00:00 Hello everyone, welcome to the final installation of putting Dr. G on the spot in the month
00:06 of August, talking about influences of testosterone on men.
00:11 And this week, we're going to discuss the influence of testosterone on risk-taking behavior
00:17 and how is it affecting some men.
00:25 So let's look at risk-taking behavior.
00:29 In fact, testosterone has always been incriminated for risk-taking behavior.
00:35 For example, in the 1960s, when men who are involved in sexual health crimes such as rape,
00:42 and then are always incriminated and also have them castrated so that they remove their
00:49 source of testosterone production, which is their testicles.
00:53 Obviously, these days and age, we don't do that anymore.
00:57 And then of course, in animal study, we still show that there is a correlation between testosterone
01:03 and risk-taking behavior.
01:05 How is that measured anyway?
01:08 The simplest form of measuring risk-taking behavior is something called Iowa gambling
01:14 test.
01:15 Essentially, this is looking at men and women in their risk-taking behavior when they are
01:23 gambling or they are making financial decisions, i.e. if your testosterone is high, you are
01:28 more daring in gambling.
01:30 There is a correlation between the higher than normal level of testosterone that will
01:37 result in this behavior.
01:40 Will it also translate to other behavior?
01:42 In fact, it will have been looked at other things like addiction.
01:46 So when you're taking more risk behavior and also other things like fast car driving and
01:52 other risk behaviors.
01:54 However, when it comes to risk-taking behaviors that you don't take protection, for example,
02:00 putting yourself and your loved one at risk of getting sexually transmitted infection
02:05 or going all the way that you end up having unwanted pregnancy, the answer is there is
02:12 no real study.
02:14 In fact, there is no real study that actually prove that men with higher testosterone perhaps
02:21 will engage in more risky sexual behavior.
02:24 However, naturally, if you correlate that with the gambling possibility, the risk-taking
02:31 behavior in financial decisions, risk-taking behavior in addiction, you probably can translate
02:37 that to risk-taking behavior in sexual health.
02:42 For the first week of September, we're going to actually focus on various infections that
02:48 happens in men.
02:50 And the first one we're going to talk about is a type of sexually transmitted infection.
02:55 The commonest type of sexually transmitted infection actually is chlamydia.
03:00 So if you're interested or your friend is interested in finding out more about chlamydia
03:05 infection, then stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
