00:00 A 21-member multi-party delegation of MPs of the opposition's Indian National Developmental
00:11 Inclusive Alliance met Manipur Governor Anusuya Uychi today and shared their experience.
00:17 The 21-member delegation of the opposition arrived in the state for a two-day visit to
00:22 assess the ethnic strife and violence that has been ongoing since May 4.
00:27 After the meeting with the Governor, Congress MP Adhiranjan Choudhury, part of the delegation
00:32 stated that they shared their first-hand experiences and observations from their visit to the relief
00:38 centres.
00:39 The Governor expressed a concern and agreed with the suggestion put forward by the delegation.
00:43 The MPs also submitted a memorandum to the Governor, asking her to restore peace and
00:48 normalcy in the state.
00:50 In their memorandum, they demanded urgent rehabilitation and resettlement of the affected
00:55 people to bring peace and harmony to Manipur and also slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi
01:00 over his silence, showing "grazen indifference" to the ongoing situation in the north-eastern
01:05 state.
01:06 "The continued internet ban for the last three months is aiding the unsubstantiated
01:10 rumours which is adding to the existing mistrust among the communities," the memorandum said.
01:15 "We are also requested to apprise the Union Government of the complete breakdown of law
01:20 and order in Manipur for the last 89 days so as to enable them to intervene in the precarious
01:25 situation in Manipur to restore peace and normalcy," it said.
01:29 The document also stressed that the failure of both the central and state governments
01:34 to protect the lives and properties of the people of the two communities is apparent
01:38 in the figures of more than 140 deaths, over 160 as per official records, over 500 injuries,
01:45 burning of more than 5,000 houses and internal displacement of over 60,000 people.
01:52 The opposition delegation's aim during the visit was to bring about "psychological
01:55 healing" for the affected people.
01:58 The ruling party BJP criticised the opposition's visit, claiming that the centre was ready
02:02 for a discussion on Manipur in Parliament while the opposition was avoiding it.
02:09 The opposition delegation visited several relief camps in Imphal, Moirang and Bishnupur
02:14 districts and Church, Jandipur and met scores of victims of ethnic clashes from both the
02:19 warring communities and returned back to Delhi today.
