00:00 They say only a lion can kill a lion, but mighty and strong as they are, even these
00:06 wildcats sometimes become the victims of their intended prey.
00:10 There are in fact a handful of animals who are big, brave and strong enough to put up
00:14 a fight that can end very badly for the lion.
00:17 Are you ready to meet the king of the jungle's most fearsome opponents?
00:21 Hello there and welcome to another episode of Forever Green.
00:24 Today we're counting down the few animals that can actually kill a lion.
00:29 If you're wondering whether a tiger would win a showdown against a lion, you'll definitely
00:33 want to stick around for number one, because the jungle may well have a new king.
00:38 Alright, let's get started.
00:41 Number 7, Giraffe.
00:46 Can a giraffe seriously kill a lion?
00:49 You bet it can.
00:51 Thanks to their towering legs and long necks, giraffes are the world's tallest mammals.
00:58 The giraffe's legs alone are taller than many humans and allowing them to reach speeds of
01:03 up to 35 miles per hour.
01:07 And the horns on a giraffe's head aren't just for show.
01:12 They could use those things by literally swinging their heads at their enemies like a golf club,
01:16 causing enough force to easily shatter an adult lion's bones.
01:21 Besides that, a male giraffe can weigh up to 1,800 pounds, which is about four times
01:26 the weight of a male lion.
01:29 And although they're not as agile as lions, if they manage to land a kick with one of
01:33 their powerful legs in just the right place, it may well be over for the lion.
01:40 Don't believe us?
01:41 Check out this clip of a mother giraffe who killed one of the lionesses who attacked her
01:45 baby by stomping it to death.
01:48 And if you think this showdown ends badly for the lion, wait until you see it face off
01:52 with a tiger at number one.
01:54 Pop quiz, if you put these four in a cage, who would come out alive?
01:59 Go ahead, leave us your answer in the comments below.
02:02 We'll wait.
02:06 Number six, buffalo.
02:10 Lions are notorious buffalo hunters, but a single lion killing an adult buffalo is unheard
02:16 of.
02:17 Believe it or not, buffalo are actually considered far more dangerous than lions.
02:23 And even entire lion prides have been known to attack a single adult buffalo and still
02:28 fail to kill it.
02:31 And since buffalo travel in herds that are far more numerous than lion prides, a single
02:35 lion will almost never attack a single buffalo unless it's a young calf.
02:41 Even if they do put together a coordinated attack, lions must be very wary as buffalo
02:47 are known to get very aggressive when provoked and will do anything to protect their own.
02:55 Buffalo are just way too powerful and can easily inflict a wound that would cripple
02:58 or even kill a lion.
03:03 They're so tough, they've been known to ruthlessly chase down and kill human hunters.
03:10 Now if a half-ton buffalo can kill a human with a gun, just imagine what it could do
03:15 to a lion.
03:18 And if you don't think they could put up a fight, just look at this clip of a buffalo
03:22 flinging a lion over its shoulder and into the air like it's nothing.
03:30 Number five, hyenas.
03:36 It's not exactly common, but a hyena could kill a lion.
03:40 But how?
03:41 If they had him by the balls.
03:43 No, this is no joke.
03:46 What hyenas lack in teeth and strength compared to the lion, they make up for with smarts.
03:53 Especially the skilled hyena who bites a buffalo right in his privates and starts eating him
03:58 alive.
04:00 Keep in mind, even lions often don't come out alive after a confrontation with a buffalo.
04:07 Now a single hyena would probably never be able to take on a fearsome lion, but it's
04:12 incredible what a pack of hungry hyenas will brave for food.
04:17 Check out this lion, who almost regretted his decision to do a bit of exploring in the
04:21 wet savanna when he was attacked by an enormous pack of starving hyenas.
04:27 Outnumbered 20 to 1, the lion began questioning his rank in the food chain as the hyenas laughed
04:32 and crackled while trying to smartly avoid the mighty wildcat's jaws and bite pieces
04:36 out of his behind.
04:39 The lion was beginning to question whether he'd make it out alive, but thankfully, another
04:43 friend with a mane showed up just in time, causing the hyenas to scatter.
04:49 It's true then that even for 20 hyenas, a pair of male lions is too much to take on.
04:55 But it's likely the lion would have met the same fate as the buffalo had he not been so
04:58 lucky.
05:02 Before we move on to our next fearsome lion killer, we have a quick challenge that'll
05:06 just take 5 seconds to complete.
05:08 So here's the deal.
05:09 Leave us a like, smash that subscribe button and turn on notifications, and you'll win
05:14 10 years of incredible luck.
05:17 Try it, it actually works.
05:22 Number 4 - Rhino
05:27 Rhinoceroses are lions' natural prey, but even lions rarely attack adults.
05:33 Some weak, injured and old rhino adults have reportedly been killed by lions.
05:38 But rhino calves are usually the wildcat's main targets, and it's obvious why.
05:45 A white rhino could weigh up to 5,000 pounds, which is easily 10 times the weight of an
05:49 adult lion.
