00:00 This quiet street in Balmain is the latest crime scene in a spate of killings linked
00:07 to Sydney's underworld. A woman called emergency services yesterday saying a man was being
00:12 assaulted on the footpath. When police and paramedics arrived they found the 29-year-old
00:17 bleeding from stab wounds.
00:19 He's not believed to be from the area. We believe he's a low-level associate of organised
00:25 crime.
00:26 Police say his attackers fled in a white Jeep, which was later found burnt out in Five
00:30 Dock with a gun inside.
00:32 The two males who were involved in this incident are described as Maori and Pacific Islander
00:37 appearance. They were seen fleeing from the burning vehicle and they then entered another
00:43 vehicle which was a light-coloured Toyota Hilux.
00:47 The victim was taken to hospital but later died. Police say it's too early to tell whether
00:52 the killing is related to a series of recent gangland murders. The violence started after
00:57 a hit on drug kingpin Alan Meridian in Bondi Junction last month.
01:02 That's something that we will explore, those connections, but at this stage we can't confirm
01:08 that or deny that.
01:09 The Premier insists police will bring an end to the violence.
01:12 We're giving them the resources that they need and they will confront this vicious and
01:16 violent behaviour across the streets of Sydney.
01:19 The government's also announced a new taskforce to target and seize the wealth of senior organised
01:24 crime figures. It's been described as the 'gang squad with calculators' and it will
01:29 eventually be funded by the proceeds of crime that it seizes.
