00:00 Patriots Daily is brought to you by FanDuel,
00:02 the exclusive wedgering partner of the CLNS Media Network.
00:05 - What's going on everyone?
00:09 It's Taylor Cowles here for CLNS Media.
00:11 With the NFL season one short week away,
00:13 I wanted to leave a little Patriots bubble
00:15 I've been living in this summer for an objective view
00:18 of the NFL landscape and where New England stands
00:20 relative to their 2023 opponents.
00:23 Now to provide this fresh insight,
00:24 I enlisted the help of one of the business's
00:26 hardest working and most insightful analysts.
00:29 You know her from NFL Live and if you're wise,
00:31 you've been following her podcast
00:32 where she crushed a series of division preview shows.
00:35 Ladies and gentlemen, Mina Kimes.
00:37 Mina, how you doing today?
00:39 - I'm good.
00:40 And if you're watching this and you're a Patriots fan,
00:42 I'm guessing it's a pretty large percentage,
00:44 definitely check out the AFC East preview
00:47 because the host of this show was my guest on that show.
00:51 And I thought he did a terrific job,
00:52 not just talking about the Patriots,
00:54 but of course talking about the division rivals
00:56 and what's sure to be a very exciting division this year.
01:00 - Yeah, thank you for the kind words.
01:01 And it's an easy division to talk about.
01:02 Like you said, there's gonna be a lot of rock fights,
01:05 a lot of talent, and we're gonna see in this season preview
01:09 how exactly that's gonna play out.
01:11 So starting with little Patriots,
01:13 obviously went eight and nine last year,
01:15 third in the AFC East, a lot of improvements,
01:18 obviously Bill O'Brien, Mike Gusicki,
01:20 some of the bigger additions on offense
01:22 that are gonna help out.
01:23 Defense was already pretty stacked last season,
01:26 but they also added Marte Maupu.
01:28 I said him first, like he was the first pick.
01:30 He's just the guy I may have been most excited about,
01:32 Christian Gonzalez and Keon White.
01:34 We were both pretty excited about this defense.
01:36 So what's your outlook overall for the Patriots this season?
01:40 - You know, if the Patriots weren't in the AFC East,
01:44 I think there's a lot of divisions
01:45 that I would probably have them as realistically contending.
01:49 Unfortunately, it is a very challenging division.
01:52 They have what, FTN, which is run by Aaron Schatz,
01:57 who does a terrific job every year with their Almanac,
01:59 projected them to have the hardest schedule in football.
02:02 So that's coloring my analysis a little bit,
02:06 because otherwise, I would say, I think this is,
02:09 it's a good team, it's a team that should be better
02:11 than last year, a team that has an elite defense
02:14 and offense that I think could surprise some people,
02:17 frankly, I think they're gonna win a lot of close,
02:20 gross, ugly games.
02:23 And when you have a team that's built that way,
02:27 there's always room for them to pull out some surprises.
02:29 So I don't have them winning the division,
02:33 but I wouldn't be surprised if they scratch
02:36 and claw their way to the playoffs somehow as a wild card,
02:39 nonetheless, on the strength of that defense
02:41 and an improved offense.
02:43 - I don't think Bill Belichick could win it any other way.
02:45 He loves those nasty games that fans love to criticize,
02:48 but he's like, hey, a win is a win.
02:51 So we're gonna start off with week one
02:53 against the Philadelphia Eagles,
02:55 the Super Bowl runner-ups, right out of the gate,
02:57 just gonna give them the toughest opponent
02:59 they may have all season.
03:01 Obviously, out of conference opponents,
03:03 so they don't play each other very often.
03:05 The last time they played was in 2019, Brady's last season.
03:09 It was an ugly one.
03:10 It was a 10 to seven loss for the Patriots in Philadelphia.
03:13 Brady had a 67.3 passer rating.
03:17 Carson Wentz had a 74.4 passer rating.
03:20 And the only touchdown for the Patriots
03:22 was a 15-yard pass from Julian Edelman.
03:24 That's how desperate they got just to get on the scoreboard.
03:27 How do you see things playing out this time around?
03:29 - Yeah, I got Philadelphia winning this one.
03:32 It's certainly a tough way to start the season.
03:34 I mean, I have the Eagles winning the NFC,
03:36 to put it in perspective.
03:38 You know, I think that with the Patriots' offense,
03:43 there might be some growing pains at first,
03:46 question marks in the offensive line,
03:47 obviously new system.
03:49 Bill O'Brien running the show now,
03:51 we can talk about in depth,
03:52 but the Eagles' defense,
03:56 they've had some pretty significant losses.
03:58 I think they're also kind of undergoing a period of change,
04:02 but I don't love how that Patriots' offensive line
04:06 matches up against the pass rush
04:07 that led the Leeds Sacks last year.
04:10 - And you mentioned Bill O'Brien.
04:11 So the Patriots have a new offensive coordinator,
04:13 Eagles have a new defensive coordinator,
04:15 and Shaunda Sy, what kind of changes do you think
04:17 we're gonna see from each of those guys in their schemes?
04:20 - Yeah, Desai's an interesting coach
04:22 'cause he comes from the big Fangio tree.
04:25 And I think that there's a lot of coaches in the NFL
04:29 right now from that tree,
04:31 or have called sort of similar defenses.
04:34 And with the Eagles,
04:36 there was a lot of frustration amongst the fan base last year
04:39 about the defense being somewhat passive,
04:41 sitting back in zones, not rushing,
04:44 not blitzing enough, that kind of thing.
04:46 I think that they'll be surprised by some of the change-ups
04:50 they get with Desai running the show,
04:52 just based on things I've heard him say.
04:55 He was in Seattle briefly, Chicago.
04:58 So far this preseason too, watching them,
05:02 they've definitely been more aggressive.
05:03 So I wouldn't be surprised if the Eagles' defense
05:06 turns up the aggression a little bit,
05:08 especially against a Patriots' defense
05:11 that really struggled with pressure last year.
05:13 - Yeah, and you're hoping the Patriots,
05:14 obviously, have had a ton of issues on the offensive line.
