00:00 It looked like you had a game plan that your players executed.
00:05 Yeah, we did to be fair and great credit to the players for that.
00:13 We knew it was going to be the type of game that it was.
00:20 You don't come here to plan to dominate possession and to create chance after chance, but you
00:27 do come here knowing that if you do certain things well that you can create chances, you
00:31 can keep a clean sheet.
00:33 As you said in the question, that's how it unfolded.
00:39 I think on the back of what happened last week at United, where we all saw how we were
00:42 treated there and some decent things in the Arsenal game, although Arsenal are a brilliant
00:47 team in the first opening game of the season, for the guys to continue to believe in what
00:52 it takes to win a game like today, they deserve a lot of credit.
00:57 Like I said, we were good for the clean sheet and we've shown...
01:01 I thought we missed the chance of the half in the first half off the set piece with Thi,
01:05 the guy that we probably wanted it to fall to.
01:09 We knew we were going to be a threat there and also on dangerous fast attacks as well.
01:13 If you look at how tactically well we were set up when we won the ball, and then to have
01:18 that technical and athletic ability and put it together in creating and scoring the goal,
01:24 Thi obviously with the assist and Anthony's brilliant finish, is something that we talked
01:28 about how we could hurt Chelsea.
01:31 Then after that, it was just about keeping the clean sheet and there's no shame in that.
01:38 Got the long overdue away result, which I think the players deserve and definitely the
01:43 supporters.
01:44 They've made noise like that when things have been the opposite in games.
01:51 I'm just so pleased going into the international break that they can get back on the motorway
01:56 and have something to sing about and shout about because they deserve it.
02:00 Steve, it's been 28 years since Forrest won here, so I don't suppose you remember?
02:05 No, if I'm being honest.
02:08 I mean, there's a lot of things like that, isn't there, because of our time out of the
02:13 Premier League.
02:14 We had a decent performance last season here and went with a fairly similar team, to be
02:19 honest, obviously a couple of changes and a similar plan.
02:22 I know they've changed personnel a lot and obviously manager, etc, etc, but we felt that
02:27 was the way.
02:28 It's a huge result.
02:30 I think I spoke quite openly after being able to stay in the league last year, which is
02:35 always the main objective for a promoted team.
02:38 I talked about staying in the league, giving us an opportunity to grow and grow every part
02:47 of the club, but from my point of view, the level of the team, the strength and depth
02:51 of the squad, but also how we play and the playing style, because you have to sacrifice
02:55 some things, there's no doubt about that.
02:57 I learned quickly as a coach that way.
02:59 But I think results like today really help that momentum and that process and we've really
03:03 got to hone in on that now and use it to our advantage.
03:08 What's brilliant about our group is that they never really get too high or too low.
03:13 I know we'll all break for a little bit now because of the international break, but I
03:18 know the guys will really reflect on the things they did well today and the stuff to improve
03:22 on and be determined to try and have more days like today.
03:28 Days like today really help.
03:29 Is your only regret wearing a jumper?
03:31 Honestly, the biggest school-buy error of the day is on me.
03:35 I completely misread the weather and hence the towel.
03:41 Well, also, I think we scored and we weren't conceding and I thought, "I'm not letting
03:46 go of this towel."
03:48 So I kept it all game.
03:50 But yeah, I'm sweating my balls off to be honest.
03:55 Sorry if I maybe shouldn't use that, but I completely misread it.
03:58 What a great finish from Anthony.
04:00 Yeah, he's a good finisher Anthony to be fair.
04:02 He's a player that I get asked about quite a lot because he's a very young player and
04:06 he's fairly high profile and coming from United and us, the owner, invested in him like we
04:11 did and we want players like that in the squad who are young and hungry where we know we
04:15 can grow them.
04:16 He will become a really good player.
04:20 He is already, but he'll become a really important player for us and that's just a process.
04:24 And again, like I said, days like today will help him as well.
04:29 What we've noticed about him in training is that he's a really competent finisher and
04:36 Ty has obviously been scoring regularly for us, but I think you need other attacking players
04:40 that look like they can score a goal as well and I really believe that Anthony has that.
04:43 Chelsea had quite a young side out which is probably quite unusual at this level.
04:48 Is that something that you thought you could maybe play on a little bit?
04:52 We felt we could dominate Jules.
04:55 We felt like on the set you see the chance that Ty would miss.
04:58 We felt that if we got certain things right off set pieces that that could happen.
05:07 But I don't think you get to this club and this level if you're not a competitor and
05:14 you need to be the whole package to play here.
05:18 I think that's a non-negotiable anyway really in a game is to compete and to try and get
05:23 the better of the guy in front of you.
05:26 But at the same time they're full of quality and they're full of everything really that
05:30 you want in a team and to see how we stood up to that today and the desire and the resolve
05:35 and the decision making and the quality we showed at times is really good.
05:39 So I haven't thought about that too much because I was thinking about our own guys and my own
05:43 guys but at the same time the mental challenge of the game I thought we were excellent at.
05:50 Did you see the fans at work?
05:59 Yeah I think definitely that and also the frustrations.
