00:00 "Hey, this is Halloween Town, right?"
00:02 "Well, it sure does look like Halloween, y'know?"
00:07 Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're counting down our picks for the 10 Weirdest PS2 RPGs.
00:15 For this list, we'll be looking at the most bizarre and truly bonkers role-playing games
00:19 that have graced the PlayStation 2.
00:22 So be sure to explore the overworld of the comments section in order to let us know which
00:27 PS2 RPGs you thought were downright strange.
00:31 Before we begin, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring
00:36 the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:39 Baroque
00:40 "Is your memory damaged as well?
00:43 You must learn what you must accomplish."
00:47 If it ain't Baroque, then don't fix it.
00:50 Yes, yes, I was contractually obligated to make that pun, you're welcome.
00:54 Silliness aside, Baroque is a very strange RPG indeed.
00:58 Combining elements of fantasy, steampunk, and post-apocalyptic natures, Baroque sees
01:03 you move about the Neuro Tower in order to decipher the works of the Absolute God.
01:09 Throwing in elements of climate change, celestial beings, and creatures who resemble manifestations
01:14 of guilt, this action RPG doesn't so much teeter on the verge of weird, but fully succumbs
01:19 to it.
01:26 Duel Hearts
01:27 If the menagerie of hyper-vibrant colors doesn't lull you into this weird RPG, then perhaps
01:38 the fact that you can battle a boss called Moneybags, who just so happens to be cosplaying
01:43 as Oogie Boogie from The Nightmare Before Christmas, will.
01:47 Yep, this is a bizarre one to be sure.
01:50 Duel Hearts is a fantasy tale all about dreams.
01:53 You step into the role of Rumble, a treasure hunter who must search through various dream
01:57 worlds, solving puzzles, pummeling enemies, and doing some wonky platforming.
02:03 This game comes off as a sort of fever dream, however, there's no denying that hopping
02:08 about with Rumble and your pal Tumble searching for dream orbs will put a smile on your face,
02:14 even if it is a derpy one.
02:21 SteamBot Chronicles
02:29 I guess this is why you shouldn't judge a game by its cover, since SteamBot Chronicles
02:35 looks like it would be a super bright, cheery, and vibrant RPG.
02:39 Instead, you are greeted by one of the drabbest color palettes around, which adds to the weirdness
02:45 of the already strange mech-based RPG.
02:48 Yeah, you heard that right, SteamBot Chronicles is a mechbot RPG with full-on robot battles
02:54 and destruction.
02:55 Now, this feels especially weird when there is a lively, fantasy-esque music playing in
03:00 the background as you decimate foes with your customizable mech.
03:04 Adding to the weirdness is the fact that the protagonist's name is Vanilla R. Beans.
03:09 Vanilla can roam around the town of Nefroburg, helping townsfolk, buying items from the bakery,
03:14 trotting about in your trotmobile, which are the mechs, and even playing the piano in a
03:19 music minigame.
03:21 Well I guess they do say variety is the spice of life, right?
03:29 Magna Carta Tears of Blood
03:37 Now if you were somehow hoping for a PS2 RPG about the 13th century Great Charter of Freedoms,
03:44 otherwise known as the Magna Carta, then you will be sorely disappointed here since, well,
03:49 it's not about that at all.
03:51 Tears of Blood is a fantasy real-time battle RPG that takes place in the land of Etheria,
03:57 where wars ravage across the kingdoms.
03:59 The game leans into themes of alliances, mercenary work, forbidden magic, and familiars.
04:05 The game features a fairly robust battle system where a leadership meter must be filled and
04:10 multiple timed button presses must be made on a trinity ring in order for actions to
04:15 be counted as successful.
04:17 While it might be obvious this game is weird because of the "Magna Carta" part in the
04:22 title, it's also quite bizarre given its janky animations, laughable voice acting,
04:27 and simply out-of-place vocal piece in the opening cutscene.
04:38 Kingdom Hearts
04:39 Now I freaking adore the Kingdom Hearts series, and yes, even despite its convoluted and often
04:50 impenetrable plotline and characters, you really can't argue that way back in 2002,
04:56 the sheer idea of an RPG that combined the likes of beloved Final Fantasy characters
05:01 with popular Disney characters and worlds was downright bananas.
05:06 Fortunately, it paid off since people loved seeing Sora, Donald, and Goofy explore the
05:11 likes of the Olympus Coliseum, Tarzan's Deep Jungle, Wonderland, and so so much more.
