00:06 and passion into this.

00:07 We're going to need a real pirate ship

00:09 or we'll have to straw hat crew.

00:11 Oda sensei has infinite ideas, making the manga still

00:15 so popular after so many years.

00:18 It's such an expansive world that people

00:21 are absolutely die hard for.

00:24 Getting a chance to bring that story to life,

00:27 it's absolutely amazing.

00:29 Matt, the show runner, he's a super fan.

00:31 Who better to make an adaptation than a super fan?

00:35 Action.

00:36 I've been a massive fan of one piece for years and years.

00:39 Having a built in fan base is a phenomenal thing.

00:42 And that also comes with a lot of responsibility

00:45 to get it right.

00:47 With every aspect of this, we use the manga

00:50 created by Oda sensei, his designs.

00:53 That's always our North Star.

00:54 The series has been running for 25 years.

00:56 And we know a lot about these characters

00:58 and about the world.

01:00 So it's given us the opportunity to throw in a lot

01:02 of Easter eggs for fans.

01:04 Let's go.

01:05 Right.

01:05 It's a really tricky balancing act,

01:07 trying to figure out what you're going to put in

01:09 and what you're going to leave out.

01:11 The hardest part was finding the right story

01:13 arcs and emotional arcs for characters

01:15 that would make for a wonderful season of television.

01:18 I don't want to be a marine.

01:20 I'm a pirate.

01:21 A big challenge was figuring out how to include backstory.

01:24 These backstories are all in the manga.

01:26 And we made a decision early on to parcel it out and tie

01:29 it into present day story.

01:31 We went by Oda-san's SBS chapter notes,

01:34 where he answers fan questions at the end

01:36 of chapters in the manga.

01:37 It's full of character backstories

01:39 and birthdates and heights.

01:40 These are so good.

01:41 Their favorite foods and things like that.

01:42 So we scoured those and thought that brought

01:44 a lot of wonderful emotional grounding with the characters.

01:47 What's been really great is Oda sensei and his team

01:50 have been with us the entire time.

01:52 Getting to talk with him is one of my favorite experiences

01:55 about this.

01:55 And that collaboration, I think, has

01:58 birthed something really special.

02:00 Hey, Sorrow, what you going to wear?

02:02 Something black.

02:05 The most challenging thing, translating the page

02:08 to the screen, was bringing the color and the life

02:11 into our characters without it looking like a cosplay.

02:15 The manga's black and white.

02:16 And so Oda's Color Walk became our Bible.

02:19 Color Walk gave us a very unique opportunity

02:22 to see the Straw Hat characters in different environments,

02:26 in different costumes.

02:27 It gave me the opportunity to introduce texture

02:30 and tailoring without in any way compromising

02:34 the look of the manga.

02:35 Our costume design is absolutely incredible.

02:38 We have a lot of nods to things ultimate fans would know.

02:43 One of the things that we thought

02:44 would make the show feel more real

02:45 is if we did as much as we could in camera.

02:47 It was a conscious choice to use prosthetics

02:49 as much as possible, particularly on the fishmen.

02:52 With prosthetics, one of the trickiest things

02:54 was to try and keep all the designs as close as possible

02:57 to honor Mr. Oda's work and then bring something

02:59 to screen that looks like it could live in the real world.

03:03 It's trying to find the middle ground between both

03:05 of the mediums.

03:06 And when we do have an idea to tweak or change something,

03:09 it's always a conversation with Oda sensei and his team.

03:12 Snail Phone being a perfect example,

03:13 we did snail phones that you have in the manga.

03:16 And then the prop crew came up with tiny snail phones

03:18 that fit in your ear like a Bluetooth.

03:19 Props then designed a snail megaphone

03:21 that amplifies the voice across the water.

03:23 Lower your sails and submit to my authority.

03:26 The attention to detail that everyone has

03:29 and just the talent of our individual departments,

03:31 it's incredible.

03:32 I think we were really successful in being

03:34 able to bring One Piece into a new medium

03:36 and show just how special it is and why so many people

03:39 all over the world love this series so much.

03:41 To the best crew sailing on the sea, and to our victory!

03:48 It's been a pleasure to be a part of this journey.

03:50 It's such a creative world, so many interesting characters.

03:54 I was truly overwhelmed when I saw it.

03:56 And I can't wait for the fans to see it too.

03:58 You're my captain, Luffy, from now until the end.

04:03 The spirit of One Piece is so strong in this.

04:07 It is such a privilege to work on this show

04:10 for something really wonderful and what Oda-san has created.

04:12 Truly, this is his sandbox, and we're just playing in it.
