00:00 winning actress Nadine Lustre and esteemed director Mikael Red are working on a new horror film.
00:05 Nocturno is their second project together following last year's Metro Manila Film
00:09 Festival Best Picture, The Leader. I got to speak with Nadine who recently won the Best Actress
00:15 Award at the Filipino Academy of Movie and Art Sciences or FAMAS Awards and she told me
00:21 how excited she is about this new film and what her second FAMAS Best Actress wins.
00:28 I'm just really happy that you know my comeback project got recognized and my work got recognized
00:35 as well so I still can't believe it until now. I was gonna ask you, I was gonna ask you what
00:40 does it feel or what does this win, Best Actress mean to you now? Okay you already got the first one
00:46 in 2019, Best Actress for FAMAS and now you got it again but of course you're much older,
00:52 different type of film, you're in a different place so what does this win mean to you now?
00:59 I think to me this this one is just a reminder or kind of like something that tells me that I'm
01:06 doing the right thing, that I'm going on the right direction because when I did Greed, so the project
01:12 that I got the award for is for Greed, it's directed by Dereck Yam Laranas and it's kind of
01:19 like more of a thriller suspense kind of film and that was pretty much the first time I've done
01:26 anything like that you know it was very bloody, gory, it's something that I've always wanted to
01:32 do and so you know it's kind of a huge risk for me because it's not the usual stuff that I've done
01:42 and I've never done anything like this so I don't even know if I was gonna do it well you know so
01:48 yeah it's just it's more of a reminder or kind of like a pat on the back that tells me that I'm
01:56 going the right direction and that I should just keep going. This is the first time that you did
02:01 something like this, what were the challenges, what did you need to do, where did you need to go
02:08 to find that gory, I mean it is gory and we've seen the trailer and of course the movie as well
02:15 and what do you have like people talk about the third part I mean the last part and then it's
02:22 like wow Nadine is like incredible, tell me about that and how you got into character.
02:28 I think what one of the biggest challenge with that project is getting tuned with my
02:37 actress side of me again just because it was kind of after the pandemic and I wasn't used to being
02:45 in front of the screen and acting in a while so it was a bit awkward in the beginning, I kept looking
02:52 at the lens, I was getting uncomfortable with acting, I wasn't used to throwing lines and all
02:58 of that so it was kind of like a muscle that I haven't worked out in a while and I'm starting to
03:05 kind of learn it again but then I guess one of the best, one of the things that I liked about
03:12 this project is that I could explore, I could experiment with the character and like what you
03:18 mentioned earlier the last part that a lot of it was discussed only before we shot the scene.
03:28 Drek Yam is very collaborative and I you know before the scene I asked him if I could do this,
03:33 that, whatever and I was really really excited because these are things that I've never done
03:37 before, I've never done a crazy laugh on screen before, I've never been like full of blood before
03:43 you know and I was so excited because these are the kind of, personally these are the kind of
03:49 series or movies that I love watching. I mean just even talking to you now I can hear already
03:53 the excitement as you start to explain. Okay so how much more out of the box can you go?
03:58 Well I've requested to my directors that I want to do, I want to be a like,
04:06 how do I say it, like a psycho in the project you know. Something like, I don't know maybe
04:16 something like Joker, like that level, like Joker levels, Jeffrey Dahmer levels you know. It just
04:22 really excites me because I love seeing characters or even like you know actors portraying those
04:28 kinds of characters that are really, you know that you really have to nitpick on you know.
04:34 Like every tiny detail, like every hand gesture, every blink of that of an eye, it really has to
04:40 be calculated and it really has to be precise to the character and those are the kind of details
04:46 that I want to do eventually. Looking forward, I know that you're also getting ready for a few
04:53 films that will be released this year, hopefully Metro Manila Film Fest. Yes, so I'm working on
05:01 another project with direct Mikael Red. I'm very excited for this one because- How out of the box
05:08 are you gonna be? It's actually not that bad, it's a horror. But what is the driving force of this
05:18 film is actually the premise and the issue that is being presented. I don't want to talk about it,
05:27 I want direct Mikael to be the one to talk about it. I'm not even sure if he's, you know,
05:32 if he's talked about it but he did post a photo of the cast already. I'll be working with Miss
05:39 Eula Valdez. She's going to be my mom in the film and Bea Benene is going to be my sister in the
05:46 film. Robbie Watshell is my brother and other actors as well. So it's very exciting.
