00:00 So Summer League went in, wasn't very riveted by this team, wasn't a lot of buzz around
00:11 it.
00:12 Like training camp just kind of came and went because it didn't seem like anything substantial
00:16 happened with this group, especially Jordan Walsh.
00:18 And that's who we obviously have to focus on here.
00:21 It looked like, you know, we talked about him on draft night.
00:24 I was watching him, you know, for a couple of weeks going into the draft as a fringe
00:28 guy, you know, a second rounder.
00:30 Another guy like JD Davison, who was big time coming out of high school, really struggled,
00:36 really had a projective in a different situation, playing a different style to think that he
00:41 was going to succeed quickly in the NBA.
00:43 And he was great, I thought.
00:46 And again, it's Summer League, the competition, all the rest.
00:49 You always put those, you always put those asterisks on it.
00:52 Great relative to expectations because he supposedly doesn't have anything on offense.
00:58 Kind of a mature offensive game.
00:59 But in the Summer League, he was getting his three pointer off.
01:02 The stroke looked pretty good.
01:04 He was able to get to the basket on a couple of occasions.
01:07 Defensively, though, man, he got caught flat footed several times.
01:10 He really he didn't look great on defense at all.
01:13 He was all over the place.
01:14 So the defense, you know, wasn't as advertised out there.
01:16 But weird system.
01:17 They didn't really have centers.
01:19 They were running a zone a lot, by the way, which I thought was interesting.
01:21 I don't know if we're going to see that during the year, but they played a ton of zone out
01:25 there, him at the top.
01:26 But he got disruptive at times against the Lakers at a five point lead late.
01:30 He deflected two balls once in the backcourt, once in the half court to maintain that.
01:34 Then he made a great cut to the basket to give them a seven point lead.
01:39 Forty percent from three.
01:41 I said in our videos, Sean, if he does that, and of course, it's not necessarily going
01:45 to translate.
01:46 But if he does that, he's playing this year.
01:48 The guy's shooting 40 percent from three.
01:50 If he hits 40 percent from three, Bobby, he's going to play.
01:55 No kidding.
01:56 But like what?
01:58 If he even hits the point, three shots a game.
02:00 Yeah, if he came out in the first two and took, I think, six a game, six, eight a game.
02:05 Look, I mean, summer league.
02:08 It's if he's not an abysmal shooter, he can find his way on the court because if he's
02:14 going to get minutes when the ball rotates over to him, he has to be able to do something
02:17 with it.
02:18 You can't be a zero on offense.
02:21 So for sure, if he can play, but that's provided he can play defense at the NBA level.
02:27 He looked not great on defense, so he's got to button that up first.
02:31 Somebody who can play NBA level defense just has to shoot OK to find his way on the court.
02:36 I mean, Semmy Ogilvy freaking played, you know, and he wasn't an outstanding defender
02:41 either.
02:42 I mean, he's about as bad as a player who could play significant minutes on a decent
02:45 team.
02:46 And he did.
02:47 So if Semmy is the bar, can Jordan Walsh get there?
02:50 Sure.
02:51 And if he does get there, that's actually a success for a second round pick.
02:54 If he's a little better than that, that's even better.
02:56 But like if you have a guy who can come in and actually defend wings and knock down a
03:00 couple of threes and he's an OK three and D guy.
03:03 Yeah, that's a massive home run with pick 38.
03:06 But I don't know.
03:07 You know, you think I'm not.
03:09 I'm not.
03:10 There's a path to minutes for him this year.
03:13 I do.
03:14 I think, you know, there's a need at that position this year where if he plays great,
03:18 I don't think he's going to be stashed in Maine all year.
03:20 I don't think he's J.D. Davis.
03:21 And, you know, the draft pick reflects that he won the 30s, not the 40s and 50s.
03:25 Here is a guy who probably should have been a first round pick given the year he had last
03:30 year.
03:31 He wasn't.
03:32 So listen, he's 19.
03:33 He needs to mature physically and within the NBA scheme.
03:37 So I'm not expecting to be a major part of this team this year.
03:40 But the reason they drafted him is because he shot really well in the workouts that translated
03:45 to summer league.
03:46 Now, let's see if it translates to preseason and the regular season, because that's the
03:49 name of the game, especially for this team.
03:51 If he can get threes up, be confident with it and hit them.
03:55 That's a great sign.
03:56 And so this is all I'm saying is that given what the expectations were coming into summer
04:00 league, I think he overall exceeded them well and look pretty confident out there doing
04:05 it.
04:07 I think he's going to find some playing time, but I'm not going to get super hyped up about
04:11 it, you know, second round pick guy to find a bunch of minutes that early on.
04:16 Let's put it this way, Bobby, if you're contending for an NBA championship and you're in your
04:20 second round pick is getting significant minutes, something's wrong.
04:24 Something's wrong with your roster construction.
