Over 500 stranded passengers reported in Manila North Port; PPA assures security
Transcript
00:00 Thousands of passengers are still stranded in ports nationwide due to
00:04 Typhoon Egei. Because of this the Philippine Red Cross various shipping
00:07 lines and the Manila North Port came in to stranded passengers. Karen Villanda
00:12 tells us more.
00:15 Corsini is one of more than 500 stranded passengers at the Manila North
00:20 Port together with her husband and two grandchildren. She said they went to the
00:25 port yesterday but their trip going to Bacolod was canceled. They cannot go
00:29 back to Bulacan because they already spent 3,500 pesos in taxi fare alone
00:34 just going here.
00:36 If this will be canceled, we don't know yet because we don't have an update on when our trip will be.
00:43 We don't have any money to pay them because we don't have enough money.
00:50 We only have money to get there.
00:53 They said our trip will be on Saturday at 5pm.
00:57 If our trip is on Saturday, we will be here for a few more days.
01:00 Since last night, Red Cross, the shipping lines and the North Port have been
01:05 serving meals to the stranded passengers. The Philippine Ports Authority also set
01:10 up film showing for the passengers. The PPA recorded more than 500 stranded
01:15 today which is higher than yesterday's estimated 400 individuals. A passenger
01:20 even lost his wallet with 17,000 pesos in cash.
01:24 When I went to the port, I brought my wallet and I went to the village.
01:29 When I got out, I was caught. When I got out, I ate cup noodles.
01:34 After eating cup noodles, I looked at my wallet and it was gone.
01:39 I returned it immediately. When I got back, it was gone.
01:42 I called them and if they have a conscience, they should return it because I also need money.
01:48 Even my ID is there.
01:50 Despite this incident, the PPA ensures the port's security.
01:55 Our Port Police is there in coordination with the Philippine Coast Guard,
02:00 our security forces and personnel in the port.
02:06 This incident was an isolated incident but we will check it and we will make sure it won't happen again.
02:15 Philippine Coast Guard personnel are also present to inspect the North Port.
02:20 Based on the record of the PCG, around 11,000 passengers have been stranded in the whole country
02:26 in the two-day onslaught of Typhoon Egei.
02:30 94 ports have stopped operations due to the no-sail zone policy.
02:34 The time has improved, especially in Bicol and Eastern Visayas.
02:39 Some ships are already starting to travel.
02:43 Maybe it's just a delay, not a stranded.
02:46 But here, we are checking if it can be done until later in the afternoon
02:50 when the forecast shows that it will be a storm and there is a lift here in Metro Manila.
02:54 That's the reason why our countrymen are waiting here in the National Capital Region.
03:00 The PPA reminded passengers to contact their shipping lines before going to the port,
03:05 especially when there is a threat of typhoon.
03:08 Karen Villanda for the Nation.
