Wentworth Falls firefighter Gavin Clifton is set to once again tackle some of the steepest stairs in the Blue Mountains - Katoomba's challenging Furber Steps

00:00 So figures just recently came out.

00:01 It's approximately two people now

00:04 that are being diagnosed with MND a day,

00:06 and two people sadly are passing away

00:08 from the disease each day now.

00:10 So it's on the increase,

00:12 and we really need to find a cure for it.

00:15 - As long as we climbed up the stairs all over night, Tom,

00:18 we've got this beautiful sunrise

00:19 that comes up over the east there.

00:20 - To see that, and to be able to take the headlamps off

00:23 and get into the climb for the day,

00:25 that's sort of where it really counts.

00:27 That's sort of where you feel like

00:28 you've got the hard bit of the climb done,

00:29 and then we can just get into the rest of the day.

00:31 They love the fact that we push ourselves

00:33 and that we do it as hard as we can for them

00:36 in achieving a result and a cure for this insidious disease.

00:40 If I can achieve the 50 grand this year,

00:43 then that'll be about $100,000 over the four years

00:45 that we've raised here in the Blue Mountains alone.

00:53 for MND support this year.

00:55 We love supporting our local community,

00:57 and it's here on our doorstep, the Furbis Stairs,

00:59 where the climb's taking place.

01:01 So we'll be able to support the climbers,

01:03 provide them breakfast.

01:04 This year, we're also at the end of the climb,

01:05 four o'clock onwards.

01:07 The terrace bar will be open for runners

01:09 to be able to come and have a beverage afterwards

01:10 or a snack, and family and friends are welcome

01:13 to come down and enjoy that as well.

01:14 Gavin's got me in this year.

01:15 So there's a team of four of us from Scenic World.

01:17 We'll be starting at 10 o'clock at night

01:19 and running through all the way to four o'clock

01:21 the following afternoon as a team,

01:23 taking in turns to go up and down the Furbis Stairs.
