00:00 Canadian out pop and valley was recently in town as part of its lost in translation album tour
00:05 And I got to speak with the band members over the weekend just before their show in Manila
00:09 They told me more about their latest album and how excited they were to perform for their Filipino fans for the first time. I
00:16 Keep saying I don't know if we're gonna fully
00:19 Understand what's happening until we get home and look back
00:23 But I think that's important because we're trying to be really in the moment really enjoy it because it's been years in the making
00:29 And yeah, I think we're just like learning so much about also the world
00:33 I mean, we've always been so fascinated with coming here and obviously we love the food of the fashion the culture the people everyone's so kind
00:40 And amazing but to fully be here and experience it
00:43 It's a it feels like once in a lifetime for us and obviously we want to come back
00:46 But are you nervous excited? I mean meeting your Filipino fans for the very very first time
00:52 I find I don't have as much time to be nervous
00:55 I don't know if that makes sense, but we kind of we kind of you know
00:59 Land do all these things get to the venue and like there's so many things that have to go right for the show to go on
01:05 Yeah, you know and like that's on top of all of the travel and everything that you already have to worry about
01:11 So by the time you're actually done playing the show
01:14 That's when like, you know, the nerves might have set in and you're like, oh my god
01:18 I just finally like, you know took in what I could and
01:22 So yeah, so go go go. It's so go go
01:25 So I think it's just we're we're just enjoying it as much as we can trying to live in the moment as much as we possibly
01:31 can
01:32 And you know, I guess not have as much nerves as we might normally have so yeah
01:39 I think the show the show is like the least I don't know. We've just played so many shows
01:43 We are just so excited. It's I think it's more of an excitement. We've converted the nerves
01:48 It's like on remote control. I mean, it's like a
01:51 Like a lot of know the routine you guys know what you need to do to get you ready for the show
01:57 Yeah, I didn't 100% Yeah, I sometimes I feel like our tour manager just winds us up like a toy
02:02 It's like hey, let's get them ready for today
02:04 It's the rest
02:08 Because every fan is like a different person
02:11 They're individuals and like I think doing each like press opportunity is different like this morning
02:16 We had a bunch of authentic Filipino breakfast food and it's like, you know, we're not doing that in Ohio on tour
02:23 Like so it's like it's the new
02:25 No, it's like the new
02:27 experiences traveling like that
02:29 We like really try and take in because that's such a beautiful part of touring and then
02:33 Meeting like new fans every single night like they all have their own stories
02:37 And do you carry do you change the set list from one city to another?
02:41 Depending on the audience or the fans or you pretty much have the same
02:46 sometimes we
02:47 Will change it depending on if like we know that a song is bigger in a certain country or region
02:54 but we'll also take like
02:56 Requests like we won't like if there's not like us like a period in the set where it's like, okay request
03:01 Like but if somebody is like screaming a song which they we haven't heard that like a ton here
03:08 But in North America people will spend like the whole first half of the set
03:14 Screaming a song and it's just like
03:16 Okay, like I guess we'll play
03:19 You know that they scream out the song wanting you to sing it but end up singing it anyway
03:23 I know I know exactly really gets coming. It's gonna wait
03:28 But other times we yeah, it's so hard cuz like we we've obviously like we try to put out a body of work every year
03:37 So we do have a lot of music and it's really really tough to pick which songs
03:44 Are going in the setlist and you just can't please everybody. You can't please yourself either their songs
03:48 I wish we were playing but I I mean I was just gonna say you guys do dish out a lot of songs
03:53 You know from EPS to LPS EPS EPS EPS LPS. I mean what makes you decide?
03:59 What what when do you do an EP? When do you do an LP? Why an EP? Why not another LP?