05:17 We don't know for a fact
05:18 if we're gonna see Mike and Wynoo, Cole Strange,
05:20 or even who's gonna be at one of the tackle spots.
05:22 So I saw last year that I don't think anybody used stunts
05:25 in line games less than the Eagles.
05:27 I'm hoping that's the case again on week one.
05:29 Otherwise, that's gonna be a long game
05:32 if the Patriots have an offensive line
05:33 that doesn't have a ton of chemistry.
05:34 All right, so we're starting off with an L.
05:36 Very fair, very reasonable.
05:38 Week two, Patriots play the Dolphins,
05:41 but thank goodness it's not gonna be in Miami.
05:43 We know that's a house of horrors for them.
05:46 Last year, the Patriots split games,
05:47 but it wasn't totally fair because Tua Tagovailoa,
05:50 who is still undefeated, 4-0 against the Pats as a starter,
05:54 he only played the first week in that game.
05:56 They lost the Patriots 20-7,
05:59 with Tua posting a 104.4 passer rating
06:01 and throwing a touchdown.
06:03 But to be fair, these games with Tua
06:05 always come down to the fourth quarter,
06:07 and it feels like because the Patriots
06:09 haven't really had consistency on offense,
06:11 and obviously in the beginning of the year,
06:12 they're usually trying to still figure things out,
06:15 feels like they make some mistake,
06:16 a fumble, a bad turnover,
06:18 and then Tua and the offense just kill clock
06:21 and make sure that the Patriots
06:22 have no chance of coming back.
06:23 How do you have this one going?
06:24 Are the Patriots gonna start a win two?
06:27 - I've got the Patriots pulling off the upset.
06:29 I mean, I imagine it's the upset.
06:31 I don't have the odds in front of me.
06:33 And a lot of this is because of that elite defense
06:36 we've talked about.
06:37 You know, the Miami offense,
06:38 I'm very curious to watch week one
06:39 against Brandon Staley's defense.
06:41 I imagine the New England coaches
06:42 are also interested in watching that
06:44 because that was a defense that really thwarted them
06:45 at the end of last season with their game plan.
06:48 And you saw a few defenses in the NFL try,
06:52 there were some different approaches,
06:53 also just a higher quality of defense.
06:55 They played the Niners, for example.
06:57 But the Dolphins offense,
06:58 which was such a buzzsaw through really 60, 70%
07:02 of the season with Tua was healthy,
07:04 even when he played in the final quarter of the season,
07:07 ran into some struggles.
07:09 And I think New England has both,
07:13 obviously the brilliant coaching, game planning,
07:15 and also the personnel to pull off
07:19 the sort of bespoke game plan
07:21 that we saw Miami run into a little bit down the stretch.
07:24 So for me, I think this,
07:26 I've got this as a little bit lower scoring than expected,
07:29 and I'm putting this win on the strength
07:31 of the Pat's defense.
07:33 - I think that's fair,
07:34 especially with all the additions that Dolphins have made.
07:36 On their defensive side of the ball,
07:37 no Jalen Ramsey to start the season,
07:39 but still plenty of talent on Cam Smith.
07:41 We both like him as well.
07:42 All right, now moving on to week three.
07:45 Jets last season were seven and 10,
07:46 fourth in the AFC East,
07:48 but a lot of things have changed since then.
07:50 They have this guy named Aaron Rodgers,
07:51 if you've heard of him, he's pretty talented.
07:53 I think he might change some things up a little bit.
07:55 The hope is in New York that they're gonna have more health
07:57 along their offensive line,
07:58 which would obviously go a huge way considering,
08:00 probably gonna be more of a run heavy team,
08:02 so Rodgers doesn't have to put the team on his shoulders.
08:04 The Patriots swept the Jets last season.
08:06 Again, very different circumstances.
08:08 The first game, the Patriots won 22 to 17 at MetLife,
08:12 winning Zach Wilson through three interceptions,
08:14 two to Devin McCourty, who I hope is enjoying retirement.
08:17 And the second game,
08:18 this is kind of a theme in this episode
08:20 where we kind of just bring up
08:21 how the Patriots had a really ugly game.
08:23 This was a 10 to three win,
08:25 where the only reason they pulled it out
08:26 was because Marcus Jones just got a gift from the gods,
08:29 returned a punt for a touchdown in the closing seconds.
08:32 It was a fun game, you know, for that one brief element,
08:35 but the rest of it was pretty tough.
08:36 But Aaron Rodgers,
08:38 it's two and one against New England since 2014.
08:40 Now, the one game,
08:42 this was probably my favorite loss
08:44 the Patriots have ever had in 2014,
08:45 where he and Tom Brady were just going at it,
08:48 like drive for drive, really fun game there.
08:50 Patriots couldn't pull it out.
08:52 But since then, the Patriots have managed to hold Rodgers.
08:54 He had 112.5 passer rating in that game.
08:57 They've held him to an 89 passer rating
08:59 in the last two meetings.
09:00 Obviously they beat him, I think it was in,
09:03 it was a few years ago, they beat him in Foxborough.
09:05 And then last year in Green Bay,
09:07 the overtime thriller where Bailey Zappi
09:09 took him into overtime.
09:11 But, you know, Belichick was saying,
09:12 "I'm not sure I'm gonna trust the young gun."
09:14 Gave it to Aaron Rodgers in overtime
09:16 and he managed to pull it out.
09:17 How do you think round one against the Jets is gonna go?
09:20 - Yeah, this is tough.
09:22 I ended up going with the Jets,
09:24 who I actually, I think,
09:26 when I was looking at their schedule,
09:28 I think might lose their first two games.
09:30 So it was a little bit of a back against the wall pick
09:34 for New York.
09:36 You know, when I thought about this one,
09:39 I think the Jets defense strikes me as
09:42 the exact kind of defense
09:45 that should give this New England offense troubles.
09:48 They're so fundamentally sound
09:50 against both the run and the pass,
09:52 ability to get pressure with four,
09:54 stop the rushing attack with light boxes,
09:57 elite cornerback play.
