00:00 - Hey!
00:00 (bell dings)
00:03 - There he is.
00:05 - Aw, too much energy.
00:06 - Too much energy in the morning?
00:07 I don't like this one bit.
00:09 (bell dings)
00:10 - Hey, I can see your dad, it's probably strange.
00:12 - Why are you like ready to go?
00:13 I don't like this one bit.
00:15 - I like that.
00:15 - How are you, man?
00:16 - What's up, brother?
00:17 - Good to see you, brother.
00:18 - See, when you're old, you gotta start warming up,
00:19 'cause then you might hurt yourself.
00:20 You might hurt yourself.
00:21 - You look good.
00:22 - Hey, you smell good.
00:23 Who comes to the gym smelling this good?
00:25 - Well, when you look like a zombie,
00:26 you gotta at least be attracted to one of your senses.
00:29 - Right on, brother, how you feeling?
00:30 - Dude, I'm exhausted.
00:31 I flew in last night.
00:32 - I've seen you, killing it.
00:34 - I'm on maybe an hour of sleep.
00:35 - Oh, man.
00:36 - So let's get it in, man.
00:37 - You can do that when you're your age.
00:38 - Wake me up.
00:39 - All right, let's do it.
00:39 - Let's take advantage.
00:40 - Let's do it, so we'll get wrapped up.
00:41 I got my boy to wrap you up,
00:42 and then we'll do, you know,
00:43 I'm gonna work out right here.
00:44 - Let's get it in.
00:44 - All right, let's do it.
00:45 (bell dings)
00:46 - Yo, so Chappelle, tell me how that was,
00:47 'cause I remember last time we talked,
00:48 you hadn't kicked it yet.
00:49 - Dude, just a dream come true.
00:51 He invited me out to his summer camp
00:53 in the cornfields of Yellow Springs, Ohio,
00:56 which is actually about 45 minutes south
00:58 of where I'm, like, born and raised.
01:00 - Oh, wow, what a trip.
01:01 - Kind of a bit of a homecoming.
01:02 - Yeah, yeah.
01:03 - And yeah, he invited me out there,
01:05 and he just could not have been a better friend and mentor.
01:09 He was super hospitable, so excited that I was there.
01:12 It was, like, so flattering and adorable,
01:13 like, how excited he was that I was there.
01:15 - Oh, that's awesome.
01:15 - He just kept saying, "Thank you so much for coming,"
01:17 and I was like, "Dude, you have no idea."
01:19 Like, I would have canceled anything to be a part of this.
01:22 Like, it was such a dream come true.
01:23 The shows were amazing,
01:24 and he just was dropping gems of wisdom over and over again,
01:28 just giving so much advice on the tour.
01:30 'Cause, you know, he's a 30-year vet of this.
01:33 - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:33 No, he's a legend right there.
01:35 That's just--
01:36 - Yeah, he was amazing.
01:37 He crushed, too, per usual.
01:38 - Yeah.
01:39 - But it was awesome, man.
01:40 I couldn't have dreamed it to be better.
01:41 - That's awesome.
01:42 - Oh, yeah.
01:43 - That's awesome, and I love that it's not far
01:44 from where you grew up and stuff, too.
01:45 - Yeah, we stopped by my hometown for a little bit.
01:47 It's a ghost town, per usual.
01:48 - Yeah, yeah.
01:49 - Like, the only place that was open,
01:50 we even saw people, was like the ice cream shop in town
01:52 that everybody goes to.
01:53 - Ah.
01:53 - Which is right next to the gas station.
01:54 Thank you very much.
01:55 - Yeah.
01:56 (bell dings)
01:57 - You've done how many cities, and how many more you got?
01:58 - We just did the Pacific Northwest.
02:00 We hit Oregon and Washington this past weekend,
02:01 which was like the first official kickoff
02:03 of the Problematic World Tour,
02:05 and we've got about, I think, 127 more cities to go.
02:10 - Wow!
02:10 - And most of those are two shows a night.
02:12 - So, is the Grind what you thought it was gonna be, man?
02:15 I know, 'cause you haven't done one at this magnitude.
02:17 Is it a bit overwhelming?
02:20 Is it, how are you pacing yourself for it?
02:21 - You know, the shows aren't the exhausting part.
02:23 It's like the midday interviews,
02:25 meetings, and stuff like that.
02:27 Because we do wanna do a lot more than comedy.
02:29 Like, I wanna get more into acting.
