  • last year
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou discusses the disappointing outcome to tonight Carabao Cup match.

With no European football the line up he decided on tonight was to test and give players the opportunity on the pitch who deserve to be on there.

00:00 How does it feel to be knocked out of the cup?
00:15 Obviously disappointed with the outcome, getting knocked out of the cup. We weren't at our
00:28 obviously flawed best particularly early on, which is not surprising considering the amount
00:36 of changes I've made, the fact that the boys are the players tonight. It's the first start
00:40 for the season. So we lacked a little bit of cohesion, fluency. I really like the way
00:47 we hung in there. There's many different ways that you kind of grow as a team and I thought
00:54 we showed some real character tonight and personality to hang in there. I thought second
00:57 half we had our moments to kind of maybe go on and win it. But ultimately we weren't able
01:07 to get over the line and you lose on penalties.
01:11 Can you talk us through the team's reaction and why you made so many changes? I guess
01:17 with no European football, this is even more of a case that the cup should have been in
01:23 your priority. It is my priority, but like you say there's no European football. So how
01:28 am I going to find out about our players? What opportunity would I have to do that other
01:33 than a game? They're all Tottenham players. They're all part of our club. Like I said
01:42 in the week, we put out a line-up tonight that will hopefully give us energy and we
01:47 just weren't able to get over the line. But that doesn't mean that the cup or any game
01:52 is not a priority for us. But from my perspective, we're very much at the discovery stage. So
02:01 I need to find out. We need to give players the opportunity to contribute because that's
02:08 why they're here. They're not here just to make up the numbers. A lot of them have been
02:14 working hard at training and we deserve an opportunity to go out there and play to them.
02:21 How much of an issue is it now that you won't be able to give those players minutes?
02:27 Well at least they've had some. So if we need them over the next two or three weeks, we've
02:34 got the window, we can do some extra work with them in terms of fitness. But that's
02:39 the reality of it. We're going to need to rely on these guys, not just them, but whenever
02:49 we get some disruptions along the way, which inevitably happen, whether that's injuries
02:53 or players coming in and out. Tonight was an opportunity to get some game time into
02:58 some guys as you said because it's going to be difficult moving forward.
03:00 Does that change anything with the size of the squad you want to have?
03:10 No, not really. I think the size of the squad, in my mind, is the same as it's always been.
03:17 We want to have a squad that's resilient enough to grow and be competitive in a tough Premier
03:24 League season.
03:25 What was it about Charles Sturgeon, was he really good for his confidence?
03:34 I think he got a bit of a knock. I guess because everyone's been talking about it, it's great
03:40 for him to score a goal like. I think he's played better for us in the other games. I'm
03:47 still looking at it. I get why other people look at that. I understand that. But for me,
03:51 it's about contributing to our football, how we play. I thought we gave away the ball a
03:57 little bit too much tonight. Not just him, there were a few players in that boat. It's
04:02 an important part of our game. That's the stuff that I want Richie to keep working on
04:05 and improving. I think the goals will come. I think the way we play, our strikers, our
04:11 attacking players, all our players will get opportunities to score. To me, it's more about
04:15 the overall game. It's much more important at this stage.
04:18 Do you think you'd like more players to come in during the next few days?
04:30 I think my views around that haven't really changed. We need to trim the squad and get
04:43 to a more manageable state and see what's available for us to then bring in players
04:52 to strengthen the squad in a couple of areas I think we may need.
04:56 You said you were in discovery, did you learn more tonight about who you can and can't rely
05:02 on going forward?
05:03 I wouldn't say can't rely on. That's a bit harsh for me to measure somebody when you're
05:09 doing that. I like the way we hung in there. That's going to be important for us. There's
05:17 some character and resilience shown amongst the guys that I think is going to be needed
05:22 moving forward just amongst the group. We've come away in a cup game to Premier League
05:29 side and lost on penalties. If we'd lost 4-0 or got blown away then maybe there'd be a
05:36 different discussion to be had. If we'd won on penalties would my views be different right
05:43 now? No, it'd be exactly the same. It's not really measured by the outcome, it's more
05:48 measured by the whole experience of us seeing the guys out there, how much they're understanding
05:59 our football. I thought there were some good moments and there were some moments we still
06:03 need to improve on.
06:04 Did your players have difficulty picking each other out in your cappuccino away trip?
06:14 I struggle to follow them in my peripheral vision. There were a lot of misplaced passes
06:19 in the first half. I wonder whether the natural visibility of the shirt was an issue?
06:27 I don't know. Is the real answer to that genuine question? That's my genuine answer. I'm not
06:35 really sure. I don't think it would have played a massive part. I think some of it is just
06:41 like I said, in a team function when there isn't familiarity there, guys who haven't
06:49 played with each other in over two or three games, there's not going to be the fluency
06:54 there that we've seen. That's understandable. But again, that's part of the process of where
07:02 we're at at the moment. We need to find out about our players, find out about the group
07:10 and our character and our personality. I don't know, maybe we need to check our colour matching
07:22 capabilities on our cappuccino.
07:26 How was Dane Scarlett's first performance this season? What did he make of his performance
07:32 and is he your intention to keep him at the club?
07:36 He was bright when he came on. He's been really good for us in training. He's working really
07:42 hard. I'll sit down over the next couple of days with Dane and chart a way forward for
07:49 him. I really think he's definitely got a future at our club. I really like his attributes
07:55 as a striker. It's always a balance with young players. Will he get enough game time? Because
08:01 for him that's the next stage of development is to play. He played a fair few games last
08:08 year but I think he's actually improved as a player since then. I'll make a decision
08:14 over the next couple of days. I'll sit down with him but I'll certainly see him as a top
08:20 number player. A lot of that will depend on what else happens over the next two or three
08:26 days.
08:26 Good. Thank you very much.
08:27 Thank you.
