01:23 Researchers say that cancer-killing pill is like a snowstorm that closes a key airline
01:27 hub shutting down all flights in and out only in planes carrying cancer cells.
01:32 The mutated form of PCNA has long been deemed challenging to target for therapy.
01:37 But the researchers have achieved the unimaginable, developing the molecule AOH-1996 which effectively
01:44 targets and kills the mutated PCNA, shutting down cancer cells.
01:49 This groundbreaking therapy is the culmination of two decades of dedicated research and development.
01:54 Named after Anna Olivia Healy, a young girl born in 1996 who tragically lost a battle
01:59 with cancer, AOH-1996 is a testament to the perseverance of scientists in their quest
02:05 to find a breakthrough treatment for this relentless disease.
02:07 In tests, AOH-1996 was found to be useful in treating breast, prostate, brain, ovarian,
02:13 cervical, skin, and lung cancers.
02:16 It selectively kills cells by disrupting how those cells reproduce.
02:20 This process is known as apoptosis and it prevents cells with damaged DNA from spreading
02:25 throughout the body.
