The Prime Minister acknowledged that the hurt of the victims is not just historical but continues today as “every four days someone tragically loses their life as a result of what has happened in the past.” Report by Covellm. 00:00 I believe what has happened has been an appalling scandal.
00:03 I think thousands of people, obviously many in the room
00:05 today and others that the chair referred to who are watching,
00:09 have suffered for decades.
00:11 And they've suffered a layer of injustices, in fact.
00:15 And it hasn't just affected those people who have been
00:19 directly impacted and affected.
00:21 It's affected their families and friends and carers as well.
00:24 So it goes far beyond those who are directly impacted.
00:27 And as you just said, this is not just about historic wrongs.
00:31 People are suffering and being impacted today.
00:34 And I believe every four days, someone tragically
00:37 loses their life as a result of what has happened in the past.
00:41 And as I've been reading the testimonies of those involved,
00:46 affected, and infected, it's been a very moving experience
00:50 for me.
00:50 And I commend everyone who shared their testimonies
00:53 for their bravery.
00:54 Can't have been an easy thing to do,
00:55 but it's enabled this important work to take place.
00:59 And indeed, I'm pleased to be able to be here to contribute
01:02 to that important work.