05:17 Now back in the day, this mashup was mind-blowing to say the least, and it's crazy to think
05:22 how far the series has come with its many, many spin-offs and mainline entries.
05:34 Virtua Quest
05:43 Reality can be so boring sometimes, right?
05:45 Why not hop into virtual reality to experience another world?
05:48 Yep, that's the plot of Virtua Quest in a nutshell.
05:52 If you might have gleaned, it's an action RPG spin-off of the fighting game franchise
05:56 Virtua Fighter.
05:58 That concept alone is pretty weird, but then again, Street Fighter VI opted to go open-world
06:03 and people seemed to enjoy that.
06:05 Virtua Quest stars the happy-go-lucky Sai, a character who must venture through various
06:11 servers of this virtual reality escape to collect Virtua Souls, defeat opponents, and
06:17 ultimately try and save the day.
06:19 Interestingly, in Japan, the game's full title of the game is Virtua Fighter Cyber
06:24 Generation Ambition of the Judgment VI.
06:27 Yeah, that seems on-brand.
06:29 "Excellent.
06:30 It seems that you're indeed worthy of this power."
06:34 Shadow Hearts Covenant
06:42 Ditching the horror themes and tones of the first Shadow Hearts, the sequel, Covenant,
06:47 leans even more into the alternate history macguffins that this series has become synonymous
06:52 with.
06:53 Well, that and the spectacular Judgment Ring-based battles.
06:56 In Covenant, you play as a crazy cast of characters that include Karen, Yuri, Geppetto, Blanca,
07:02 and more at the height of World War I in 1915.
07:06 The game uncovers the plot of the Sabientos Gladio, a secret society that has ties to
07:12 the first game's protagonist, Yuri, and his monstrous yet wondrous powers.
07:17 You explore various real-life and fictional versions of Europe as overarching themes of
07:23 war, power, and even Lovecraftian elements come into play.
07:27 It's a frankly wild alternate history RPG that really hasn't been matched today.
07:33 And my goodness, the musical score in this game is all over the place, and I mean that
07:37 in the best way possible.
07:44 Persona 3
07:52 The very notion that you have to put a magical cap in your cranium in order to summon your
07:57 monstrous partner in battle pretty much sums up why this entry is the craziest of all of
08:03 its brethren.
08:04 The popular school-based social and academic aspects are all here in force, but it's
08:09 the third outing's dark and nuanced storyline, catchy music, and quirky characters that really
08:15 elevates it to the realm of WTF territory.
08:18 The weirdness is absolutely part of its charm, of course, even in one where the concept of
08:24 death is very much the thematic center.
08:34 Graffiti Kingdom
08:35 So, do you like fantasy games?
08:44 Do you enjoy art?
08:46 How about graffiti?
08:47 Do you enjoy creating cartoony, monstrous aberrations that will make your friends and
08:51 family run in fear?
08:52 Wait, what?
08:54 Enter Graffiti Kingdom, an action RPG, monster catching game, and creation game of sorts
09:00 that was most certainly created by someone who downed one too many energy drinks before
09:05 development.
09:06 Graffiti Kingdom has you step into the quirky role of Prince Pixel of the Canvas Kingdom,
09:11 who must battle evil through the power of graffiti and monster creation... for reasons,
09:17 I guess?
09:18 There's just something so charming and creative about the way you can collect monsters
09:23 to then edit them into some other amalgamation altogether, to then just have them battle
09:28 other foes for you.
09:36 Okage Shadow King
09:44 If Tim Burton would have made a video game in the early 2000s, it might have looked very
09:49 similar to this horror-adjacent turn-based RPG.
09:53 Now this one is strange because on the surface it looks pretty cartoony and light-hearted.
09:57 However, dig a bit deeper and you will find a familial story, all about ancient evil and
10:03 a ritual summoning, one that frees the dastardly soul of Lord Stanley Hi-Hat Trinidad the 14th,
10:10 a mouthful, otherwise simply known as Stan.
10:13 Protagonist Ari unfortunately has Stan fused into his own shadow, which means the two are
10:18 now linked together, for better or for worse.
10:22 Usually worse.
10:23 Now it's up to them and Ari's pals to destroy the fake evils around the realm.
10:27 So yeah, it's got some bite to it beneath its chummy face.
10:37 Do you agree with our picks?