05:57 I'm excited to work with Miss Eula. Oh, that's going to be already an incredible task.
06:03 Mikael Red, I mean, directing and creating all of these things. Okay, it's definitely going to be a
06:10 must watch and I hope that you're able to make it to the Metro Manila Film Fest this year.
06:16 Because we're only going to start shooting on the 31st. So that's why sometimes when people ask me,
06:20 is it for MMFF? I'm like, I don't know because I think it's for MMFF. But then they're like,
06:27 but you're supposed to have submitted it already. Yeah, I don't know.
06:32 But I do know that it's for MMFF and the record said it's for MMFF.
06:41 Yeah, you know, we're so magaleng here in the Philippines. We can do everything.
06:46 In a week's time and in 12 days, or even two weeks and of course, make this all happen. And
06:50 Mikael is so used to that genre. It's a walk in the park for him. Speaking of walk in the park,
06:58 another thing that's also close to your heart, you've gotten awards for the FAMAS and Metro
07:05 Manila Film Fest. And of course, you just released music. Yes. I mean, this year,
07:11 how? Are we gonna wait till Metro Manila Film Fest before another song comes out or an album?
07:18 How are you gonna stay? Yeah, well, definitely, I would like to wait until this film project is
07:24 finished, until Nocturna is finished. Just because it's hard to multitask when you're working on
07:33 music. You kind of have to be there. And all of your attention has to be in music, all of your
07:43 time and everything. You can't multitask. But what's also interesting, like now, like the past
07:51 year or so, you have been, as I said, doing different things. I read somewhere how you like
07:57 to shock yourself. I mean, you're definitely branching out. And in your music as well. I mean,
08:04 rapping. First time ever. It was really fun, actually. We didn't really intend on,
08:11 well, I didn't intend on to rap in the song. But then, you know, we there was so many,
08:17 we had so much stuff that we wanted to put in the song. So we were like, you know what, okay,
08:24 I'm just gonna rap it just so that we can fit everything. Because we tried making it more of,
08:31 I guess, like a singing approach for the first verse. More singing or melodic. But then again,
08:38 in the end, we were like, no, the lyrics, it's perfect. We can't cut down. We have to put all
08:45 of that in the first verse. So I ended up rapping instead. But it was fun. It was such a fun,
08:50 fun experience. More songs. I mean, are you going to stick to that genre of music? Are you going to
08:58 incorporate different things? Definitely would like to try different things. But this was in
09:05 collaboration with Wild. So are you still going to continue collaboration with Wild moving forward?
09:10 We'll see. I mean, I love working with Wild. It was just such a nice experience to, you know,
09:16 to work with them in Siargao. I really didn't expect for us to have a good working relationship
09:21 and to have good rapport, especially that, you know, the producer, Josh, and the writer, Lynn,
09:28 they're both from Singapore. They're Singaporean. So I didn't really expect to have good rapport
09:33 with them right away. And we only had five days to work on the track in Siargao. I guess the
09:39 environment was also a big factor into like putting the vibe, I mean, getting the right
09:44 vibe of the song. But I would love to work with them again. Honestly, it's just a breath of fresh
09:50 air working with different people. You are going to be 30?
09:54 Yes. This year.
09:56 In October 31, I'm going to be 30. I know, you know, I mean, that's the best day because
10:03 that's also my husband's birthday. So I'll never forget.
10:06 Yeah, true. Nice.
10:10 But I mean, now that you are moving on to a different decade, of course, your song was
10:15 already in commemoration or owed to your 20s. Moving forward, what are the other things that
10:21 Nadine Lustre would like to do in her 30s?
10:25 I mean, I really want to establish a brand, you know, maybe a clothing brand or swimwear line.
10:33 We'll see. I want to delve into business as well. But I mean, those are lots of things,
10:41 you know, and every time I think about it, I'm like, okay, I want to do music. I want to do
10:45 films. I want to do business. I'm like, hmm, can I? Can I do that? Or do I have to clone
10:53 myself for me to be able to do that? Because those are, I'm a very hands on person. I love
10:58 being involved in everything, especially, you know, with the creation of whatever it is. And
11:05 films, music and brands are like, it's all creating.
11:10 Thank you so much for chatting with us. Advance happy birthday if I don't
11:14 know.
11:15 Advance happy birthday to your husband as well.
11:17 And all the best to you, Nadine. Congratulations on your win, Safamas.
11:21 Thank you so much for having me.
