Does Cold Medicine Actually Work? FDA Finds Popular Cold Medicine Brands Ineffective
  • 7 months ago
An advisory panel to the FDA unanimously voted that oral versions of the decongestant phenylephrine, found in many popular over-the-counter cold and allergy medications, are ineffective at relieving nasal congestion. Popular brands that contain phenylephrine include versions of Nyquil, Benadryl, Sudafed, and Mucinex. The FDA could begin removing phenylephrine from the market, forcing manufacturers like Procter & Gamble and Johnson & Johnson to reformulate or pull existing products from shelves. Retail stores in the US sold $1.8 billion worth of products containing phenylephrine in 2022.
