00:00 Good morning, let's do sports now. On the AM show with me, Mufti Awanabila, Ablai Kumasi
00:05 and Santi Kodakor continue to dominate the airwaves here in their country following their
00:09 decision to reappoint Dr. Prosper Nathi Ogum as their head coach of the team. Prosper Nathi
00:15 Ogum won the Ghana Premier League for the Porcupine Warriors for the first time in about
00:20 eight seasons but resigned in July last year. Well, the leadership of the club has decided
00:27 to reappoint him to steer the technical affairs of the team and former Black Stars defender
00:32 John Opensel has thrown his weight behind him to succeed. He also says it is important
00:38 that the leadership of the Porcupine Warriors gives him the maximum support to secure the
00:43 results supporters are seeking for.
00:45 I think Ogum is doing so well. He started from Wafaa, we all saw what he did. He came
00:52 to Porto Cor to win the league and he built a very good structure over there with his
00:57 players. Also with his philosophy and his understanding of the game, I think the supporters
01:04 were behind him, the players were behind him. That's why I always say never close doors
01:10 because he left the door open for him that he can come in any time. So now the time has
01:15 come for him to come again. You know he has a history with the club, a very good one,
01:20 but repeating history sometimes is difficult. But I think he's a coach with his words, which
01:27 he believes in his ability. We all know that when it comes to coaching he's doing very,
01:32 very well. I have full confidence that no coach will go for a job that he's not ready
01:38 for. I believe Coach Ogum is ready to go for the task that ahead because Porto Cor is Porto
01:45 Cor is a demanding club, so when you are going you prepare, which he has that zeal to go
01:52 and pick up that way. So as a coach I wish him all the best and I believe he can do it
01:59 well. But like I said, he's an example to a lot of coaches, a lot of people that you
02:05 always leave the door open. So when you go, the door will be open for you to come back
02:10 again.
02:11 Now the bit as well about what creates a solid environment for a coach to work. You have
02:21 been on various legs of the, you've operated on various arms of the football value chain.
02:29 You have operated from the ownership level and you have done, you've played and you've
02:34 managed as well. From where you sit, what would you want to see the ownership of the
02:42 club do for this man so that he can get the job done like he's always known to do?
02:48 Yeah, I think first they have to allow him to do, if the club Porto Cor has their own
02:57 DNA or their own philosophy, system in place, then the coach needs to go by that rules and
03:10 then also system in place. Then they should allow him to pick the players that will fit
03:15 his own system, his own philosophy to build a team because he being the head coach, he
03:20 becomes a manager. So he manages the team and he will buy players that he thinks they
03:26 are good to play for such a team.
03:29 Porto Cor is not a team that you can pick any player to play. You need players who have
03:34 a great attitude, who take responsibilities on the field to make things work. So they
03:41 should do whatever they can to make the coach happy and give him everything that he needs
03:45 so that he can have his place to work. Because we've seen him doing it before, but if he's
03:51 happy and he's getting all the necessary equipment he needs, all the players he needs
03:58 to start, I think everything will go well with him. So they should give him maximum
04:03 respect and respect his office as well.
04:08 Jumping to the speaking to my colleague Natalia Arto on Joy SportsLink last Saturday. Two
04:14 great Olympics in the latter part of the Ghana Premier League last season, the Dade boys
04:19 decided to move their home venue to the Uwafa Park in Soka Kope. But this year, they intend
04:25 to move their venue to Teshi where McDonnell constructed a new AstroTurf. We understand
04:32 that a former MP of the area, Okobo, engaged McDonnell to construct a facility for the
04:39 people of the area. Now Great Olympics is considering using that as their home venue
04:44 in the new Ghana Premier League season, expected to start in the middle of September. We hear
04:50 from Okobo who's been speaking to my colleague Natalia Arto.
04:54 I just cannot describe my excitement. Some few years ago, I happened to watch a football
05:02 match at the McDonnell Stadium at LA. I was very impressed with what I saw. And so I asked
05:08 a friend, "Who did this?" And I was told that it was Dr. McCauley, the McDonnell Foundation.
