00:36 Starship Enterprise and spotlights classic characters

00:39 like Captain Pike, Mr. Spock, and Lieutenant Uhura, as well

00:42 as new favorites, like the ship's pilot, Erika Ortegas,

00:45 and security chief, La'Anne Noonien-Singh.

00:48 Today, I am thrilled to share with you a special preview of

00:52 "Strange New Worlds" epic second season, which is

00:58 Trek." Coming up, I sit down with "Strange New Worlds" stars

03:44 Oh, thanks, buddy, for having us.

03:46 You know, a lot of modern series

03:48 feature serialized storytelling.

03:50 But "Strange New Worlds" is a callback

03:52 to that episodic style of storytelling

03:55 that was so prevalent in the 20th century.

03:58 And this really allows for the cast

04:00 to play in so many different genres,

04:04 like horror and adventure and comedy.

04:08 And you do it all under the umbrella

04:10 of telling Star Trek stories.

04:13 I would love for you to talk a little bit about what

04:15 it is like to experience all of the different worlds

04:19 that make up "Strange New Worlds."

04:23 Anson and I have been having a blast finding comedy.

04:27 Right, Anson?

04:28 Hasn't that been fun?

04:29 That's been kind of a journey.

04:30 That, combined with the freedom that Akiva and Henry

04:34 have instilled in the show to explore not just storyline,

04:37 but genre from episode to episode, has made it--

04:41 you can imagine, if it's fun to watch, how fun it is to make.

04:45 Is there anything from season one

04:48 that you really were excited about, that you loved,

04:50 that you hope we will see more of in season two?

04:54 Well, buckle up for season two, is all I can say.

04:58 There is a-- you know, everything from season one

05:01 we bring into season two, and then some.

05:04 I mean, it's a lot.

05:08 We're going to be taking some mighty big swings in season two.

05:11 We're very, very excited about it.

05:13 Anson, I understand that you grew up as big a fan

05:17 of the original series as I did.

05:19 I hear that you would pretend that you were Captain Kirk,

05:22 playing Star Trek as a kid.

05:24 I pretended that I was Mr. Spock.

05:25 I loved it.

05:26 Are you willing to share something

05:29 about those first few moments you sat in your chair

05:34 on the bridge of the USS Enterprise?

05:38 It was certainly different than pulling one of my parents'

05:41 lounge chairs up to the fireplace in our living room,

05:44 in which we thought the bridge--

05:47 I don't know, the fireplace bridge--

05:49 It's as good a view screen as any.

05:51 Yeah, I guess so.

05:52 When I wanted to do my camera tests,

05:54 our director said, would you like

05:55 to sit in the captain's chair for the first time?

05:57 I said, sure, and I jumped in.

05:59 And I was like, whoa.

06:01 I was hit by this wave of nostalgia.

06:04 Rebecca, throughout your career, you

06:07 have played characters in franchises

06:09 with just enormous global fan followings.

06:13 I'm curious to know how your experience as Una in Star Trek

06:18 is similar and different to your experiences

06:21 in some of the other incredibly iconic and well-known roles

06:24 you've played.

06:26 It is similar in that there's a hell of a lot of pressure

06:29 to get it right and not let down the fan

06:32 base of the various franchises.

06:34 So I will say it is different in that the Trek

06:39 family is so different.

06:42 I mean, it's-- and I feel like Trekkies get heard.

06:46 I think that things that come up, ideas or notes or comments,

06:51 things that come up from the fans, get implemented.

06:55 OK, last question, and this is a big one.

06:57 I would like both of you to imagine

07:00 that I am a person who just loves science fiction, right?

07:04 Like, I will not stop talking about Star

07:06 Wars and The Expanse.

07:08 And I love the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

07:10 I love Mass Effect.

07:12 I love Halo.

07:13 I'm crazy about all of this stuff.

07:15 But for some reason, I have just never watched Star Trek.

07:19 What is it that Star Trek offers that I'm missing?

07:22 And why Strange New Worlds is a really great entry point for me

07:27 as this imaginary brand new Star Trek fan?

07:30 It's a big question.

07:31 Take your time.

07:32 That's a very big question.

07:35 I mean, Strange New Worlds is the perfect starting point

07:38 for the Star Trek uninitiated.

07:40 You don't need to know much about the background.

07:43 Yeah, I would say that really the driving

07:45 energy of Star Trek is that instinct

07:47 that we have to walk beyond the campfire light

07:52 to see what's out there in the darkness beyond

07:55 and to do it for the sake of the tribe.

07:58 There's something that really human

08:00 that it taps into that I haven't seen anywhere else.

08:04 And with so much science fiction, which

08:06 can be so heavy and so dark and scary sometimes,

08:13 the Trek world is uplifting and operates

08:17 in a space of optimism and hopefulness.

08:20 And I think that's what separates us

08:22 a lot from a lot of other science fiction as well.

08:25 Well, I, hypothetical giant science fiction

08:28 fan who has never watched Star Trek,

08:30 am completely convinced.

08:31 Thank you.

08:52 it just amps up everything 1,000 times more.

09:09 We took some real big swings this season.

09:11 I hope they love it as much as we love doing it.

09:14 The crew is going to face a whole bunch of new journeys

09:16 this year.

09:17 And we're going to do something in season two

09:18 that's never been done in any Star Trek show before.

09:21 When they first pitched the idea and said,

09:23 it's a crossover episode with Lordex,

09:26 I was like, that's brilliant.

09:27 I'll never forget it.

09:28 It was an amazing episode to film.

09:29 We are delighted to be able to offer up

09:32 another set of varying tones, another set of varying story

09:36 structures, and deepening and evolving character stories.

09:41 I would like the ship to go.