09:58 I think New England, you know,
10:01 which I expect to use a lot of 12 personnel,
10:03 could create a bit offensively with their tight ends
10:06 against this Jets safety group, linebackers.
10:10 But I think points are gonna be hard to come by.
10:12 And it just kind of felt like,
10:14 okay, Aaron Rodgers, desperation game.
10:17 You know, Garrett Wilson,
10:19 not sure anyone in New England
10:20 really matches up well with him,
10:22 but it could go either way.
10:24 - Yeah, that's a tough matchup.
10:26 'Cause you think, okay, is Gonzalez gonna cover Alan Lazard,
10:29 who is uncoverable in the second half because of his size,
10:31 or are you gonna put Gonzalez on Garrett Wilson,
10:34 who is clearly their number one receiver?
10:36 And it feels like, yeah, with that Jets defense,
10:38 I think the only weakness is really down the middle.
10:40 You're not trying to throw outside.
10:42 With that pass rush, you don't wanna hold onto the ball.
10:44 So it's gonna be a tough matchup, I agree.
10:46 I think they're probably gonna split
10:47 in those games personally.
10:48 All right, now we got week four with the Cowboys.
10:51 We're second in the NFC East last year
10:52 with a 12 and five record.
10:54 DAC is one and one against New England.
10:56 Now, to be fair, when he first played New England in 2019,
10:59 it was a rain game, kinda sloppy.
11:02 He had a 64.2 passer rating with an interception,
11:05 but boy, did he turn things around
11:07 when the Patriots and the Cowboys played.
11:08 And Max Ricciere and Gillette had 108.7 passer rating,
11:12 three touchdowns, just one interception.
11:15 It felt like the Patriots threw the kitchen sink at him.
11:17 They had disguises, they played different coverages.
11:19 You know, they were clearly afraid of his processing ability
11:22 and his accuracy.
11:23 It wasn't enough, the Cowboys wound up
11:25 pulling it out in overtime.
11:26 It was that deep over with CeeDee Lamb against Jalen Mills,
11:29 and then he let Jalen Mills know,
11:31 bye-bye, you can go to your locker room now.
11:33 We got this one wrapped up.
11:34 Do you think the Patriots are gonna win this one?
11:36 Because I think this is one of the toughest games
11:38 in the schedule, especially playing against old friends,
11:40 Stephon Gilmore and Brandon Cooks.
11:42 - Yeah, I don't.
11:43 I wanna be clear, Pat's fans,
11:45 you're gonna start winning some games.
11:46 So I know this is a tough start that I have projected,
11:49 but it's a very difficult schedule, first part of the year.
11:53 I think this Cowboys, honestly, the Patriots are very close,
11:57 but the Cowboys I have is having
11:58 the best defense in football.
12:00 I do not love the matchup of that pass rush
12:03 against this New England offensive line.
12:06 I do think New England can and will run the ball in this one
12:10 to try to mitigate that to some degree,
12:12 but I just think this Dallas defense is really, really deep,
12:17 really, really talented stars across the board.
12:21 And then offensively, I think by then,
12:25 we'll have a better sense of kind of what this passing attack
12:29 will look like under Mike McCarthy as a play caller,
12:31 but a very good one, two, three punch at wide receiver
12:35 in Dallas, I think could give,
12:38 it's the type of receiving group
12:39 that could give New England some trouble.
12:41 - Yeah, I think the only hope is you pray
12:43 that Dak has one of those games
12:44 or has a couple of still interceptions that keep you in it.
12:47 But hey, starting off slow is not the worst thing in the,
12:50 I'm sorry.
12:50 - It's happened before, yeah.
12:52 - Fingers crossed.
12:53 And hey, Patriots starting off
12:55 with their backs against the wall,
12:56 not the worst thing in the world,
12:57 just a little humility to start the schedule.
13:00 - Get ready for the NFL season
13:01 with incredible offers from FanDuel,
13:03 America's number one sports book.
13:05 Right now, new customers can bet $5

13:13 Plus all customers who bet $5 will get $100 off

13:20 Now is the best time to join FanDuel.
13:22 It absolutely is.
13:24 The app is easy to use and you can be on everything
13:26 from spreads to player props and more.
13:29 So visit fanduel.com/boston.
13:32 Kick off the NFL season with an offer you won't wanna miss.
13:35 FanDuel, official partner of the NFL.
13:39 - Well, let's see if they can turn it around
13:44 against New Orleans.
13:45 Now, this is another interesting one
13:47 because again, they're out of conference.
13:48 You wouldn't think they play very often,
13:50 but the Patriots actually played the Saints
13:52 only a couple of years ago.
13:53 They lost 28 to 13 to Jameis Winston-led team.
13:57 He had 110.8 rating and two touchdowns.
14:00 One was insane.
14:00 I think he like threw it off his back foot
14:02 in the back of the end zone.
14:03 Somebody just like went up and grabbed it.
14:05 That was a pretty wild one,
14:06 but they did manage to hold Alvin Kamara
14:08 to 3.7 yards per rush on 24 carries.
14:12 So I think you're gonna want a similar kind of game plan
14:14 this time around.
14:15 I'm not gonna pick on Mack in this show.
14:17 I was looking at his stats in a lot of these games
14:18 and they just don't look good,
14:20 which sometimes I think it's fair 'cause he struggled.
14:22 Other times it's just like, you know,
14:24 the system ran him.
14:24 He was either young or was dealing with a tough offense.
14:27 He had a touchdown and three interceptions in that game.
14:29 And then new Saints quarterback, Derrick Carr.
14:32 He is one in three against the Patriots.
14:35 Now his one win,
14:36 I think Patriots fans may remember this one.
14:38 Not gonna go too in depth
14:39 because it was an absolute nightmare.
14:41 Yeah, it was that late thriller in Vegas last year
14:44 where he threw a late touchdown
14:45 that I still contest was not a touchdown.
14:48 I think that was a poor call,
14:50 but I don't get paid to make those decisions.
14:51 So that doesn't matter.
14:52 And obviously the cluster fudge,
14:55 I don't know if I'm even allowed to swear on my own podcast,
14:58 but yeah, really bad ending to that game.
