00:00 Wood is a durable material up in space.
00:03 Scientists made an experiment and sent three types of wood to the International Space Station, ISS,
00:09 to show how resilient they are in the harsh conditions of space.
00:13 The wood samples were there for 10 months, and the winner was Magnolia.
00:17 Its weight didn't change, and it didn't crack, warp, or end up damaged in any other way either.
00:24 So, the plan is to make wooden satellites, because these regular ones become expensive space junk at the end of their life.
00:32 Plus, when they return to the Earth's atmosphere, they burn up and release some bad substances.
00:38 And who would want that?
00:42 Also, radio waves can easily pass through wood,
00:46 so all sensors and communication antennas can be safely placed inside the satellite.
00:51 Scientists are planning to launch wooden satellites soon, maybe even this year.
