00:00 I'm the oral health promoter for the Australian Dental Association and I also work as a general
00:04 dentist for New South Wales Health.
00:06 Just to give you a bit of context, Dental Health Week is an annual campaign run by the
00:09 Australian Dental Association.
00:11 The focus for this year has been on the connection between the mouth and the rest of the body.
00:15 Your mouth is full of bacteria.
00:17 There's a balance between good and bad bacteria.
00:19 When you forget to floss or you brush, you're just neglecting your oral health.
00:23 The rates of bacteria start to increase and we're actually seeing a raise in the bad bacteria.
00:28 And that bacteria can go into your bloodstream, it can be swallowed into your gut or inhaled
00:32 into your lungs.
00:33 So it's going to get lodged into other sites of your body where it's either going to contribute
00:37 to the development of diseases or make conditions that you have already possibly worse.
00:42 And we know that there's links between the mouth and cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes,
00:47 low birth weight babies, Alzheimer's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and there's more conditions
00:54 that are being explored.
00:55 That evidence base is growing.