15:00 How do you think this one's gonna go?
15:02 - I've got New England winning this.
15:04 And earlier I talked about sort of the divisions
15:06 and how if New England was in another division,
15:08 I might pick them to win.
15:09 I think I'd probably pick them to win the NFC South,
15:11 scantily on strength of the defense.
15:15 Whereas the Saints will probably win the division
15:19 because it is very winnable.
15:21 But no, I think this is the type of team
15:23 that New England does match up well with.
15:25 They don't have a very good pass rush.
15:28 They have a lot of talented players in the secondary
15:31 and they've got to Mario Davis,
15:33 but I think New England will be able to scheme up
15:34 some offense against them.
15:36 And then on the other side of the football,
15:38 we'll see what the Saints offense looks like
15:41 by this point in the season.
15:45 But the team is so fragile.
15:47 They're pretty old.
15:48 They're not very deep at a lot of positions.
15:50 And I think more likely than not,
15:53 they're probably gonna look different at this point
15:55 than from how they look week one.
15:58 So I think New England could benefit from that.
16:01 - Yeah, I mentioned that ugly game
16:03 against the Raiders with Derek Carr.
16:05 Funny enough, the next week, they're going to Vegas.
16:07 They are going to play the Raiders who last year,
16:11 they again, lost to, I'm not gonna go into that one.
16:13 Mack didn't have a great game, 3.6 yards per attempt.
16:15 That's it.
16:16 All right, how do you think this one's gonna go?
16:17 Are they gonna get some retribution
16:19 against Josh McDaniels?
16:20 - Yeah, I'll be brief.
16:22 I got the Pats winning this one.
16:23 They're a better football team.
16:26 Significantly better defense.
16:27 I don't think this Raiders defense is very good.
16:31 Offensively, I think if Grappolo is healthy at this point,
16:36 he is a good fit for Josh McDaniels offense.
16:39 But I do not think that Bill Belichick
16:42 will have a hard time game planning for that offense.
16:45 - Do you think Jimmy's gonna be the quarterback by then?
16:47 Because I've heard some rumblings again.
16:49 I've been in my bubble,
16:49 but I heard Aiden O'Connell did pretty well.
16:52 Might be in the conversation.
16:53 - I think probably more likely than competition
16:56 is an injury issue.
16:57 But, and O'Connell didn't play very well
16:59 during the preseason,
17:00 but my pick would remain the same
17:02 if he was the quarterback.
17:04 - All right, week seven, the dreaded Buffalo Bills.
17:09 Won the AFC's last year, swept New England.
17:12 Although I will say,
17:14 I thought they were more competitive against Josh Allen
17:16 than they've been in recent years.
17:17 Allen's undefeated against the Pats in his last four games.
17:20 He's had a pass rating of at least 100
17:22 and at least two touchdowns in each of those games.
17:25 Patriots can usually run pretty well on the Bills.
17:27 The secondary, you know, with injuries, it kind of hurts.
17:30 Although they couldn't capitalize on it last season
17:32 on offense.
17:33 But I did think, again, this was kind of like that game
17:35 where they threw everything at Dak,
17:36 where it's disguises, you're playing a lot of cover too.
17:38 You're not doing what you really want to do.
17:40 You're really just,
17:41 this is where Belichick makes his money.
17:43 Or Steve or, you know, Brian or whoever's, you know,
17:45 cooking up these game plans these days.
17:48 How do you have this one going
17:49 and are they going to keep making progress
17:51 against Josh Allen?
17:52 Or are they going to run into a buzzsaw?
17:54 - I don't think it'll be a buzzsaw.
17:56 I think it'll be close.
17:57 I do have the Bills winning this one,
17:59 largely on the strength of Josh Allen.
18:02 I think, you know, I love this New England defense,
18:06 but I think he is the exact type of quarterback
18:10 that can challenge it
18:12 because of his ability to play under pressure.
18:15 You know, I think because of the amount,
18:20 the fact that he, as a rusher,
18:22 has such a devastating changeup,
18:24 even when the picture is changed on him
18:26 or you game plan perfectly
18:28 for what they're doing on offense,
18:30 he's just able to create on his own
18:32 in ways that are unpredictable.
18:34 And then defensively,
18:35 I think it's important that Von Miller will be probably,
18:38 well, more likely than not,
18:39 than be back by then,
18:41 which will significantly help their four-man rush.
18:45 - Yeah.
18:46 It always feels like every time they play,
18:47 Josh Allen just rolls out to his right
18:49 and throws some completely impossible pass to Dawson Knox.
18:53 Then they also got Dalton Kincaid.
18:54 So now there's two options
18:55 for him to just pick on the Patriots safeties,
18:57 who are good, but Josh Allen's Josh Allen.
19:00 All right, week eight, the Patriots are going to Miami.
19:03 It's better than being at the end of the year
19:05 where they've been playing in a bunch of cold weather games
19:07 and then you're just going to throw them
19:08 into the sweltering heat.
19:09 A little bit easier, but still Miami,
19:11 historically a horrendous place for the Patriots to play.
19:15 Do they turn their luck around this year
19:17 or is it going to be more of the same?
19:19 - So I got Miami winning this one,
19:20 which means there'll be splitting.
19:22 You know, the first game I thought maybe New England
19:26 game planning on defense.
19:28 Second one, my thought process was that
19:31 Miami might have developed a bit of a counter punch
19:34 by this point.
19:35 You know, one thing I didn't really talk about
19:37 the first time we talked about the Dolphins
19:38 was how much I do love the direction
19:41 that this defense is going in.
19:43 I really, really like the defensive line in particular.
19:47 And I think it's a defense that does match up well
19:49 with what the Pats plan to do offensively
19:52 because it's good run defense, they're very stout.
19:54 They don't have to allocate a lot of resources
19:56 to stop the run up front.
19:58 So I think that, I think both games will be
20:01 kind of lower scoring than people expect.
20:03 And I've got Miami winning the second time.
20:05 - Agreed, you mentioned that defensive line.
