00:00 Good afternoon everyone, welcome to our pre-match press conference to preview our game against
00:04 Aston Villa and we'll start off with Stan here at Sky.
00:07 Hi Sean, I think everyone saw it was a really good performance against Fulham without the
00:12 results, so what's the message been to the players this week?
00:16 Yeah a lot of good aspects to the performance, just reaffirming that side of the game.
00:24 We know we created a lot, we know we created good quality chances which is always key for
00:27 me, a lot of the performance was right so it's more about the building blocks from that
00:31 performance going into the next game.
00:32 I know you get asked about Dominic Calderloo every single week.
00:36 I do.
00:37 First off I'm sure we all want to send our congratulations to him for having his baby.
00:41 He didn't.
00:42 How's he adapting to being a father?
00:47 I don't know how he's adapting to being a father, I don't live with him, but I'm sure
00:51 he's enjoying the process like I certainly did.
00:55 On his side of things he's in good shape, managed to get the end part of his rehab done
01:02 this week with 90 minutes so he's in good shape and certainly comes straight back into
01:07 the thinking.
01:08 On the subject of strikers, Che Adams, we believe the bid's gone in, can you tell us
01:12 any more about that?
01:13 There's lots of conversations ongoing with a number of different areas that we hope to
01:18 affect, no news at this stage about any of them.
01:23 Neil Mope, I think it's something like 39 shots in 36 games he's had, he's certainly
01:26 trying, what more do you think he needs to do to break that duck?
01:29 He's worked very hard, he got into the right areas which I always make clear to the players,
01:36 you're in there to miss, hopefully to score, but you understand the reason, it's like being
01:40 in the right place, going into the right places to score goals because eventually you will
01:44 score and he's worked very hard last week at his performance and you just keep going,
01:51 you've got to keep going, that's what strikers do, you keep getting into the right areas,
01:53 the key areas, not just him, other players as well, you've got to keep getting into the
01:56 key areas to score goals.
01:58 So we want to encourage all players to get into the right areas which we have been doing,
02:01 we're trying to make it about the team scoring goals as well, not just focus on one player.
02:07 We did some of that since we came in last season, we want to continue on that and building
02:11 on top of that so it's not just about one player but he's worked very hard last week.
02:18 Has it been a frustrating week given the result or has it been one of hope and excitement
02:24 given the domination you saw from your side?
02:28 Yeah I think a little bit of both in a way, you want the team to perform well, you want
02:33 the consistency, I spoke endlessly about last season because it's an important factor, and
02:39 inside the game the consistency throughout the game and we were, I mean one mistake for
02:43 the goal and that sometimes costs you, which it did, but there was a lot of consistent
02:47 players, a lot of consistent performances throughout the 90 odd minutes.
02:51 And then yeah, the good side of that, so that's the frustrating side that we didn't win the
02:55 game, the good side of it was a very, very good performance I thought, generally speaking,
02:58 there was other things, there's always detail as you look at, the fitness looked good, the
03:02 shape of the side was good, we were productive, broke the play up, the stats were very good
03:06 afterwards, because obviously your eyes don't always lie, they're normally pretty reliable
03:11 but sometimes you see a game differently than when you see the stats.
03:14 The stats were very strong and only really supported a good performance, so yeah a lot
03:17 to build on and a lot of positives at the back end of a pre-season other than the biggest
03:21 one that you're looking for, the biggest positive you're looking for is to win.
03:24 So how do you ensure that you use that as motivation for tomorrow when we're not having
03:28 a similar conversation like this next week?
03:30 Well there's no guarantees, you just have to work hard, you know, keep working hard,
03:33 which the players are doing, keep working at the details of performance because they're
03:38 absolutely paramount in performance, you know, both boxes are where games are won and lost,
03:43 the middle bit of the pitch is important too but both boxes are where it's really at and
03:46 we've got to continue to find the right way of operating in both boxes.
03:51 A lot of good signs of it again last weekend, a lot of good signs last season, not so much
03:54 in the goal scoring department but we created a lot last week so we have to find that again.
03:59 You come up against a well-fancied team in Aston Villa of course, who they themselves
04:04 lost in some style on opening day, what kind of reaction do you expect to see from them
04:08 tomorrow?
04:09 Yes, interesting way of putting it, they lost in some style, strange way of putting
04:14 it but no, they're a good outfit, we know that from what they did last season.
