00:00 The MMDA has clarified their announcement yesterday that they will stop motorcycles passing through the bicycle lane.
00:08 Darlene Kaye is live.
00:10 The MMDA announced that they will stop motorcycle riders passing through the bike lane in EDSA.
00:23 The motorcycle riders said that they understand this and they can't do anything if they don't follow.
00:28 However, they said that they hope that they will understand this.
00:32 Wendell rides his bicycle everyday to and from work.
00:40 From Yanpasig to Quezon City.
00:42 That's why he is one of the people who are benefiting from the bike lane in EDSA.
00:47 However, there are many people who pass through here who are not riding their bicycles.
00:51 It's a safety issue because sometimes motorcycles are passing through.
00:55 So, not aware, they signal. We are the ones who are riding our bicycles.
00:59 So, it's a bit scary.
01:02 This is a risk for their cyclists.
01:06 Actually, it's not safe because there are many motorcycles and four-wheelers who are still using the bike lane.
01:16 It's very dangerous for bikers like me.
01:23 In these pictures taken by the MMDA in different parts of EDSA,
01:27 the motorcycle riders in the designated bike lane can be seen.
01:31 They also avoid passing through other vehicles.
01:34 It's better to avoid it so that the bikers can pass through.
01:41 It's hard sometimes for the motorcyclists to enter the bike lane.
01:45 Sometimes, they turn around quickly.
01:48 When the bikers turn around, there's a big tendency for them to get hurt.
01:53 Yesterday, the MMDA issued a warning.
01:56 They will restrict the motorcyclists who will pass through the bike lane.
02:00 It's an existing policy. There's a traffic regulation.
02:04 The bicycle lane is exclusive to the bicyclists only.
02:10 Motorcyclists are not allowed to enter.
02:13 That's been a long time by the police.
02:16 One of the riders who admitted to passing through the bike lane,
02:19 he said that the traffic was too much sometimes.
02:21 The time is important for the riders of the Ride Hailing Apps.
02:26 Of course, there's a lot of traffic.
02:30 It's inevitable.
02:32 Because once someone passes through, they will really get hurt.
02:36 So, if it's a wider area, of course, it's a motorcycle.
02:41 They will really follow the rules.
02:45 Arnold said that the designated lane is not accessible for them.
02:51 That's why they have no choice if they don't look for another way.
02:55 But those who are in the motorcycle lane,
02:59 those who pass through other vehicles,
03:03 we can't do that.
03:05 We are stuck.
03:07 That's why we pass through the bike lane.
03:09 But they can't do anything if they don't follow the law.
03:13 The police has no authority over a group of motorcycle riders.
03:17 But maybe it's time to study the law
03:22 just like sharing the bike lane with other motorists.
03:25 At RideTau, we have to consider many, many things.
03:28 Number one, volume of vehicles on the road today.
03:32 On a regular day, we know how the EDSA will fill it.
03:37 So, if we are to allocate a lane fit for a car for a bicycle,
03:43 and yet, the number of bicycles passing by is less than 100,
03:47 is it really effective for us in preventing the flow of traffic?
03:52 According to the MMDA, this is part of their study.
03:55 So, for now, they will not be tied to the police.
03:59 They will just be a warning.
04:01 The Department of Transportation will be the one to inform the police.
04:05 I've been studying for a month
04:08 if it's possible to share a lane between bicycles and motorcycles.
04:14 The fine for riders passing by the bike lanes is around P1,000.
04:24 But the police will study and adjust it first, according to the MMDA.
04:29 Live from Quezon City, I am Darlene Cai of GMA Integrated News.
04:34 Here is your witness.