20:07 Zach Seeler on the all underrated team in my book.
20:09 I love to watch him play.
20:10 He doesn't get enough credit.
20:12 Watch out for him, although it's hard to notice him
20:14 when Christian Wilkins is just tearing things up.
20:17 Another team now for week nine,
20:19 the Patriots don't see very often, the Commanders.
20:22 Now, the last time they played,
20:23 the Commanders had a completely different name.
20:26 Glad they changed it.
20:27 It should have happened a long time ago,
20:29 but these are two very different teams.
20:30 Brady was on the Pats the last time they faced off.
20:33 New England blew out Washington 33 to seven back in 2019.
20:37 But again, Ron Rivera wasn't on the team.
20:39 These are very, very different.
20:41 Washington, different top to bottom.
20:43 And the Patriots, new quarterback, new offense,
20:45 bunch of new faces on defense.
20:47 How do you think this one's gonna go in Foxborough?
20:49 - Yeah, so I got this as a win for New England.
20:52 Sam Howell, rookie quarterback.
20:54 There's a lot I like about his game,
20:56 but he is a rookie quarterback,
20:58 or you know, second year quarterback,
20:59 who holds on to the football for a long time,
21:02 which is the exact type of quarterback
21:04 that the New England defenses
21:05 tend to put in a torture chamber.
21:07 So I could see them, you know,
21:09 turning him over a few times and benefiting as a result.
21:13 - Yeah, the Commanders have the one defensive front
21:15 that I'm more afraid of than the Eagles.
21:18 Like, I'm really hoping the Trenches can get it together
21:21 because they are just deep and absolutely terrifying.
21:25 All right, week 10.
21:26 Another team that's very different
21:28 from the last time the Pats saw them.
21:29 The Patriots blew out the Colts last season, 26 to three,
21:33 but the Colts had Sam Ellinger at quarterback.
21:36 I don't think he completed a pass or maybe like had one.
21:39 I should've pulled the stats up on that,
21:40 but I didn't want to pick on Sam.
21:41 It was a tough game for him.
21:43 Jonathan Taylor didn't play in that game,
21:45 but if he ends up playing for the Colts, we don't know.
21:48 That would not be good for the Patriots
21:49 'cause he ran for 170 yards
21:51 and a game-sealing touchdown against them.
21:53 It was kind of like a Jamal Charles game in 2014,
21:56 where it's not a lot of times
21:57 that the Patriots play a running back,
21:59 where I'm genuinely nervous.
22:01 And it's like, this guy's taking over
22:02 and there's nothing you can do to stop him.
22:03 Jonathan Taylor is one of those guys.
22:05 We'll see what happens.
22:06 And then it wasn't a great performance for Mac Jones,
22:08 but this was also before the offense
22:10 really found its footing.
22:11 I mean, I wouldn't say they found their footing ever,
22:13 but this was really when he was in his slump.
22:15 How do you see this one going
22:16 with Anthony Richardson under center?
22:19 - Yeah, you can kind of copy what pace,
22:20 what I said about rookie quarterbacks
22:21 and hold on to the football against this defense.
22:24 But I think also with the Colts,
22:26 unlike the Commanders,
22:28 not a very good defense this year by my estimation.
22:31 I think it's a good matchup for New England
22:35 on both sides of the ball.
22:37 - Like that one.
22:38 Week 11, bye week.
22:40 Take a breath.
22:43 And then we move right back on to week 12
22:45 against the dreaded New York Giants.
22:47 A whole lot of history here.
22:49 Daniel Jones has only played the Patriots once
22:52 and it did not go well.
22:53 He had a 35.2 passer rating,
22:55 one touchdown to three interceptions,
22:58 and they didn't really use his rushing ability.
22:59 He only had two carries for eight yards.
23:02 But on the other side of the ball,
23:03 things are one, Brian D'Abel also understands the Patriots
23:07 and clearly they're a pretty good match.
23:09 Daniel Jones needs to cut down on the turnovers,
23:10 be more consistent.
23:11 But with guys like Darren Waller, Jalen High,
23:14 they have a lot of guys who thrive in the slot,
23:16 but I think Brian D'Abel's smart enough
23:17 to make all that work.
23:19 But Wink, I think Patriots fans will remember
23:22 the last preseason, how Wink Martindale set a record
23:25 for the most blitzes in a preseason game,
23:27 when I'm pretty sure he tried to get Bailey Zappi killed.
23:31 The last time that the Patriots played Wink's defense
23:34 was when he was with the Ravens.
23:36 And the Patriots actually won 23 to 17.
23:39 They were led by Cam Newton,
23:40 but this was also during the COVID season,
23:43 everything was a little wonky.
23:44 And in Lamar Jackson's defense,
23:46 he had to deal with what I still think
23:48 was a Bill Belichick crafted monsoon
23:50 when he tried to come back in that game.
23:52 It was absolutely ridiculous,
23:54 the weather he had to deal with, he had no shot.
23:56 How do you think this is gonna go at MetLife?
23:58 - I think New England wins this one.
24:01 You know, again, I tend to like this Patriots defense
24:05 versus what I would describe as heavily schemed up offenses.
24:10 But really on the other side of the ball,
24:12 that's I think where this is a good matchup.
24:14 I do think the Giants defense will be better
24:16 than they were last year, but they were,
24:19 I think by a lot of metrics,
24:21 the worst run defense in the NFL.
24:23 They made some moves to shore that up,
24:26 bringing in Carrick A linebacker, some help on the inside.
24:30 But I think against a Patriots defense,
24:33 or offense, pardon me, that wants to run the ball
24:35 and throw to tight ends,
24:37 there's gonna be some matchup advantages
24:39 that actually favor New England.
24:41 - All right, so week 13, another quarterback
24:45 who's never won against Bill Belichick, Justin Herbert.
24:48 Now I love Justin Herbert, and frankly,
24:50 I feel bad whenever I bring up how he's performed
24:52 against Bill Belichick, but the numbers are the numbers.
24:55 He is 0-2, both times he was at home,
24:58 and he's at a passer rating below 70
25:00 with two interceptions in both games.