05:14 I'm like, "So what about Lejuku? What about Teshi?" So I started exploring ways to get
05:20 to Dr. McCauley. It was a struggle in the beginning, but I happened to know Coleman,
05:26 the CEO of Wembley Sports Complex. So Coleman told me, "Look, I'll take you to McDonnell."
05:33 So I happened to meet my man and I told him, "Look, senior, I learnt your parents come
05:37 from LA or whatever, but your grandparents also come from Teshi." And I had to use that
05:42 anger because I was trying to find out why he chose to invest in LA and why in Otesha.
05:48 And he told me, "Look, I'm a son of the coast. Any community that approaches me, I see what
05:52 I can do. So doc, I'll see what I can do for you." And after all the negotiations they
05:57 took, McDonnell agreed to build the Teshi McDonnell Sports Complex worth over $3 million.
06:04 And I'm happy that the things we talked about, we talked about a complex that has a football
06:10 arena and about 15 seaters capacity.
06:14 15,000 you mean?
06:15 15,000.
06:16 Very well.
06:17 A spectator stand or area, long tennis courts, a boxing auditorium. I mean, he described
06:23 all that. Later we got McDonnell, the Wembley Sports Complex, we got the architect, I saw
06:30 the drawings. I was so excited just by the drawings. And I can say that in 2020, when
06:37 I was then a member of parliament, my last year as the MP, Dr. Makole himself came here
06:44 with some sons of the land, the Lejuku Teshi family. Lai Kingston himself was here that
06:50 day and we had something like a prayer and saw cutting and gave our blessing to Dr. Makole
06:56 to start the project. Many doubted whether we could really do such a thing. But today
07:02 here we are. I mean, all glory to God and all thanksgiving to Dr. Makole and to Coleman
07:09 for such a fantastic job. I'm so overwhelmed because in the next few weeks, on the 26th
07:14 of August, Teshi is about to host its annual festival games, which normally it plays with
07:20 Nungwa, a sister community. And this is the biggest game or activity for the year. And
07:26 all indications show that we are about to, or it is possible to host that game and use
07:33 it to open this particular stadium. I'm also excited because there are talks with some
07:41 elders in the Oli club to see whether we can have them play their local rivals across the
07:51 folk on the day. And this is to announce this particular facility to the whole coast.
07:59 Now let's talk about Midyama FC and Dreams FC. They will participate in the next edition
08:06 of the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup competitions, respectively. The Confederation
08:12 of African Football, CAF, would later today hold a draw in its headquarters, Cairo, where
08:18 Midyama FC would know its opponents for the CAF Champions League, whilst Dreams FC would
08:24 also be paired with its opponent later today. The draw will have the Confederation Cup draw
08:31 taking place first before that of the CAF Champions League. 54 teams from 42 member
08:38 associations of CAF are participating in this year's edition of the CAF Champions League
08:44 and Midyama FC is likely to be drawn against one of the lowest ranked teams in the competition
08:50 as they participate in the CAF Champions League for the first time in the history of the club.
08:55 These FC winners of the FA Cup after defeating Kim Faisal in the grand finale would also
09:01 be going to Africa for the first time in the history of the club after each board agreed
09:05 that they should participate in the competition. Champions of the Ghana Premier League, Midyama
09:10 FC, after beating Tamale City 3-0 in the grand final day of the Ghana Premier League season,
09:17 would also be participating in the CAF Champions League for the first time in its history.
09:20 They have played in the Confederation Cup before, where they made it to the group stages.
09:25 They won the FA Cup in 2013 and 2015 and they played in the CAF Confederation Cup. However,
09:33 this is a step higher than the CAF Confederation Cup as they will play in the CAF Champions
09:39 League while Dream Selfie will be in the CAF Confederation Cup.
09:46 That's your AM Sports for now. We do have more sports stories on myjoyonline.com. But
09:52 as I leave, let me say happy birthday to former Black Stars assistant coach Ibrahim Ntanko,
09:57 and who is also the current coach of the Black Meteors. He led them to participate in the
10:04 CAF and the 23 Cup of Nations that took place in Morocco, a competition Morocco won. Happy
10:10 birthday Ibrahim Ntanko. Continue to be a friend of Joy Sports and continue to be always
10:16 available for our shows. Thank you very much. Head on to myjoyonline.com and read some more
10:21 sports stories. The show continues right after this.