02:30 I wanna potentially direct someday,
02:32 get into producing and development.
02:33 So, these are all other avenues that I'm trying to explore,
02:36 but, I mean, that's taking up my day job hours, you know?
02:39 So, the Grind is everything I wanted it to be, for sure.
02:43 My biggest issue, for sure, is I'm a horrible sleeper.
02:46 Like I mentioned coming in here,
02:48 I'm on like an hour of sleep right now.
02:49 I have horrific insomnia.
02:50 If I could sleep like a normal person,
02:52 six, seven, eight hours a night,
02:54 I think I'd be just fine.
02:55 So, I think it's just trying to get myself into the routine
02:58 of like, okay, this is gonna be my schedule
02:59 for the next year of my life.
03:01 Because for the past 10 years living in LA,
03:04 you wake up every day with nothing to do.
03:07 You're like, I hope I get an audition this week,
03:09 so I have one thing to focus on.
03:10 - That's 95% of LA.
03:12 - Of course.
03:13 So, you take that for granted, though.
03:14 You're frustrated at the amount of sleep
03:16 that you're getting and you're like,
03:17 I have nothing going on.
03:18 And then you get to a position like this,
03:19 you're like, man, I would love a day off.
03:21 - Yeah, so that's interesting that you wanna get more
03:23 into the acting right now, too,
03:24 which seems inevitable, movies and sitcom.
03:26 Would a sitcom be something you'd entertain?
03:28 - Sitcoms aren't my favorite.
03:31 I'm more of a film fan, first and foremost.
03:33 I do like a good single cam sitcom,
03:36 but I'm really open to anything.
03:38 Just something I wanna enjoy, that's what it is.
03:40 I've done a lot of TV in the past
03:41 that didn't bring me a lot of happiness.
03:43 I was grateful for the learning experience
03:46 and that step up in my career.
03:48 I just wanna be happy in what I do,
03:51 which is what I'm so grateful to have success
03:53 in comedy for.
03:55 - That's awesome.
03:55 - It's something that is actually in my control
03:57 and I get to do my thing.
03:58 - Exactly, exactly.
03:59 I was just curious, I wanted to ask you last time,
04:01 who's your Mount Rushmore of comics?
04:05 - How many people are on Mount Rushmore?
04:06 - Four.
04:07 - Four, is it four?
04:08 Hilarious.
04:09 - Four, four.
04:10 - So that's going Dave Chappelle, Ricky Gervais,
04:14 George Carlin, fourth one.
04:18 I have to go Eddie Murphy.
04:23 - Yeah, that's a hell of a Mount Rushmore right there.
04:24 - I have to, and I'm actually filming my next special
04:26 at the Dara Theater in DC,
04:27 which is what I believe is where Eddie filmed Delirious.
04:30 - Yeah?
04:31 - Yeah, I don't think Raw, I think Delirious.
04:32 I'm super excited to do that.
04:33 - Oh, that's awesome.
04:34 - I know, so iconic.
04:35 - That's a good career to emulate right there too,
04:36 a bunch of films after that.
04:38 - Yes, exactly, that's all the kind of stuff I wanna do.
04:40 You know, a bit of the Kevin Hart method,
04:42 just spread yourself wide.
04:43 - Spread, yeah.
04:44 - I wanna do a little bit of everything.
04:46 - I bet the toughest thing for you,
04:47 and I'm just assuming,
04:48 but 'cause it's toughest for me when I travel,
04:50 is finding the time to squeeze in the workouts.
04:52 - Dude, so bad.
04:53 - 'Cause do you sleep, do you train?
04:54 - You have to choose.
04:55 - You know what I'm saying?
04:56 'Cause you gotta choose about that.
04:57 - And we chose training today, man.
04:58 - Yeah.
04:59 - For me, it's a lot of hotel gyms, which you know,
05:03 are the least motivating.
05:04 You get in there, there's just a dumbbell rack
05:06 with a 35 missing, a 15 missing.
05:08 - Right, right, right, exactly.
05:09 - Yeah, the ones you need that day for sure,
05:11 and some crappy treadmills on a carpet floor.
05:14 There's nothing less motivating
05:16 than working in a hotel gym with carpet on the floor.
05:18 You feel like you're just in a living room.
05:19 - That requires discipline.
05:20 - It's so bad, which is why I'm actually excited,
05:22 'cause we're getting a tour bus in October.
05:23 - Oh, nice.
05:24 - And obviously you need a place to park your tour bus.
