Welcome to the second installation of putting Dr. G on the spot for the whole
00:04
month of September. We're focusing on infections and for a change today we're
00:10
focusing on women and we're focusing on a condition called honeymoon cystitis
00:17
As the name suggests honeymoon cystitis is a type of infection that occurs
00:29
during the early phases of sexual intercourse especially a woman during
00:34
the debut of their first sexual intercourse. Why does it happen? In fact
00:39
nobody really knows but it can be as common as 30% according to some studies
00:46
So what is proposed is that perhaps a bacteria that usually line the outer
00:52
layers of the vagina is being pushed into the bladder during sexual
00:57
intercourse and it tends to happen in the first three months of someone
01:02
whenever they start having a very active sex life. In fact most of the time
01:09
honeymoon cystitis can resolve by itself but it can go on to up to two years
01:15
following the sexual debut and therefore it can be a little bit of a nuisance in
01:20
the relationship. Imagine every time there's a sexual activity then the woman
01:25
started getting symptoms of burning sensation, and frequent urination, painful
01:31
urination, to some extent might even get temperature or even to the extent of
01:36
bleeding in the urine. Honeymoon cystitis itself is actually not a sexually
01:41
transmitted infection because one would get really worried because after sexual
01:46
activity you start getting this problem whether your partner is passing this
01:50
infection to you. Contrary to common belief honeymoon cystitis is actually
01:55
caused the vast majority by a bacteria called E. coli. Apart from that 80%
02:02
caused by E. coli, 20% is caused by other bacteria such as Staphylococcus,
02:09
Klebsiella or even infection such as Pseudomonas and all these infections are
02:18
completely curable by antibiotics. So to go and see a doctor sometimes you don't
02:24
even need your urine culture, we can give you antibiotics for a period of three to
02:30
five days and tend to solve the problems. Next week we're going to talk about
02:34
repeated or recurrent urinary tract infection. As we know urinary tract
02:39
infection or UTI is so common in women whenever it happens on regular basis, how
02:45
do you avoid it and how do you minimize your risk of getting it after sexual
02:49
intercourse? If you need to find out stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr. G
02:54
on the Spot.
