00:13 Good morning, you're watching New Day, all the news you need and more.
00:18 A secret party amid a global pandemic, that's the theme of upcoming Cinemalaya entry,
00:23 when this is all over.
00:24 The youth drama film stars Juan Carlos as "The Guy"
00:27 who desperately wants to flee the country but cannot do so due to the pandemic.
00:31 He then meets a group of misfit condo residents and helps them plan the party
00:36 in exchange for connections with the U.S. Embassy.
00:39 Joining us right now in the studio to tell us more are director Kevin Mayuga
00:43 and cast members Jory Bell Agoto, Rene Dominique and Gico O'Malley.
00:47 Good morning, everybody.
00:48 Hey, good morning.
00:49 It's great to have you.
00:50 I think perhaps fittingly so, I'm playing catch up with this film, you know,
00:54 it's very of the moment in the sense that it's a film for now,
00:58 it's tackling a period, this strange period that we all went through over the last year,
01:02 last couple of years ago.
01:04 Drek, give us the broad strokes of the film.
01:06 Well, it's a youth drama, you pretty much said a lot of the story,
01:10 but I feel like it's such a fun, looks like a party film, but it goes deeper than that.
01:16 Right, I wanted to sort of try to take that apart, you know, like I said,
01:21 I had a quick look at the trailer and for me it was like, oh, okay,
01:24 it's today's retelling of Superbad or Project X, it's a party film,
01:30 it's a youth party film, but really it's much more than that, obviously.
01:33 It's much more than that.
01:34 I think part of our themes are like privilege, belongingness, class,
01:40 but not overtly so it still has this whole youth party rave culture that we're going for.
01:46 So, you know, it's going to be fun, it's going to be a fun ride,
01:48 but obviously it's not just for laughs.
01:50 Definitely, and we have a great cast to go along and stars with it, the whole film.
01:55 Yeah, they're not bad, I guess, you know, they're sort of, you know,
01:58 bro, yo, I'm a huge fan, obviously, you must get that all the time, Gico.
02:04 Yes, for sure, people suddenly shout like sheesh.
02:07 Right, sheesh, I'm so glad you woke up so early, pare, in the morning to be with us here, pare.
02:12 I mean, what's it been like working on this film? It must have been loads of fun, man.
02:16 Yeah, actually it's my first full-length film, so it's really serious acting compared to our skits in BGAG.
02:23 Really? That's not serious?
02:24 For sure, yeah.
02:26 So it's a whole other type of art piece, so it's really fun.
02:30 Okay, well, Renée Joriba, tell me about your experience.
02:34 Go ahead and fill me in on what it was like to work on an exciting project like this.
02:40 Well, actually, this is my first full-length as well, and it was a lot of fun, especially on set.
02:48 Even direct Kevin, he never gets mad on set. I don't see him getting mad, so it was fun.
02:55 And working with Jake is also fun, right?
02:58 He's like a breath of fresh air every time.
03:01 Not that it's not serious, but he's really fun every time.
03:11 Like, when we're rehearsing a take, he's really fun on set, even if the scenes are heavy.
03:19 Even the casts.
03:21 This kind of interaction obviously gives me a glimpse into what it was like working on the set.
03:28 But more than that, it's a movie that talks about more important things.
03:33 This isn't your first rodeo direct. You've had the opportunity to be part of Cinemalaya via shorts.
03:40 I believe it's your first full-length, if I understand correctly.
03:42 Yeah, it's nice to be back here, because two years ago I was here for a short film called "Ate Oji."
03:47 Now, this is my first full-length film, and it's great to be working with such talented people,
03:53 along with the crew, for such a big project.
03:57 Let's talk about the twists and turns of this particular film.
04:02 We don't want to let too much of the cat out of the bag, so to speak.
04:05 We want people to come and see the film, and I think many people, myself included, are intrigued.
04:10 There are some themes here. Privilege, class.
04:15 Obviously, there's a certain level of subversiveness, maybe,
04:20 organizing this big rave in the middle of this strange period
04:25 where we weren't supposed to be having parties and that sort of thing.
04:28 What are some of the other themes that are tackled here?
04:31 I think the main thing that we're talking about is this person's need for belongingness,
04:39 as well as realizing that maybe it's luck that separates all of us,
04:44 but we all have a choice on how to treat each other.
04:49 We all obviously have this fantastic cast here. Not joining us this morning, Juan Carlos.
04:53 What's it like working with such a talent that's really made waves?
04:58 Juan Carlos has his own big energy of it, especially working with the other cast members.
05:04 How was your experience working with Juan Carlos, Renee?
05:07 Now's your chance. He's not here to defend himself. Go ahead. Let him rip.
05:10 It was really fun. As someone who's also in the music industry like him,
05:14 it was really fun to connect with him and work with him.
05:17 He's a very giving actor, and he's just really fun to be around.
05:20 The whole cast, actually. It felt like, Byron, we were just a "Bercada" who's just creating a film together.
05:25 It was a really fun experience working with him, and I have so much respect for him as an actor.
05:30 He's not bad. He's kind of okay. He's missing out on not being.
05:35 Not here to defend himself, but also not here to deflect the praise that he so well deserves.
05:42 Guys, we don't have a whole lot of time, but I'd like you to take the opportunity to invite everyone, please, to catch this film.
05:48 It's obviously going to be a fun ride, but there's a lot more to it than meets the eye.
05:52 Director?
05:53 Please catch our film when this is all over. It's premiering in Cinemalaya.
05:57 We have our premiere night on August 6, Sunday. It'll be playing in Ayala Malls through the whole week.
06:04 We hope to catch you then. I hope you guys get to see it.
06:07 There you go. Sheesh! Thank you for waking me up so early, guys.
06:11 Thank you for having us.
06:12 I wish we had more time, but really, I'm sure we're going to have you back to talk about the success of this film.
06:16 Thank you for coming in this morning and inviting everyone.
06:19 That was the cast and director of "When This Is All Over."
