
04:07 it's Demario Douglas, he just takes the first deep route that's kind of going outside and
04:12 is going to squeeze on that.
04:14 Avanti Maddox is going to either run up the seam, take the flat defender, which means
04:19 he's going to go outside, or he's just going to take whoever the number two receiver is.
04:25 Now when I say final number two, I mean that based on the releases.
04:28 So as we saw in the other clips, Juju released behind Hunter Henry, which essentially made
04:33 him the number two receiver.
04:35 And then you're going to see the inside defender, N'Kobe Dean, is going to take either the hook
04:41 or the final number three, so the third receiver who releases into the route.
04:48 Now again, they're going to make this look like the same play they used earlier, where
04:53 the point man, now Kendrick Bourne, runs a pick with Demario Douglas, the outside receiver,
04:59 running underneath it.
05:00 But what they're actually going to do, and I'm sorry, go back real quick.
05:04 So if this were to be the route that they expected, N'Kobe Dean would come down on the
05:09 drag where he has leverage, and you'd see Evante Maddox carry that route from the point
05:14 receiver.
05:15 But instead, the Patriots are running a deeper smash concept, with the point receiver running
05:19 a very, very deep corner, which is essentially just a clear out route, and Demario Douglas
05:24 running a corner route, but essentially making it look like a drag or shallow cross early
05:30 in the route to create confusion.
05:32 So now, Darius Slay is going to be responsible for taking that deeper route that comes out
05:38 initially, and Evante Maddox is going to be responsible for the second route, which
05:42 is going to be Demario Douglas on the corner.
05:45 But his release for Demario Douglas is going to make that confusing, because as you can
05:49 see, he's right behind Kendrick Bourne.
05:53 So Evante Maddox squeezes on that first route because he's responsible for the seam, but
05:58 then also sees that Demario Douglas is underneath him, and you're going to see him start to
06:02 get into a bit of conflict here.
06:04 The eyes are on the quarterback, but Demario Douglas is already in his blind spot, and
06:10 by the time Evante Maddox realizes, Demario Douglas is already open and Maddox has to
06:16 recover.
06:17 All that grass to run into, great ball from Mac Jones, first down, and that's a great
06:23 example of, as you can see, we'll run that back one more time, Demario Douglas creating
06:33 conflict with his route stem, doing a great job getting in the blind spot.
06:36 Maddox eyes on the QB, doesn't realize he's being attacked by the time he does.
06:41 Too late, Demario Douglas already has a ton of space.
06:44 Great job by Bill O'Brien.
06:47 First two times he sees man coverage and attacks it with essentially pick plays.
06:51 The third time, the Eagles check and counter to make sure they don't get picked, but the
06:56 Patriots are ready for it with the concept that takes advantage of that corner, I'm sorry,
07:01 the slot corner in Evante Maddox, and they get a big play off of it.
07:06 With the NFL season officially underway, it's been pretty tough finding time to cook for
07:10 myself and my family, and even tougher making meals that both taste good and don't destroy
07:15 my body.
07:16 Thankfully, our friends at Factor provide ready to eat meal kits that are not only chef
07:20 prepared, but also dietitian approved and delivered straight to your door.
07:24 Now, I don't know about you, but I don't know any chefs or any dietitians, so this has been
07:28 a huge help for me on a daily basis.
07:31 These saved me a ton of money.
07:33 I don't have to go to the grocery store to get ingredients, and most importantly, they
07:38 taste fantastic.
07:39 Additionally, they saved me a desperate trip to the nearest fast food place when I have
07:43 completely forgotten to cook myself dinner.

07:52 That's code patsdaily50 at factormeals.com/patsdaily50 to get 50% off.
08:03 We're also going to see that Bill O'Brien did a great job using formations to create
08:07 conflict as well.
08:08 Here, the Patriots go with an empty formation, and they have a wide receiver outside who's
08:14 covered by a corner.
08:15 That makes sense.
08:16 A wide receiver in the slot to the bottom who's followed by a slot corner, and a tight
08:20 end followed by a linebacker.
08:21 Now, all these things are pretty standard, but the Patriots also have a running back
08:26 in Ramond Dury-Stevenson all the way on the outside to the bottom of the screen, which
08:30 gets him an assignment against Darius Slay.
08:32 Now, obviously, this is not an advantageous matchup for the offense, but what is is wide
08:38 receiver Mario Douglas ending up basically in a bracket between an inside leveraged linebacker
08:45 and a safety who's going to drop down to cover the flat.
08:48 Now, neither of these players are equipped to handle DeMario Douglas' quickness, and
08:52 we're going to see that here as DeMario Douglas runs basically a staggered in-breaking route
08:57 where he's going to close space on the linebacker and run an inside breaking route with the
09:03 linebacker trying to match.
09:04 But again, with DeMario Douglas' quickness, this is not an ideal situation.
09:09 So Douglas is going to close that space, kind of stagger, as you can see, just to get into
09:13 the linebacker's grill, kind of square him up and see where he reacts.
09:17 The linebacker is going to have inside leverage and DeMario Douglas is going to break towards
09:20 that.
09:21 But because of his quickness, it's going to allow him to get separation, as you can see.
09:25 Now, see, Dean tries to jam him to slow him down, but DeMario still slips underneath and
09:30 gets open, as you see.
09:33 But the pass from Mac Jones is a bit high.
09:37 And it bounces off DeMario Douglas' hands.
09:39 But creating a matchup where you have a wide receiver lined up against the linebacker,
09:44 especially someone with the stop-start ability and the explosiveness of a DeMario Douglas,
09:50 great job by Bill O'Brien creating that mismatch.
09:52 And they actually did this again later in the game.
09:57 Now this time, it's a bit of a more confusing situation because the Patriots, once again,
10:03 you're going to have two receivers on one side of the formation, both covered by cornerbacks,
10:07 and then a tight end in Mike Yosiki in the slot covered by a safety.
10:10 Again, pretty standard.
10:12 But this time, with the running back being matched up against a cornerback on the outside,
10:17 again, because the Eagles are in zone, that's going to create a mismatch with, I say, offensive
10:22 weapon Ty Montgomery, because he's a running back, he's a receiver.
10:25 If I were a defense, I would just consider him a receiver and say that this is 11 personnel.
10:30 But because Ty Montgomery does both, it can create conflict in what the defense matches
10:35 with.
10:36 Here, the Eagles match with a nickel defense, but because Ty Montgomery is on the inside
10:41 most position against a zone defense for the Eagles, it's going to get him matched up against
10:46 a pair of linebackers.
10:47 Again, big mismatch.
10:49 Initially, Ty Montgomery is going to stem to make it look like the Patriots' juke concept
10:54 where he sits between the two defenders, but he's actually going to get the linebacker
10:59 to bite on that and break back outside on a whip route.
11:04 So we're on the play.
11:05 You see him start to stem inside.
11:08 Both linebackers inside for the Eagles bite down on the route, but then Ty Montgomery
11:13 breaks outside.
11:14 He's open.
11:16 Mack Jones puts it on him.
11:17 First down inside the 10 yard line.
11:20 So that was just week one from the Patriots offense.
11:23 Really exciting stuff and some really great examples of Bill O'Brien moving guys around
11:28 the formation, using different shifts to play with coverage rules and getting guys aligned
11:33 inside what he calls the playmate positions at the number three spot, as we saw with Montgomery
11:39 in the number two week spot, as we saw with Mario Douglas to get them matched up against
11:43 linebackers and make their jobs a little bit easier.