25:02 Now this is one where the Patriots were like,
25:04 "We're gonna play a lot of cover too,
25:05 'cause we're not trying to get the ball
25:06 thrown over our heads, we're not silly."
25:08 But also the Chargers defense is much different
25:10 than the last time they played, old friend JC Jackson.
25:13 Hopefully he'll be in the starting lineup by then.
25:15 I guess hopefully or not hopefully,
25:16 depending on what your thoughts are on JC Jackson.
25:19 But we saw how good this defense could be,
25:21 like you said, against the Dolphins.
25:22 They had a really good scheme,
25:24 managed to shut down that explosive passing attack.
25:26 How do you think this one's gonna go
25:27 with Justin Herbert making his first appearance
25:29 at Gillette Stadium?
25:30 - I'm giving this one to the Chargers.
25:33 It's really a bet on that Chargers offense
25:36 being improved, their new coordinator,
25:38 Carlin Moore, couple of new pieces.
25:40 Ideally, actually healthy offensive line,
25:43 although saying that out loud feels like
25:45 tempting fate with this team.
25:46 (laughing)
25:48 But yeah, if those things I just described come together,
25:53 this should be pretty high powered passing attack.
25:57 Now that said, I still have major questions
26:01 about the Chargers run defense.
26:02 And as I said, I do like New England's chances
26:05 against bad run defenses generally,
26:07 but I thought this one being kind of high scoring
26:10 and LA coming out on top 'cause of the quarterback.
26:13 - That's fair enough.
26:13 - Patriots have been able to run it at will,
26:15 but if the Chargers run defense can put the clamps
26:17 on a little bit better, could be a different outcome.
26:20 I think that's a very fair pick.
26:21 Now, week 14 at Steelers.
26:23 I think this was one that before the preseason,
26:26 I thought one thing and now I'm feeling
26:29 a little bit different.
26:30 And I don't know if you're on the same boat there
26:32 because it was one thing when like, you know,
26:35 Kenny Pickett, he didn't really know what to expect
26:38 from this season.
26:38 It wasn't great last season, had his flashes.
26:40 Obviously George Pickens is from another planet.
26:43 He's basically what everyone wanted Nikhil Harari to be
26:45 where she's like, yeah, throw him the ball.
26:46 He didn't have to be open.
26:47 He'll catch it.
26:48 It's fine.
26:49 The Patriots won 17-14 last year,
26:51 but that was with Mitch Trubisky under center.
26:53 And you know, that went how it went
26:54 because then Kenny Pickett ended up taking over.
26:57 And another notable one, Bill Belichick is nine and three
27:00 all time against Mike Tomlin.
27:03 How do you think it's gonna go this time?
27:04 Is Tomlin gonna maybe help eat?
27:06 Not even a squadron, I don't know if Bill Belichick
27:08 is gonna be around, but is he gonna help himself here?
27:10 - You know, this one where I also shade drive by,
27:14 like I went back and forth a little bit
27:16 and I think it could be the difference
27:17 between the Pats winning 10 or nine games.
27:19 And I ended up going with Pittsburgh
27:23 and it might be a bit of an overreaction
27:27 to the preseason, I'll concede.
27:28 I do feel like I'm kind of drinking
27:30 the Steelers Kool-Aid offensively, but defensively.
27:33 - Preseason's four.
27:34 - I mean, I know, right?
27:35 This pass rush looks to be quite terrifying indeed.
27:40 I just was looking at their depth chart
27:42 and I'm like, Marcus Golden is on this team?
27:44 Like they have like waves of guys
27:46 and I think that kind of is what's waited for me,
27:49 just New England against really good pass rushers
27:52 makes me a little nervous.
27:53 - Yeah, Herbig is looking like he's from another planet.
27:56 I mean, he has been absolutely crushed at this preseason.
27:59 Also, this is another one that's gonna,
28:00 I was gonna call it Heinz.
28:01 Do you know what it's called now?
28:03 I honestly, I don't remember.
28:05 - I don't either.
28:06 - No.
28:08 - Accusure, is that even a thing?
28:10 I don't know, I'm not gonna do that to anybody.
28:12 It's Heinz Field by all accounts.
28:15 All right, now, week 15 against the Kansas City Chiefs.
28:19 I feel like this is one that everyone kind of chalks up.
28:22 It's like, it's an easy win for the Chiefs,
28:24 but my favorite fact to bring out
28:26 is every time Bill Belichick has played Patrick Mahomes,
28:29 he's held him without a touchdown in one half of the game,
28:33 which I think is one of the wildest stats in football.
28:36 I had to like, I said this over and over,
28:38 I triple checked myself,
28:40 'cause I always think that I overlooked something,
28:42 but it's there.
28:43 So clearly, the game plans,
28:45 usually the Belichick says, "We're gonna man you up
28:47 "because we're gonna take away Travis Kelsey.
28:49 "And if anybody else is gonna beat us at the catch point,
28:52 "it is what it is."
28:52 But usually they have the man coverage defenders
28:54 in that basketball team kind of defense
28:56 where they can match up with anybody.
28:58 But Patrick Mahomes, two and two against Bill Belichick,
29:01 started O and two, two and O recently.
29:04 Although I, also Mahomes has 110 plus passer rating
29:07 in all but one of the games that was 2019
29:10 when Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham
29:12 were so close to pulling off an upset,
29:15 but simply could not keep the ball
29:16 into England's possession.
29:17 And then the box score made it look like
29:19 it was a really one-sided game.
29:20 That was one that flies under the radar,
29:22 but was a lot closer than I think people remember.
29:25 And that was also one Belichick,
29:27 oh yeah, I already said that one.
29:28 Go through my notes.
29:29 All right, yeah, so Belichick knows what to do
29:31 for at least one half of football against Patrick Mahomes.
29:33 It would be crazy to just assume
29:35 that's gonna happen again.
29:36 But given that that has been the relationship
29:38 and it's been more of a back and forth
29:39 and people may give it credit for,
29:41 how do you see it going this time?
29:43 - I still got the Chiefs.