06:02 There was a really angry dressing room last week at Old Trafford but also it was quite
06:11 a motivated dressing room as well because knowing that we'd done more than enough in
06:15 the game to get the result that we deserved even if it was a draw and those things that
06:22 went against us.
06:24 So we've really taken that into the week.
06:26 The guys and the guys spoke quite passionately in the dressing room after the game and I
06:29 reminded them of what some of them said in the build up to this one and fair play to
06:34 them they took it into today.
06:36 How much time do you spend at the training ground and how much of the work you do is
06:46 on the defensive organisation?
06:47 I think you sort of build training around three things.
06:51 How we want to play in any game and some of our tactical repetitions and what we believe
06:56 in which is something that we're growing and evolving.
06:58 You have to think about preparing for the next game so that's when the opponent comes
07:01 in and we're a big believer in individual development as well and individual programmes
07:05 so that's the sort of process that we follow.
07:09 There's always context to a game but I would say what we've sort of, we've had a lot of
07:18 culture meetings this year so far and talked about how we grow and one of the things I
07:22 think we all agreed on is that if we want to get results like today, if we want to get
07:27 more points, if we want to grow which is easy said and done and we've got to earn the right
07:31 to do that is it comes from within, it comes internal so most of our planning, our thinking
07:37 and our motivation is coming from within.
07:41 Of course you have to talk about Chelsea today and Sterling and Jackson and all them sort
07:45 of things, of course you're doing some of the things that they're doing but really I
07:49 think what we've learnt is if we want to succeed in a game it's what we do and I think that
07:54 really was the core of the performance and the result today was about us.
07:59 Yeah, I mean we've just, thanks for bringing that up John because he's been incredible.
08:13 I personally have known what was going on before it came to public and he's put himself
08:22 second for his family, for the football club, I think the football club has helped him in
08:26 terms of giving him a bit of a release.
08:29 Guys just showed him a huge amount of respect in the dressing room after and what he's been
08:33 through and I cannot speak highly enough of the man that he's been over the last week
08:40 or so.
08:42 So I know how important today will be for him and it will give him and his family some
08:50 respite because nothing can really make what happened any better but at least it gives
08:57 them some nice feelings for a short while and like I said I can't speak highly enough
09:03 of Joe and what he's been through and his family and like I said a lot of that result
09:07 today was for them.
09:10 Thanks John.
09:11 Yeah Paul.
09:12 You mentioned Joe there, we saw Brennan Johnson's salt, you've still got Ryan Yates as well,
09:18 how important is it to have those homegrown players around?
09:22 Yeah you'll know that Paul as well because you cover us, I think everyone loves a local
09:30 homegrown player, sometimes they get the flack as well easier so it can come a little bit
09:36 at a cost as well but yeah you always want people in the dressing room that can talk
09:40 about the local community and the city and give some local knowledge if you like and
09:49 history and we've lost one obviously but we've still got a couple in the dressing room that
09:59 offer us and that's what we've got now in the dressing room, a real variety of everything
10:04 to be honest in terms of nationalities, of age.
10:08 So typical Premier League squad if you like but I think part of that mix has to be some
10:14 local soul and them two guys give that to us as well as some of the staff.
10:22 Is it a little bit frustrating that the system's weighted so that it almost makes sense for
10:27 us to start to sell?
10:28 Do you know what Paul, I don't really understand it all.
10:32 I know that we have to live in the parameters of financial fair play etc etc but we as a
10:41 coaching group trust the club in terms of what they need to do or we need to do and
10:46 just focus on coaching and trying to prepare the team and taking the responsibility on
10:51 that so I know that got brought up in the pre-match press conference but I'm no expert
10:59 on it but what I do know is you have to respect it and if you said that certain things help
11:04 the club then you have to go with it.
11:09 You had quite a busy deadline day for it, how do you see your squad now?
11:18 Like I said before, we want to grow as a club and staying in the league last year has given
11:26 us an opportunity to do that in every aspect including the level of the team, the level
11:34 of player, the strength and depth and the style because you have to be able to do everything
11:41 really in the Premier League to win games so that's what we've done.
11:49 Great support from the owner which is what he's always done and it's allowed us now to
11:56 give us the opportunity to try and do that so it's on us.
12:00 We've got to really think now how we want the team to look, I think we have a possibility
12:04 now to play a variety of formations, we've played with a back three and today I think
12:09 that was the right plan, one or two other games maybe it wasn't the right thing but
12:12 we felt that we had to but it's just given us good variety now to become a real flexible
12:18 team in a number of ways and hopefully we can make some good decisions in how that looks
12:23 from game to game.
12:24 Thank you very much.
12:26 Safe journey.
12:28 Thank you.
12:31 Thank you.
12:33 Thank you.
12:35 Thank you.
12:37 Thank you.
12:39 Thank you.
12:41 Thank you.
12:43 Thank you.
12:45 Thank you.
12:47 Thank you.
12:49 Thank you.
12:51 Thank you.
12:53 Thank you.
12:55 Thank you.
12:57 Thank you.
12:59 Thank you.