05:25 - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:26 - And I think we're literally gonna route that
05:27 around public gyms.
05:29 - Perfect.
05:30 - Like, just park in whatever, like LA Fitness,
05:31 or Lifetime Fitness, or whatever,
05:33 park as nearest by the venue.
05:35 - Speaking of LA, I love seeing the billboard
05:37 of you right here.
05:38 Is it me, or does it look very Jim Morrison-esque?
05:41 Are you a Doors fan?
05:41 - I am, I am, and that's actually why I emulated the pose.
05:44 - I like this, I thought it was just me,
05:45 I was like, oh, okay.
05:46 - I'm so happy you caught onto it.
05:48 - Yeah, oh, wait, like I said, I'm old, so I know.
05:51 (laughing)
05:52 So I love this, I was like, oh, my guy right here.
05:54 How are you familiar with him?
05:55 This is way before your time.
05:56 - Well, the first introduction to Doors I actually got
05:59 was the Val Kilmer film.
06:01 - Oh, yeah.
06:01 - When I was younger, I saw that at my grandpa's house.
06:03 - Yeah, it was Ryan Nick over, yeah.
06:04 - Yeah, and my grandfather was a huge classic rock fan,
06:07 and I spent the majority of my childhood with him,
06:08 so I grew up just loving classic rock.
06:11 So when I was trying to figure out
06:12 what the tone was gonna be for the shoot,
06:15 for all the promotional stuff for this tour,
06:17 I was like, what has a bit of an edge to it,
06:18 somebody who's been in my position at around the same age,
06:22 who I just thought was kind of a cultural icon
06:26 in their prime, and I just, I love Jim Morrison.
06:29 I mean, I hope I live longer, hopefully.
06:32 - Yeah, no, no.
06:33 (laughing)
06:34 - I'm a huge fan, and I'm so happy you caught onto it.
06:36 - Yeah.
06:37 - Somebody posted an Instagram story,
06:38 and it was like putting the things side by side,
06:40 and I thought everybody was gonna know this.
06:42 Like, that's where I got the inspiration for it from.
06:45 So many people, when I reshared the story,
06:47 were like, oh my God, I had no idea.
06:49 - Yeah.
06:50 - To me, it couldn't have been more obvious.
06:51 - The cool ones, no.
06:52 - But I also got a tattoo of John Lennon,
06:54 and when I posted it--
06:55 - Oh, wow, I didn't even notice that.
06:56 - Everybody thinks it's Harry Potter.
06:58 (laughing)
06:59 Everybody does.
06:59 It is so frustrating.
07:00 - That is the best.
07:01 - It's about a cadaver, anybody who thinks it.
07:03 So dead.
07:04 (bell dinging)
07:06 - All right, before we start training, real quick,
07:08 rapid fire right here.
07:09 - Yeah.
07:10 - Pre-show ritual, anything you do,
07:11 any jams you listen to, or anything in particular?
07:13 - Depends on my mood for the show.
07:14 My walkout song is usually "Many Men" by 50 Cent.
07:17 - Yeah.
07:18 - Gets my blood pumping, for sure.
07:19 But sometimes, right before I go on stage,
07:21 I'll wanna just put on some classic rock.
07:22 I'll put on some Bob Seger, some--
07:24 - There you go.
07:25 - Some CCR, some Lynyrd Skynyrd, something like that.
07:27 Just kind of vibe out.
07:28 I'm not one of those comics that's like,
07:29 okay, everybody has to get out of the green room.
07:31 I need my moment to just kind of focus and go over my notes.
07:34 I like just being loose, joking around with my friends,
07:36 'cause then I feel warmed up a little bit.
07:38 - Right, right, right.
07:39 - Your brain's firing away already.
07:40 - Yeah, no, that's a great approach.
07:42 Something you never travel without.
07:44 - Ooh, um, my stereo, my portable stereo,
07:48 so I can play some music.
07:49 Movie you quote the most?
07:51 Oh, that's tough.
07:53 Ooh, uh, movie I quote the most,
07:59 oh, "Walk Hard," the Dewey Cox story, for sure.
08:02 Have you seen it with John C. Reilly?
08:03 - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:04 - That movie, such a good movie.
08:04 - I figured it was a comedy.
08:05 See, I'm over here with like, good fellas and stuff,
08:07 but you're gonna have to--
08:08 - No, absolutely not.
08:09 - Yeah, um, celebrity crush growing up?