29:44 I do think you made a really good point,
29:46 which is the Patriots are very unique in that
29:49 I think they have the types of unicorn players
29:52 in their secondary that actually allow them to game plan
29:55 against not just Travis Kelsey, but a Chiefs offense.
29:58 That's, it was very devastating last year
29:59 throwing out a 12 and 13 personnel.
30:02 Very few teams can match up with that
30:04 the way New England can.
30:06 But I also like some of the improvements
30:09 that Chiefs defense showed last year.
30:12 Hopefully Chris Jones is playing by then.
30:14 Otherwise I'm picking a lot of Chiefs games differently.
30:17 And yeah, there are very few games
30:20 where I'm gonna bet against Mahomes just to be blunt.
30:23 - That's totally fair.
30:23 In my predictions, I had this as a win for the Patriots
30:26 and I had the disclaimer, I get one favoritism pick.
30:30 And that was my one.
30:31 And if anybody wants to make fun of me,
30:32 they absolutely can.
30:33 It makes total sense.
30:34 Plus playing against Spags,
30:36 it's one thing if you play a Spags defense
30:37 in the first half of the season.
30:39 'Cause it's like, you know, he's kind of tinkering.
30:40 He's trying to figure out what they do well.
30:41 The second half, everything clicks in there a buzzsaw.
30:45 All right, week 16 in Denver.
30:49 Now Russ, actually low-key owns Bill Belichick.
30:54 And that's not what I think Patriots fans
30:55 are gonna like to hear, but it's true.
30:57 Now listen to this.
30:58 He has pass ratings.
30:59 Now this is from 2014, where as a rookie,
31:02 he beat Belichick when all the hype that week leading up
31:05 to it was that, oh, Belichick against rookie quarterback.
31:07 - Mad bro game from Richard Sherman.
31:09 - Yep, you mad?
31:10 Yes, ma'am.
31:12 Then the next time they played the Superbowl,
31:14 we all know how that turned out.
31:15 And then the other one, I think it was 2016,
31:18 where it was the last minute,
31:19 they threw it up to Gronk against Cam Chancellor incomplete.
31:23 I'm trying to remember what the last game was.
31:24 I can't, but anyway, Russ's pass rating
31:26 is against Bill Belichick in their four games.
31:28 133.7, 110.6, that was in the Superbowl.
31:33 It was his lowest pass rating
31:34 against Bill Belichick defense.
31:36 Third game was 124.6.
31:38 Fourth game was 132.1.
31:43 So it's not just that he's been good.
31:45 He's been like mad in levels of good.
31:48 And then Vance Joseph, when he was with the Cardinals,
31:51 lost last year, 27 to 13 against New England.
31:54 How is this one gonna go in the mile high city?
31:58 - I got New England here.
32:00 2014, '16, '18, point whatever,
32:06 Russ might've owned New England,
32:08 but that Russ is not walking through the door.
32:11 I think they'll be better with Peyton,
32:14 but I just still don't think this is
32:16 a super strong football team.
32:19 So I'll take the Pats.
32:22 - Think that's fair.
32:23 All right, so the Patriots are closing out
32:25 with two division rivals,
32:27 which that's kind of brutal to be honest,
32:29 especially considering who they are.
32:31 First, week 17, they're going to Buffalo.
32:33 Now I will say, I've been to Buffalo for a Pats game.
32:37 I was wearing a Brady jersey
32:38 and didn't think I was gonna make it out alive.
32:40 I was really feeling myself that week,
32:42 but I will say they were actually amazing.
32:44 They're super nice.
32:45 They're very intimidating, but they're very nice.
32:47 And by halftime, I was deaf and I had a massive headache
32:50 because that fan base don't F around.
32:52 They are fantastic.
32:54 How do you think this one's gonna go in Buffalo?
32:57 - I gave this one to Buffalo too.
32:59 I had New England splitting the other two divisional games.
33:02 I guess, spoiler alert, when we get to the jet one.
33:05 But yeah, I just,
33:08 I kind of think people are weirdly sleeping on Buffalo too.
33:11 I'm sure the betting favors twin divisions,
33:15 so that's kind of,
33:16 it might sound a little bit like I'm straw manning it,
33:19 but I do think Josh Allen played the second half
33:24 of last season pretty injured.
33:26 And if he's healthy, and he seems to be healthy,
33:29 you know, I think a lot of people are gonna be reminded
33:33 of how good he is this year.
33:35 - Yeah, I was looking back at Allen's, like,
33:37 not good throws against the Patriots.
33:39 A lot of them you could probably attribute
33:41 to the elbow injury,
33:41 because we saw his short accuracy was kind of shot.
33:44 And a lot of them, it's just like, all right, yeah,
33:46 he's just not healthy right now.
33:49 We'll see what he can do next season.
33:50 Hopefully he reverts a little bit
33:51 and starts turning the ball over.
33:52 I say that as someone who follows the Patriots,
33:54 but I also love Josh Allen as a person,
33:56 and I think he's an amazing football player.
33:57 So we'll see what happens there.
33:59 All right, Patriots.
34:01 Hopefully it's not the season finale,
34:04 but it will be the regular season finale
34:06 at home against the New York Jets.
34:09 We kind of already teased it,
34:10 but what's gonna happen in round two
34:12 against Aaron Rodgers and company?
34:13 - Yeah, so this one I've got New England winning.
34:17 I think kind of either they could split either of them
34:20 in either order.
34:21 I'm a little bit, I mean,
34:24 the truth is every offensive line in this division
34:27 has some issues, but with otherwise
34:31 very strong football teams.
34:32 But I think given the Jets offensive line is not deep,
34:36 starting left tackle, 38,
34:39 or I think he's actually older than 38,
34:40 Dwayne Brown coming off of surgery.
34:43 They get started with Kai Beckton in the right tackle.
34:45 We'll see how that goes.
34:46 But I feel like at the end of the season,
34:49 we could see some attrition and pass protection
34:51 that'll lean towards New England having an advantage.
34:56 I also think it's quite possible
34:58 that New England's offense looks better
35:00 at the end of the year than they do at the beginning.