05:52 Rhinos are also thick-skinned, and their large horns have scraped bodies on cars like it's
05:56 nothing.
05:57 If they can do that to metal, well, the lions don't want to find out what it will do to
06:02 flesh and bone.
06:06 Even an elephant is wary of that horn.
06:08 Although rhinos mostly lose territorial disputes with elephants, there have been cases where
06:12 herds of rhinos even chased off an elephant.
06:17 Rhinos aren't just protective of themselves, they're protective of each other as well.
06:24 So if a predator approaches a herd of dangerous rhinos and can't frighten them into running
06:28 to isolate a member and pick them off, then they will usually just give up, because they
06:32 know very well that a single blog from a rhino's horn can mean the end of their lives.
06:41 Number 3 - Hippopotamus
06:46 Round and tumbly as they may appear, hippos are often cited as the most dangerous land
06:51 mammal in Africa, killing an estimated 500 people a year.
06:56 Now they won't go out of their way to attack a lion, but hippos are highly territorial
07:01 and won't shy away from a fight against anyone, not even a lion.
07:07 A single lion knows all too well it can't take on a hippo.
07:11 Hippos size each other up by opening their mouths up to 150 degrees wide, stretching
07:17 it up to 5 feet length.
07:19 Meanwhile, a lion's jaws are hinged, so it can only open its mouth 11 inches.
07:26 Even if a lion could open its mouth wide enough, a hippo's hide is still way too tough and
07:30 thick for a lion to do any real amount of damage.
07:34 However, the opposite is true if a hippo were to bite a lion, at 650 PSI.
07:41 The lion's bite is peanuts compared to hippos, with their incredibly strong 1825 PSI bite.
07:50 Hippo only needs to land a single bite and it's over for the mighty wildcat.
07:56 And if you thought speed would be an issue, well, hippos can actually run up to 30 miles
08:01 per hour.
08:02 Who knew?
08:04 Case in point, hunting a hippo may be the last thing a lion does.
08:11 Number 2.
08:13 Elephant.
08:16 When lions hunt elephants, they usually target youngsters or females, and they almost always
08:20 attack from behind.
08:22 Care to guess why?
08:24 Just take a look at this shocking but incredible video of an angry elephant ramming and killing
08:28 a buffalo with its horns.
08:33 That's right, if you thought the earlier video of a buffalo throwing a lion over its shoulder
08:36 looked effortless, well, just imagine what an elephant can do.
08:42 In brute strength, elephants are the strongest mammals and the strongest land animals in
08:46 the world.
08:48 African elephants can weigh up to 14,000 pounds and are so strong, they can carry almost twice
08:54 their body weight.
08:57 And although most elephants can't run faster than 15 miles per hour, a few African elephants
09:02 have surprisingly reached top speeds of up to 25 miles per hour.
09:07 The lion may be a lot faster, but one of them attacking an elephant is about as effective
09:12 as trying to cut down a tree.
09:14 It will waste its energy and eventually the elephant will crush it or break it in half.
09:19 Sure, there have been a few famous cases of lions killing elephants, but only when there
09:25 was a huge pride of around 30 of them.
09:28 Smaller lion prides wouldn't dare attack them, and a single lion will just make the elephant
09:32 mad.
09:35 Which is why most of the time when they see an elephant, they keep their distance, or
09:39 run.
09:42 Number 1.
09:43 Tiger.
09:44 When a tiger fights, it fights to kill.
09:51 Being a little more social, lions try to win without having to fight if they can resort
09:55 to intimidation, wrestling and rolling first.
09:58 They do not get serious from the beginning.
10:02 But a tiger does not win by intimidation and social challenge.
10:06 It goes into a fight all or nothing.
10:10 So how would the two match up in a standoff?
10:15 Well tigers are known to weigh up to 800 pounds, while large African lions weigh up to 550
10:21 pounds, while that's hundreds of pounds more.
10:26 It's important to note that the tiger is not a lot bigger than a lion.
10:30 This indicates the tiger has far greater muscle density and therefore a lot more strength.
10:37 Some even say a tiger is easily 10 times stronger than a lion.
10:41 Unlike lions hunting prides for more efficiency, tigers single-handedly hunt and kill large
10:46 adult buffaloes, weighing up to a ton all on their own.
10:51 In historical accounts where lions and tigers have fought in captivity, the tiger often
10:56 came out the victor.
10:58 The most recent account happened in 2011, when a tiger at the Ankara Zoo attacked a
11:02 lion after finding a gap in the fence separating their cages.
11:07 Officials said the tiger severed the lion's jugular vein in a single stroke with its paw,
11:12 leaving the animal dying in a pool of blood.
11:15 In 1857, a tiger at the Bromwich Zoo broke into a lion's cage and succeeded in ripping
11:20 up its stomach, killing the lion within just a few minutes.
11:25 Bottom line, the jungle has a new king.
11:31 And that's it for today's video.
11:33 Which other animals do you think can potentially kill a lion?
11:36 Let us know in the comments below.