04:26 So they it would be nice to be contribute end of the rotation and get his feet wet a
04:31 little bit.
04:32 I do think he'll have a bigger role than J.D. Davidson because I do think he can play.
04:38 I think it's really bad out there, by the way.
04:40 Yeah.
04:41 So Davidson's my next question.
04:42 It's a tough picture floating around about Davidson.
04:44 You guys saw that one.
04:47 Yeah.
04:48 That one slide.
04:49 Who was the first pick from the Nets trade?
04:55 Was it James Young?
04:56 Yes.
04:57 Oh, boy.
04:58 I can't I can't remember.
04:59 Everybody drink.
05:00 It was.
05:01 Yeah.
05:02 Because I remember the symbol I'm thinking of.
05:04 But there was one Celtics player who like basically like in their second or third year
05:09 in the league showed up to Summer League and like looked worse than they did before.
05:13 And that was basically it.
05:15 Whether it was Young or some it might be someone else I'm thinking of.
05:17 But Davidson like.
05:18 I can't imagine they played Summer League.
05:21 Davidson looked worse than he did last year.
05:24 And in Summer League that's bad.
05:25 You should be able to a year or two guys should really be dominating at this level.
05:30 They really should because they should just be able to get what they want a little bit
05:34 more frequently.
05:35 You've played the speed of the NBA game or at least you've been around it.
05:38 And it's different.
05:39 So it's not a shock to you.
05:41 Like Davidson looked brutal.
05:44 Like I wonder if like we never see him again.
05:47 I already don't think there was a lot of momentum for him.
05:51 I don't know.
05:52 Yom and Dar.
05:53 Yom's gone.
05:54 Yom and Josue are somewhere together right now.
05:58 I still like Juhan there in France.
06:02 But oh God.
06:03 I bet you do.
06:06 No Davidson.
06:08 Goodman never loved him which again I really put a lot of stock in my Goodman.
06:12 Never loves who?
06:13 Davidson.
06:14 Jalen Brown?
06:15 No J.D. Davidson.
06:16 Oh yeah.
06:17 So yeah I mean he just came out in the first game was throwing some wild turnovers around.
06:23 He had a 10-11 turnover game at one point down there and that was a little bit of an
06:26 issue for him up in Maine last year.
06:28 But I kept stressing this with people because people kept hyping him up if he was going
06:31 to have a role this year.
06:32 He didn't play a minute last year.
06:34 A minute.
06:35 A real minute for last year's team.
06:38 And they had some nights where guards were off.
06:39 Oh he played some scrub time.
06:41 Yeah but he never played a real minute for this team last year.
06:44 He didn't play Cornette minutes.
06:46 Cornette was out there.
06:47 Those were real minutes.
06:48 Cornette played real minutes.
06:49 Those were real minutes.
06:50 So I don't have great faith in his future here.
06:56 Especially with Banton in here.
06:57 Banton looked OK in this game.
06:58 What about Scrub?
06:59 Scrub looked awesome.
07:01 Scrub looked awesome.
07:02 And I said after a certain point.
07:03 Tough name.
07:04 Brad's never going to let another undrafted free agent go anymore.
07:10 He's just going to sign them all.
07:13 He's not going to have another Spruce.
07:16 He's been in the league for a couple of years now.
07:19 He's not a great two-way candidate.
07:20 In fact I think this was Scrub's last year that he could even be on a two-way.
07:24 I heard out in Vegas that he wasn't looking to be on a two-way.
07:27 So I don't think there's a ton of upside here.
07:29 But he came out and shot 50% from the field and 50% from three.
07:33 So if a guy does that, sign him up.
07:34 You have three two-way spots.
07:35 You're not really losing a ton by signing him up.
07:38 I like that.
07:39 Well Scrub did get drafted.
07:40 I thought he was an undrafted guy.
07:43 He was a late second guy.
07:44 He played with the Clippers.
07:45 Yeah, no, he was a late second.
07:47 I thought he was an undrafted guy.
07:48 Anyway.
07:49 What about Banton?
07:50 Banton didn't look amazing to me.
07:53 Again, turnovers.
07:54 He's huge.
07:55 So he rebounded well.
07:59 The shot's not great.
08:00 We knew that coming in.
08:01 I don't think he shot well from three out there.
08:03 So there's going to be some heat on Pritchard to do a little something here.
08:07 But I don't think Banton's the guy who's going to play Pritchard out of his role, it looks
08:10 like.
08:11 The chat loves Scrub.
08:12 I know.
08:13 Again, he came out and shot lights out down there.
08:17 So if a guy does that, great.
08:19 Sign him up.
08:20 But I don't think he's going to be a real impact on the team this year, especially at
08:23 that position.
08:24 So I'll say he might just be part of the dynamic and development up there in Maine.
08:28 And help in that sense.