35:02 So yeah, I'll give them this one
35:06 with a victory against Aaron Rodgers.
35:08 Maybe it keeps him from going to the playoffs, who knows?
35:11 - Yeah, I'm hoping this isn't just a moral victory
35:14 for New England.
35:14 In terms of the division, I agreed.
35:16 I had them getting swept by Buffalo.
35:17 I had them splitting with their other division rivals.
35:21 And so overall, you got them at nine and eight.
35:25 I think that is completely reasonable.
35:27 I had them in my predictions with 12 wins,
35:29 which I already knew, like I said, the Chiefs won.
35:31 The Chiefs was a favoritism pick.
35:33 I said that.
35:34 I think realistically, especially now,
35:36 like things have changed,
35:37 I'd probably put them closer to nine wins
35:38 if I'm being totally honest, maybe 10.
35:40 - I'd say 10 though.
35:41 Like, you know, I was very itchy on the Steelers
35:43 and the Chargers and 10, it's totally plausible.
35:48 And I definitely think that this is a team
35:50 that will be relevant at the end of the year.
35:53 - Yeah, I honestly kind of want to take my 12 wins back.
35:55 Even with the favoritism pick, like I knew it was optimistic.
35:58 I was like fresh on the beat.
36:00 I was excited, but you know what?
36:02 Again, this is why I go outside of my bubble
36:04 so I can get realistic takes.
36:05 Before you get out of here,
36:06 I meant to ask this in the beginning, but I got excited.
36:08 I need to know what your takes are
36:10 because when we're filming this, literally an hour ago,
36:12 the Patriots claimed Matt Corral off of Wieners.
36:15 What are your thoughts on that?
36:16 'Cause now they actually have a backup quarterback
36:18 on the roster.
36:19 - Yeah, which was a big mystery.
36:20 What was gonna be, were they really gonna try to just,
36:23 you know, elevate Zappi for the first three weeks
36:25 and hope no one else claimed him?
36:25 It was kind of odd.
36:27 I thought it was interesting.
36:29 You know, I thought back to my pre-draft projections
36:34 of Corral, 'cause candidly,
36:35 I haven't thought about him since then.
36:38 And you know, in college, he's got a live arm.
36:42 He's got some mobility to him.
36:44 Obviously there was the injury
36:45 that I think did enter into the draft.
36:47 That offense that they ran in college,
36:51 and this is what I think I quote Tuiji about,
36:53 was very, very college.
36:56 Spread 'em out, extremely RPO heavy.
36:59 And that was kind of where my mind went to
37:01 with the signing, which is,
37:03 you and I talked about this on the Division Preview podcast
37:06 on the Meeting Com show featuring Lenny.
37:07 Go check it out.
37:08 About how we both wanted and expected New England
37:12 to lean heavily into RPOs
37:13 and take advantage of Mac Jones' skillset.
37:16 We've seen some of that during the preseason.
37:18 And I have to think, you know,
37:21 some of this is obviously because of Zappi's struggles
37:23 during the preseason,
37:24 but also I imagine that Bill O'Brien looked at Corral
37:29 and saw a quarterback who might be a little bit more similar
37:33 to Mac Jones in some ways
37:35 than some of the other veterans out there,
37:37 or Bailey Zappi, because of that shared DNA from college.
37:40 So, you know, you never wanna read too much
37:43 into signing as a backups or whatnot,
37:47 but that was kind of my interpretation.
37:49 Okay, maybe, you know,
37:50 that he saw him run that RPO heavy attack,
37:53 spread attack in college.
37:55 Maybe he can see it translating
37:57 if he has to fill in for Mac Jones.
37:59 - Yeah, I remember I was working at NextGen
38:01 when he was in his draft process,
38:02 and we were like filling in all the information
38:04 for like, all right, give us three stats,
38:05 key stats or whatever.
38:07 I looked at his RPO numbers.
38:07 I was like, damn,
38:09 this is gonna be a tough transition to the NFL.
38:11 I got to see some of his preseason tape from this year
38:14 that actually dialed way back.
38:15 He had like one RPO throw all preseason.
38:18 Showed some actually good processing.
38:19 I was surprised, like he's going through his reads.
38:22 He's pulling in what he needs to.
38:23 - Not gonna lie, I turned off the Panthers games.
38:25 - I would have been shocked if anybody had,
38:29 who isn't a Panthers fan, was like, oh yeah, no,
38:31 I actually know quite a bit
38:32 about Matt Corral's preseason performance.
38:35 Thank you so much, Mina.
38:36 Appreciate your insights.
38:37 It was just fantastic as expected.
38:40 For anybody who's like been living in Iceland or something
38:42 and hasn't had any access to technology,
38:45 where can people find you?
38:46 And please tell people if you got any work coming out,
38:49 you know I'll already be on top of it.
38:51 - Yeah, thank you.
38:52 Yeah, I'm on ESPN on NFL Live three days a week,
38:56 around the horn, first take, stuff like that.
38:58 But as we've been talking about,
39:00 if you're a fan of this show,
39:01 I do talk about the Patriots a fair amount on my podcast.
39:04 I feel like I talk about the Patriots defense too much
39:06 on my podcast.
39:07 We did just do an all underrated team.
39:11 And I think both on offense,
39:14 Ramond Drey Stevenson made the team
39:15 and on defense, of course, my beloved Kyle Duggar.
39:18 But I could have picked like,
39:20 I actually kind of, I said Judon, which is not fair
39:23 because he's been in Pro Bowls and stuff.
39:26 But I do think he's an underrated player.
39:28 So I threw Judon into the mix as well.
39:30 But I love talking about the Patriots defense.
39:32 So if you're a Patriots fan,
39:35 you should definitely check it out.
39:36 - It's that Patriots effect where you can make a Pro Bowl,
39:38 but there will probably still be a decent amount of people
39:40 who have no idea who you are.
39:42 Yeah, of course, fantastic work, Mina.
39:44 Thank you so much.
39:46 Thank you all for tuning in.
39:48 Take care of yourselves, take care of each other,
39:50 and we will see you next time.
