00:00 Archaeologists from the University of the Philippines showcase an educational exhibit
00:04 on archaeological excavation and exploration in Bacolod, Lanao del Norte
00:09 that hints on the lives of early Filipinos.
00:12 Lu Antonio of PIA Iligan City, Lanao del Norte tells us the details.
00:16 Archaeologists from the University of the Philippines School of Archaeology unveiled a
00:24 3D diorama and educational exhibits after the three-week excavation and exploration of Fort
00:30 Almonte located inside Liangan East Elementary School in Bacolod, Lanao del Norte.
00:36 It was constructed in 1891 and was named after Spanish Admiral Pedro de Almonte Verastegui,
00:42 who spearheaded colonization campaigns in Mindanao and Hulu in 1639.
00:48 This archaeological project aims to elevate the site's heritage significance as a strategic
00:54 hub reflecting the sociopolitical dynamics between locals and settlers during the Spanish
00:59 era, American, and Japanese occupation.
01:23 According to their findings, there was no pre-Hispanic habitation here prior to the
01:28 arrival of the Spaniards.
01:30 The site was first recognized by the project team in June 2022 during an archaeological
01:37 survey of Lanao del Norte's coastal municipalities as part of the project led by Dr. Giovanni
01:43 Caballero from the Department of History of MSU IIT that focused on Maranao-Chinese
01:49 contact before 1898.
01:51 We met the funders of the project, the LGU, the DALG, and I, we also met the funders of
02:01 Confucius Institute at Ateneo de Manila University.
02:04 We pulled together the resources that we collected and that's how they were able to pursue
02:13 this project as an independent project itself.
02:16 Furthermore, the UP School of Archaeology is set to draft a report on the exploration
02:21 as the government and stakeholders seek to propose to the National Commission of Culture
02:26 and Arts the reclassification of Fort Almonte as a national cultural treasure and integrate
02:32 it into educational materials that can be easily shared with the public.
02:37 Fort Almonte has reclaimed its identity.
02:41 We have a glimpse of what it was yesterday and how it can tenaciously shift Lanao del
02:47 Norte today.
02:49 I would like to thank the whole team from the UP School of Archaeology for this opportunity
02:55 for showcasing the municipality of Bacolod and our historical accounts.
