00:37 Number 10 - Inland Taipan

00:42 Also known as the "Fear Snake", the Inland Taipan is one of the world's most venomous

00:47 snakes.

00:49 The bite of an Inland Taipan delivers a veritable witch's brew of toxins.

00:55 Based on the median lethal dose value in mice, the venom of the Inland Taipan is by far the

01:00 most toxic of any snake.

01:03 Much more so than even that of sea snakes, and it has the most toxic venom of any reptile

01:08 when tested on human heart cell culture.

01:13 The Inland Taipan is a specialist hunter of mammals, so its venom is specially adapted

01:18 to kill warm-blooded species.

01:22 It is estimated that one bite possesses enough lethality to kill at least 100 fully grown

01:27 men.

01:30 And depending on the nature of the bite, it has the potential to kill someone in as little

01:33 as 30 to 45 minutes if left untreated.

01:39 It is an extremely fast and agile snake that can strike instantly with extreme accuracy,

01:46 often striking multiple times in the same attack.

01:49 And it envenomates in almost every case.

01:53 A bite from this variety of Taipan often causes paralysis of the victim's nervous system and

01:58 clots the blood.

02:02 Respiratory paralysis can set in anywhere from 2 to 6 hours after you are bitten.

02:08 The yearly mortality rate caused by a bite from the Inland Taipan is estimated at 2700

02:13 people worldwide.

02:15 They change the color of their skin for the thermoregulation, allowing them to absorb

02:21 more light in colder months.

02:27 Saw-Scaled Viper

02:28 The Saw-Scaled Viper is considered as one of the world's deadliest snakes, as it is

02:37 believed to be responsible for more human fatalities than all other snakes put together.

02:43 These snakes have a stout body with a pear-shaped head which is distinct from the neck.

02:49 Unlike most snakes, the viper moves sideways, side-winding locomotion.

02:55 As they become more agitated, this stridulating behavior becomes faster and louder.

03:01 This display is thought to have evolved as a means of limiting water loss, such as might

03:06 occur when hissing.

03:10 When striking, they may over-bounce and end up moving towards their aggressor, an unusual

03:14 behavior for snakes.

03:19 They are nocturnal and feed on mammals, birds, other snakes, lizards, amphibians, scorpions,

03:25 and centipedes.

03:30 Saw-scaled vipers are considered to be one of the deadliest snakes of the world.

03:35 Because they are often found in populated areas and a lack of readily accessible antivenom

03:39 in rural areas adds to their lethality.

03:44 Saw-scaled vipers can live for up to 23 years.

03:49 Up to 80% of these adults climb up bushes and trees when it rains.

05:42 Allopidae, endemic to forests from India through Southeast Asia.

05:48 It is the world's longest venomous snake.

05:53 In India, the King Cobra is not only revered and worshipped but also feared as they are

05:58 one of the most venomous snakes.

06:02 In one bite, a King Cobra delivers a tremendous amount of neurotoxins that induces paralysis.

06:09 Although they are shy and avoid confrontation with humans, King Cobras are some of the most

06:14 dangerous snakes in the world when provoked.

06:19 They are, however, very caring towards their offspring as they are the only snakes that

06:23 build a nest for their eggs and guard them till they hatch.

06:28 A female King Cobra is a very dedicated parent, an unusual trait among snakes.

06:35 They primarily eat other snakes, including the venomous ones.

06:40 However, when food is scarce, they also eat lizards, birds, and rodents.

06:46 A King Cobra's venom is so strong that it can kill an elephant in just a few hours and

06:51 can cause death in 50-60% of untreated human cases.

06:58 King Cobras are monogamous, which means they mate with only one partner for life.

07:11 The Black Mamba is the second longest venomous snake after the King Cobra.

07:17 They are known for their large size, quickness, and extremely potent venom, making them one

07:32 They have a coffin-shaped head and can vary in colors from olive, yellowish-brown, khaki,

07:38 and gunmetal, but they are rarely black.

07:43 If they are disturbed or cornered, Black Mambas will attack with repeated bites.

07:50 Their venom is extremely toxic, and just two drops are reportedly enough to kill most humans.

07:57 A Black Mamba's venom attacks both the nervous system and the heart, and most bites are fatal,

08:10 The Belcher's Sea Snake

08:15 Also known as the faint-banded sea snake, the Belcher's Sea Snake is extremely venomous.

08:26 The Belcher's Sea Snake is of moderate size, ranging from 0.5 to 1 meter, about 20 to 40

08:32 inches in adult length.

08:36 Its thin body is usually chrome yellowish in color, with dark greenish crossbands.

08:45 The head is short and has bands of the same colors.

08:48 Its mouth is very small but suitable for aquatic life.

11:09 It then releases the prey and waits for the venom to take effect, before taking its meal.

11:16 Its paralyzing venom causes hemorrhaging in blood vessels and muscle tissues and inhibits

11:20 breathing.

11:23 This bite is lethal in more than 80% of untreated cases and can kill a human in under an hour.

11:39 Also known as chain vipers, Russell's Viper is one of the most venomous snakes in the

11:45 One bite from which can cause excessive bleeding.

11:50 This also makes it one of the most dangerous snakes and is responsible for the most snake

11:54 bite incidents and deaths among all the venomous snakes.

11:59 Deep yellow, tan or brown in color, with three series of dark brown spots, each of which

12:05 has a black ring around it, that run the length of the body.

12:10 These snakes can grow to a maximum of about 1.5 meters.

12:15 These snakes are very strong and can react violently to being picked up.

12:20 They will either bite and let go or hold on for many seconds.

12:25 Their venom is highly lethal to humans in doses of 40-70 mg.

12:31 A bite can cause excessive bleeding, particularly in the gums and urine, a rapid drop in blood

12:36 pressure and heart rate, blistering, necrosis, vomiting, facial swelling, kidney failure

12:46 A bite can also cause severe tissue damage and around 29% of survivors suffer damage

13:29 Eastern Green Mamba

13:34 The Eastern Green Mamba is a highly venomous snake species of the Mamba genus Dendroaspis

13:39 native to the coastal regions of southern East Africa.

13:44 It has a slender build with bright green underparts and yellow-green underparts.

13:50 The adult female averages around 2 meters (6.6 feet) in length and the male is slightly

13:56 smaller.

13:59 A shy and elusive species, the Eastern Green Mamba is rarely seen.

14:05 This elusiveness is usually attributed to the species' green coloration which blends

14:09 with its environment and its arboreal lifestyle.

14:15 Like the Black Mamba, they will flatten their necks into a narrow hood as a defensive posture.

14:22 The venom causes necrosis, or the destruction of the tissue.

14:27 It's like a rotten banana, you might see a bite on the hand, which has a bit of swelling

14:31 and a couple of black spots on it.

14:35 But underneath, there's tissue damage all the way up to the shoulder and even into the

14:39 chest.

14:41 So the next time you see a snake, remember that they would prefer to be by themselves

14:46 and whatever you do, do not try to handle them unless you are a trained snake wrangler.