04:19 They'll be looking I'm sure to bounce out of that situation, that result rather, with
04:23 a home game.
04:24 It's important for us to remind ourselves of the good work we did and take them into
04:28 the Villa game with a very positive attitude, which we'll be doing.
04:31 Hi Sean, what are you expecting from Villa and what have you thought of the job that
04:37 Unai Emery has done there so far?
04:38 Well you'd certainly imagine there's a reaction because no-one wants to get beat anyway but
04:44 certainly not the first game of the season.
04:45 We know Newcastle have shown themselves to be a very, very strong side from last season,
04:49 invested heavily in the right areas and made a very good side.
04:54 That being said, Villa showed that they were a very good side last season so I think you'd
04:57 expect a reaction, we have to safeguard against that.
05:02 I think it was Joe Royer who used to say to me, he always says to me, get your retaliation
05:05 in first, don't wait for them to step forward first.
05:07 We've got to play on the front foot, we've got to take the game on, both home and away.
05:11 I think that's our mentality this season, is to take every challenge as it comes but
05:14 take every game on with a real positive attitude and that's what we're looking to do.
05:18 How has Neil Moppe been this week?
05:20 Have you spoken to him?
05:22 Yeah, I speak to him every day.
05:25 Has he mentioned anything about the online abuse that he suffered after the home game?
05:28 No, that's been made clear, our thoughts on that as a club and I think everyone's thoughts
05:33 on it to be honest.
05:34 It's not often that players do bring it up and speak about the online abuse that they
05:40 suffer.
05:41 Do the authorities, do the clubs, social media companies need to do more?
05:45 That's for them to govern all that sort of stuff, I can't do anything about that.
05:49 I only ever remark about social media for the players to be careful with it.
05:52 Against popular belief, I've said it a million times, it never seems to find the power but
05:57 I'm not against social media at all, I just always say to players, be wise with it.
06:00 There's a number of people out there who want to attack people about different things in
06:03 their life, footballers are bound to be open to that if they open their accounts up to
06:07 everyone.
06:08 I just say always be careful of it and be respectful of it.
06:10 Can you say anything about any outgoings, maybe people like Demire Gray, Andrea Gomez?
06:16 No news at the moment.
06:19 Thanks.
06:20 Just a bit more team news.
06:24 Any of the ones who missed out last week likely to come back?
06:31 Dom's in the thinking, as I suggested.
06:34 Miko's still got a bit to do, Arnie's still got a bit to do with coming out of, not really
06:41 injury, but just that real fitness.
06:43 But a lot of them got 90 minutes in the week which was pleasing.
06:47 I think Andre's got a tightness in his calf so he's got to be careful with that because
06:53 he's getting back to full fitness.
06:56 Just trying to get the base fitness right really for a few of them.
06:59 But they're getting closer to what you'd call true fitness.
07:02 Does he just need one goal to kick start him getting going on a run?
07:08 You never know.
07:09 I mean, look, the word of strikers is it can be like that, sometimes it's not.
07:13 The main thing is he's come back very, very fit, he's working very hard for the group
07:16 and I think that's an important factor.
07:18 Keep getting in the right areas and goals do come your way.
07:20 Does he just need one to maybe go in off his back?
07:22 Well, yes.
07:23 I mean, there's a lot.
07:24 We've seen it down the years.
07:26 Sometimes you do need a break, one that just hits you and goes in.
07:28 That's sometimes a way of getting started again.
07:30 Ideally, you want to, I'm sure all strikers want one by design, you know, good run, good
07:34 finish.
07:35 But he gets in the right areas and he continues to do that and that's what we want him to
07:38 do.
07:39 You've got a game to prepare for on Sunday, but obviously the Women's World Cup final.
07:44 Will you have the chance to watch the game?
07:46 Yeah, we were training unfortunately for the semi-final and we got the game prep on Sunday
07:51 but I'll try and catch as much as I can and obviously wish them well.
07:55 Thank you very much.
07:56 We'll go to Julia at Radio Merseyside.
07:58 Hi Sean.
08:01 Last season away wins were difficult to come by.
08:04 I think from February onwards there was only one, but it was the Brighton one, which was
08:07 the other end of the scale and one of the more impressive performances of the season.
08:10 Over the summer and now, is there anything you're doing to look at away games differently
08:14 in order to get more points?
08:16 I think there was a number of close occasions when we played very well.