04:05 It's I feel like the
04:10 We we know when it's the time is right for instance for this album
04:14 like we we put out our first record maybe and then we put out two
04:17 EPS during the pandemic because it was kind of a time for us to experiment and not
04:22 Thank you. Yeah, I mean they they hold they don't they hold the same way
04:27 Creativity, but it's just like less songs and it was also more
04:31 more exploration musically, I feel like we're just trying a bunch of different things and
04:36 And you know the universe will kind of tell you when it's time for for an album and it felt right for a second album
04:41 it's almost like
04:42 Like a TV show versus like a movie a three-hour movie, you know what I mean?
04:46 like there's something about like the overall theme of
04:50 a bunch of songs coming together because of the time you were going through and when you were writing and where you were writing in it and
04:58 It just like sort of creates itself and you can't really like deny it of its authentic self
05:04 Like it kind of either an album comes out or like an EP comes out and I think that happens in like the time of your
05:09 life and I think an EP like Rob said is more like
05:12 I don't want to put so much pressure on this
05:15 I just want to make a bunch of music and like we still make a cohesive
05:19 We still have intros and transition stuff because artistically we're just obsessed with that stuff
05:23 But it's like when there's an album
05:25 I think the way it's consumed is like it's not about just like a song being on a playlist
05:30 It's about people listening to it top to bottom and soundtracking their life to it
05:34 But now in Lost in Translation, it was meant to be an album
05:37 I mean you put that in your mind and said guys from down
05:41 And what was it about Lost in Translation, I mean interesting title, yeah
05:49 Why Lost in Translation? Yeah, I mean that was a song that we originally wrote
05:55 Way back when way back when you dished out it was in Dropbox forever. It was just a song
06:00 They had like a verse and a chorus and it actually called something different, too
06:05 But we were just kind of like messing around with that
06:07 and then once we kind of got to making an album we kind of resurfaced it and
06:11 Kind of rewrote it as a kind of complement to like the beginning of a new era for us
06:16 So if you listen to Lost in Translation the song it
06:18 Actually calls back a lot of old lyrics from our first album from a bunch of EPs
06:23 all the songs are kind of like little all the lyrics are a little like Easter eggs of kind of our past and
06:29 This album kind of feels like us kind of reflecting on our past but also on our future and I don't think it's a very
06:34 We've been saying this a lot like no, it's not a very like answering question record
06:38 It's a very seeking album, but in general, I mean if you look at the cover, it's kind of classic value
06:43 It's just us like I think a lot of this album is just about our life our experiences and bandhood
06:48 Just what's it like to be in a band? It's really not that
06:52 It's not bad, we're all we're just we have a sibling dynamic
06:57 I've never really like I know we just we're we're so
07:04 Different but I think it that's very topical like we're actually very much the same
07:11 and and I think
07:14 That's why the album is sort of this
07:19 Figuring out kind of stage of us because we
07:23 We know we're the same but I think we're in this
07:28 Stage of our lives. We're like we have been the same for so long that we want to be different from each other
07:35 But we know that we're the same so it's like why are we running away from that?
07:39 But we want like our independence and like that's just like what you do when you have a sibling - yeah
07:46 I mean you survived ten years. I mean or so of being together. I mean there must be something dynamic
07:52 You know within each one of you and as you come together as a group, you know
07:57 It's like you guys just all bolt in and make it something, you know, you know wonderful happen after the Philippines
08:03 I know you guys are busy, but what's next for you?
08:05 We're going to Australia. Oh you are and like we're doing like a bunch of other Asian
08:14 Singapore Australia will be very cool because we've never been
08:17 We've never been there and then after this tour
08:21 we're doing a couple other tours and then
08:25 Well, I don't know. We want to write more music. We were kind of itching to write
08:31 Well, we are so excited and happy that you finally made it to this part of the world. Yeah
08:36 Thank you guys so much. I mean, this is a beautiful place
08:39 We're so honored to be here first time ever playing a show definitely not our last and yeah, we love you guys
08:45 Just honored to be here
08:46 Please check out our new album lost translation if you want to listen to a great album because we love it
08:51 See you guys. Thank you so much