08:12 - Celebrity crush growing up would have been Jessica Alba.
08:16 - Good taste?
08:17 - Yeah.
08:18 - All right, cheat day meal?
08:19 - Cheat day meal?
08:21 I'm a big sweets guy, I love a dessert.
08:23 So like, I'll go out somewhere, get like a slice of a pie,
08:26 or a cake, something sweet.
08:30 And I wish I didn't take as many cheat days as I do.
08:32 I can't help myself.
08:33 - You can get away with it right now.
08:34 - Well, the biggest problem is,
08:34 like one of the viral videos from some of my standup
08:37 was this woman giving me cookies on stage.
08:39 Since that blown up, since that has blown up,
08:42 so many people bring me cookies to every show we do.
08:45 And it's so hard, you're like,
08:46 "Oh, today I'm eating clean, I'm gonna be motivated."
08:47 - I remember that clip.
08:48 - Oh, it's so, it's so hard not to eat all the baked goods.
08:51 - Right, right, right.
08:52 - And then you're like, "Is this how I'm gonna die?
08:53 "Is someone gonna point something at me?"
08:54 - Right, exactly, somebody's gonna be a jokester right there.
08:55 - It's a certain level of evil.
08:57 - Biggest lie you've ever read about yourself?
09:00 - That I've had plastic surgery.
09:02 That's the funniest thing in the entire world to me,
09:04 because puberty hit me so late.
09:06 Like, I didn't look like this until I was like 23.
09:09 - Oh, so they thought you'd blow up with it?
09:11 - Oh my God, everyone's like,
09:12 "Oh, he's got cheek fillers, he's got his lips done."
09:14 - That's hilarious.
09:15 - Whatever, jawline surgery is a thing, I guess.
09:17 It's like, sorry, you need surgery to look like that.
09:20 - Eventually you're gonna hear a rumor that you're dead.
09:22 'Cause I heard that you're dead.
09:22 - That I'm dead?
09:23 - I heard that, yeah, I heard that.
09:24 - Have you heard that you're dead?
09:25 - I'm like, "Yo, I'm ready."
09:26 - Oh my God.
09:27 - People start saying some crazy stuff.
09:31 And last one, what emoji describes
09:32 your dating life right now?
09:34 - Oh, the emoji smiling with the little hearts around it.
09:38 - Ah, all right, all right, you ready?
09:41 - Let's do it, man.
09:42 - Let's get it, let's get it.
09:43 Let's bump up.
09:44 (upbeat music)
09:46 - So Matt's doing some mitt work right now.
09:48 - Oh, okay, I see what the one two.
09:52 - Throwing some nice combos right there.
09:57 - Okay, right?
09:58 (laughing)
10:05 - Ah!
10:06 - Snappy punches, nice little combos.
10:11 Relaxed in there.
10:13 - He's moving you.
10:25 - Nice.
10:26 - Good body.
10:27 - There you go, slow.
10:30 - Right hand, right hand on the book.
10:33 - Have it right hand.
10:35 - Again.
10:36 - Jab, jab on the book to the body.
10:40 - Get there, last one.
10:41 - Yay!
10:44 - Hey, that's good for tired player.
10:47 Non-stop, non-stop.
10:49 - All right, don't be sad.
10:52 (bell dinging)
10:54 (grunting)
10:56 - There you go, there you go, there you go.
11:09 - Keep your head down.
11:17 - Oh, you're putting on air.
11:24 (laughing)
11:25 - That was good.
11:26 - My man, I'm impressed.
11:28 - Thank you so much.
11:29 - You got some good hands.
11:30 - Hey.
11:30 - Bro, learning from the best, are you kidding?
11:32 - You are not 50.
11:33 You are not 50.
11:34 - Keep that on the GL, player, keep that on the GL.
11:37 You can't lie anymore though, 'cause of Google.
11:38 - Hey, I wanna do a last combat standing,
11:40 but a fighting edition, I got my money on you.
11:42 - Bro, let's go.
11:43 - That's what's up.
11:44 - All right, keep throwing it out there.
11:45 - As long as it's not me versus Joe Rogan,
11:46 I like my office, I'll be able to move back.
11:48 - We'll be good, right on.
11:49 - Let's go, man.
11:50 - I'll do it again.
11:51 - God bless, you got it.
11:52 - Let's do it.
11:53 (upbeat music)
11:55 (upbeat music)
11:59 (upbeat music)
12:01 (upbeat music)
12:04 (upbeat music)