08:23 I remember one that jumps off the page from last season, it was the Forest game.
08:27 I thought we dominated large parts of the game and played very well.
08:30 It was good away performance other than the result.
08:34 So, the fine lines are there, that was quite clear.
08:37 Others we didn't, obviously we didn't perform well, but that one definitely was one.
08:41 Leicester was another one.
08:43 Really big performance against a top side at the time in Brighton.
08:47 So, you're never a million miles away and I think adding the idea of the mental side
08:53 of the game, adding the approach away from home, adding the belief factor, because we
08:57 all travel well, our fans travel well and support us, I think it's just layering up
09:01 on top of that.
09:02 I think the idea is, it's never that easy, the ideal mentality going into games home
09:08 and away is actually the same.
09:10 You want the same thinking, the same thoughts, the same belief in what you do.
09:13 We obviously know, statistically, that that's never, or very, very rarely over seasons
09:19 is that the case.
09:20 So, I think it's building on last season, adding in detail, but also adding in the mentality
09:26 to go wherever we need to go and take on games to win.
09:29 I think that's a physical thing of course, but it's equally a mental thing.
09:33 Going into whatever stadium with a total belief as a unit that you can win games.
09:36 I think we're trying to edge that way and trying to build on that, but you've got
09:39 to do the work, you've got to win games to keep enhancing that thought.
09:43 There's been a lot of reports about Alex Owoibi's contract this week, is there anything
09:46 you can tell us on that, any further updates?
09:48 No, just always open lines of communication, I've made that clear many times, I've spoken
09:52 to Alex and the club have spoken to his advisor.
09:55 Just an ongoing situation amongst a number who still we're talking to.
09:59 I know you don't want to be drawn on incomings or outgoings, but are transfer windows getting
10:04 even more difficult now?
10:06 Transfer windows tend to be difficult anyway, but if you're not got massive amounts of
10:11 finance, because we've seen the numbers this summer.
10:14 It wasn't so long ago, during the pandemic, the back end of the pandemic, we're all saying
10:17 'Oh, the market's going to change'.
10:19 Well, it certainly has changed, it's gone that way, a long way that way.
10:22 It's become the reality of it.
10:24 It's always challenging, always challenging.
10:26 Money or no money by the way, it's always challenging to get deals done.
10:29 And Schmitty, we're likely to see a debut any time soon, and how's he getting on?
10:33 Who's that, sorry?
10:34 Schmitty.
10:35 He's come in a bit delayed from his games programme.
10:38 We've got 45 minutes in the week, so he's still adjusting and still adapting.
10:41 Very young, but he's adapting to the training, adapting to the playing.
10:45 So he'll be a slow burner I think, but he's going along nicely at the minute, just settling in.
10:49 Thanks very much.
10:50 Thank you.
10:51 Hi Sean, just with Schmitty coming in, what's the situation with Tom Cannon now?
10:56 Is he someone you may be looking to loan out?
10:58 No, he's only just got fit.
10:59 He played 45 the other day, so we'll keep an eye on him and make sure that he's well.
11:03 Once you maybe do Bolter the attack, is he someone you maybe look to get back out in the Championship again?
11:08 Yeah, well, we're keeping our minds open really at this stage.
11:12 We haven't got a big squad as everyone knows.
11:14 We haven't got massive numbers of strikers, that's quite obvious.
11:17 So no, he's in the building for now, and then we'll view it accordingly as the winter sort of comes to the end.
11:22 Just Dwight McNeil, how's he getting on with his recovery?
11:24 Yeah, he's going alright.
11:25 I spoke to him today, just on the light stuff now, but getting back on the, not quite on the grass,
11:30 but getting back in the running and really building a sort of true strength, if you like, to his ankle.
11:35 No, he looks well and he seems okay in himself, so just making sure he's on the right pathway back.
11:40 Can I just ask something about Gianfili Quabama?
11:42 Obviously, he's come back from traps on sport last season on loan.
11:46 His agent said earlier this summer that he doesn't think that he'll play for Everton again.
11:49 So is there any potential movement on?
11:51 Yeah, there's no news at the moment, but he's not back with us at the moment.
11:54 So we're monitoring his situation.
11:56 Someone who, obviously with Sager saying that, you'd sense he'd love to allow to leave if an offer comes in?
12:02 Well, we'll wait and see, yeah. We need an offer to come in first.
12:05 Thank you.
